We really should ask them for a ride back.  Pretty sure they would oblige.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

Thinking of the road ahead, you turn and head back inside the police station. "Could I get a ride back? It's very late."

The officers look at each other, then the non-moustached one shrugs. "We ought to head back out anyways. Phil can watch the place." They lead you back out front to the patrol car, and you get in back. You might take the time to think or do things during the drive, and wonder what you're going to do when you get back.

We should worry about Emily, think about how to change her back into a human, try to remember who Miss Angeline is, and think if there is place Emily could hide other than our home.

Well, turning her back would be relatively simple, especially as now you have time to properly prepare spells. You could also do a proper transport spell and get her to somewhere she's unlikely to be looked for, since you don't really have anywhere other than your cabin to hide her.

Ms. Angeline... someone from town, you guess. You never got to know anyone there too well, as your interaction is generally limited to when you go there to pick up supplies.

The patrol car reaches the gravel road that branches off the highway towards your house and stops. You disembark, and the cops continue drive off to the North, presumably to rejoin the search. It's not too far to your cabin, but on reaching it you sense something wrong. It feels like your perimeter ward has been crossed while you were gone, and you see the door standing open.

Check around outside the house for anything untoward before going in.

Do you have your phone on you? If there's a trespasser on your property, the cops would be definitely nearby to respond to it, if you alerted them.

Can we use a spell to sense if something or someone is in the house?

That's what the perimeter ward is for. Whatever crossed it is no longer here.

Phone? You never really saw the point of having a phone. Seems like something people would use to bother you.

Check around outside the house for anything untoward before going in.
Walking around the perimeter, you see some paw prints in the damp ground, about cat sized, but it's hard to make them out.

Put two and two together.
It wasn't her that crossed the line. Something came in, then left.

Try to follow the paw prints.
They're hard to follow, the track being somewhat broken, but the furthest ones you can find are a couple feet from the perimeter ward, around the back of the cabin, and stop abruptly.
