The A-Team has been deployed.

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.

Yeah, but... the A-Team take fewer casualties than my dwarves do. In my imagination it's more of a cross between the Siege of Helm's Deep and something out of, say, Halo. Complete with Dwarf!Cortana making calmly insistent announcements over some sort of dwarven PA system as the Alarm Gong sounds, women and children scurry for cover, and grim-faced soldier dwarves prepare to give their lives for their home. "This is not a drill. This is NOT a drill. We are under attack. We are under attack. All noncombatants proceed to the Safety Zone immediately. Gold and Silver squadrons, deploy to defence zone alpha. This is not a drill. This is NOT a drill..."

To me, goblins always arrive too late so all my militia dwarves are well-equiped weapon masters.

Militia Commander: "You, you and you, kill the goblins with me. The rest of you, continue your parties."

This.
Every siege is just a competition to see who can get the most kills.

The only ways to get challenging sieges are modding or embarking next to a tower. With a 50 dwarf military trained up to mostly legendary and equipped in bronze and steel I was still experiencing about 5 or 6 deaths among dozens of casualties every time the undead came around. Goblins, on the other hand... Well, when they come around it's not so much a battle as it is a sprint to see who can get there and start scoring kills first.

"is it harmful for my dwarves ? I bet it is"
Always a safe default assumption in this game

Which is sad, because it used to be different. Goblins could get challenging fairly quickly in 0.34, much larger sieges than you ever see now. We thought climbing would make them scarier but realistic politics coupled with a lack of sources of information to hear about their other conquests...r.i.p. sieges, and warfare in general.

But at least silver bolts aren't as OP anymore.

I haven't had a siege yet in DF2014, but had some truly epic ones recently in .34.  60+ goblins and trolls versus two squads of elite marksdwarves firing silver bolts behind raised fortifications and weapon traps, with a single ballista firing away.  Looked like freaking Stalingrad.
