Riddle me this...
« on: April 29, 2008, 01:50:00 pm »

Simple enough, this is a riddle thread.  Beat the previous riddle and you get to post your own.  Seeing how the engraving game got out of hand, please do not post more than one riddle at a time, and please do not post another riddle until the first one has been solved or has had its answer released.

A young man spends it freely, a grown man guards it closely, an old man searches for more of it, and a dead man has none left of it.   What is it?

The first one is time.

The second one...  I don't know.

Mine:  A man is hanging from the ceiling by a rope.  There is no furniture in the room that could support his weight, and he is five feet off the ground.  There is a large puddle of water under him.  What happened?

Yeah, I see how time could be a better answer...

Next riddle, anything involving pools of water always has an answers that revolves around ice objects, so... he was standing on an ice ladder/chair/block 'till it melted?

My riddle stands  :)

I liked the version in BGII best- "If you name me, so shall you break me".  I even used it in a Nobilis character.

Not really a riddle. He stood on a block of ice and hung himself. The ice melted.

Fine.

A man goes into a restaurant, orders albatross, eats one bite, and kills himself.
Why?

Well obviously the albatross was just so horrible it made him want to kill himself... Either that or his spouse had been chopped into tiny pieces and was stuffed into it.... What?

I am a grain of sand escaping your hand,
When I am lost you know not I was there.
But I stay longer if you share.
I am an epitathe to days long gone, I am the ward of the wary.
I am the cage in which your perceptions are caught.
What am I?

You're very close, disturbingly close.  The man was lost on an island with his wife and another man.  His wife died and the other man cooked her and they ate her to stay alive, the man believing she was actually albatross.  After getting home he ordered albatross, liking the taste, and realized they tasted completely different.  He realized he had actually eaten his wife and killed himself.

Your riddle is either thoughts or ideas.

I don't think we should use riddles where the answer cannot be deducted from the question.

In riddle terms, thats like cheating at a card game.

As to Pnx's riddle...  I'm going to say memory.

Here's an old one:
I have a mouth but do not speak, have a bed but do not sleep, have a head but do not think.  What am I?

He started to eat when he suddenly thought of the Rime of the Ancient Mariner and went "oh shit!"  He chose suicide over a curse.

Besides, I'd imagine that albatross tastes about as bad as pelican, which is so gruesomely horrible that people who have tried it gag at the mere thought of it.  It simply can't be eaten, your body won't let you do it.
