I've been playing Dwarf Fortress off and on for many years, and I have something shameful to admit...


I've never went to war with Elves or Humans.

I've never seized elven caravans..

One of my Dwarves once wore a wooden mail shirt.

I've never purposefully caused the death of any of my Dwarves, even the most useless.

And most shamefully, I've never once mined candy or went to the circus. It's been found on several occasions but I was focused on iron and steel arms and armor for fear of the depths. Each time I felt remotely prepared for it, FPS death had already claimed my fortress.



 So, does anyone else have some shameful admissions to share?

I've never completed a pump stack. I always get impatient halfway through designation and 'discover' something else more pressing.

Artifact? Now that I think about what that might look like, carving a wooden chainmail shirt would be an impressive task.

Elven made, more likely. They make wooden armour and weapons. It's not very good. Actually, probably one of the worst materials to use.

I killed their diplomats but they refused to attack me.
I only offered them wooden items.
I bought full sets of wooden armors and weapons.

I've never had war with elves, either. How can one make elf attack the fort, after all? My longest fort lasted for at least 15 years, during which almost every elven caravan was attacked or robbed, but elves never sieged.

mass murder the trees of your region. that should piss them off.

Oh, I haven't thought about that. But tree regrows so slowly, that it is difficult to find enough trees to cut.

Big forest map should do the trick. But do you need to get the elf diplomat visit first?

I find there is nothing wrong with not warring with the elves as long as you have goblins. If you don't have goblins, then you are required by dwarven law to kill elves.

Just don't wear wood. It's degrading. Even bone is a better material, if only barely.

I... disable bogeymen in world-gen because I got sick of killing them with my first adventurer.

I never went to war with humans or elves either - why would I do that? Considering dwarven abilities in craftsmanship and construction, I regard them as highly civilized, not some kind of barbarians that attack their visitors who came to trade.

For the same reason I don't kill useless dwarves, like children. Also it's quite unrealistic to have a perfect dwarven society, without loafers and alike.

My own shameful admissions:
I've never breached the second caverns (except in test forts where I just dug straight down to check modded stuff).
By corollary, there's stuff in my own mod I've never reached under realistic conditions.
