i find building a pretty looking fort more interesting than mega projects and shit

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A pretty-looking fort is a mega-project, most times.

Mega-projects are simply things that take a long time to build, and are usually not practical.  It can be anything from a dwarfputer to a multi-tile "statue" to an above-ground castle to a fractal-designed fort layout to a recreation of a Lord of the Rings movie set.

If I didn't bring either 100 tons of coal, or 100 tons of birch logs each time I make a fortress, I would too.

I stopped doing that ever since the first multi-tile tree I chopped down gave me 40 logs.

Nowadays, I bring llamas.  You can shear enough wool from a single llama to be worth it for early textiles industry.  (Bags, and a couple ropes for wells.)

Bringing coal or extra logs can be a good idea though.  Lets you kickstart a metal industry or tide you over until you find magma.

Usually I do that with sheep, since they cost less.

I've never once embarked to an evil biome. (Never done good either, but that's less shameful.)

I do it with massive amounts of rabits, and dogs for war training.

I embarked on evil a few times......I died a lot.

One of the best starts of one of my early fortresses involved deconstructing a trade depot a few times. The sudden wealth did eventually bite me in the ass (ambush), but we pulled through, and doubled our efforts military-wise after our harsh lesson.

For what it's worth, the great dining hall was a worthy effort that looks pretty awesome, and put our wealth to use.
