2016: 1 year before the XCOM Project

Humans are no strangers to war. Whether for gold or god, mankind had always had a common foe - itself. But in the countless dark shapes that slowly surrounded the planet, intelligences completely unlike man lurked with sinister purpose. A glint of purple metal shone as a probe detached from one colossal shape - moving without rockets or any other earthly technology, the ship descended towards Earth.

The slaves inside - and creatures all the more cruel for being so - scuttled around instruments of scientific torture as the craft entered the atmosphere and sailed towards the unsuspecting world below.

=====

In the rather remote radar station Tango Charlie, a young lieutenant was calling for his CO.

"There, ma'am! Another one of those contacts!" the lieutenant pointed towards his screen excitedly. His captain leaned in next to him, gnawing on a knuckle in puzzlement.
"Can't be the Russians. We'd have picked it up long before now if it was them."
The captain frowned. They'd been picking up these ghost contacts for the past month in increasing numbers. Something had got the brass buzzing with concern. Nothing had been said, but it had filtered down. Simultaneously, the news had been buzzing about disappearances and cattle mutilations lately. Conspiracy theorists were shrieking aliens, but that was the realm of tinfoil hats.

"Ma'am, it's slowing down, losing height." the lieutenant said, breaking her out her reverie. Indeed, it was almost as if... with a beep, the craft dropped height and disappeared from the screen.
"Too low. to pick up. Did... did it crash, Ma'am?"

But she was already gone, lunging for a line to Command.

=====

The helicopter was too small and too noisy for the members of Taskforce Foxtrot Oscar X-ray to talk. Some international collaboration to "combat extraordinary threats", whatever that meant. The helicopter set down with a clang, the hatch opening - revealing an enemy unknown...

This is solymr's conversion of XCOM: Long war to a forum version -or rather, a test map thereof. Six players are required.
This is not XCEF: this is Sol's thing. I'm here to primarily help with flavour and the like.

Sheet details here.

Operation: Hammer Down completed: found here.

I will be running most things behind the scenes, such as calculations and enemy AI.

I also have to post the choices you can make in the matter of weapons and equipment.

For this test we require 6 soldiers. Keep in mind anyone can die (and probably will).

Player List:
1. Derek McWhirter, Private (lawastooshort)
2. Adriana Burnette, Private (Twinwolf)
3. Jane Parts, Private (scapheap)
4. Aywen "Crazy" Ayes, Private (a1s)
5. Andrea Stirling, Private (Xvareon)
6. Arthur Pierce, Private (Hawk123)

PTW and would like to join, if maybe someone could link to the rules or just copy the character creation rules here. (Or are we all starting like the example guy?)
Reserving spot, if that's allowed.

Of course, Twin is neither man nor woman but an unholy eldritch abomination like every other Bay12er. The difference is they hide it better.

Here are choices for progression, weapons and equipment, and formulas that might be of use so you don't die.

For new soldiers we require name, distribution of the 8 progression points, primary and secondary weapons and 2 pieces of equipment.

I would like to try?

Private Derek McWhirter reporting for duty, 4 points in HP, 4 in Will, Assault Carbine and Pistol, Medikit and Laser Sight. Wearing Tac Vest.

Would you like anything else for the moment?

Private Burnette, medic and support, reporting.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Anything need to be fixed? (I would have made a bio, but she's most likely a dead woman walking so...)

EDIT: And I'm supposed to be good at math.

You were planning to have a 15 year old magical girl kill Witches by drinking them under the table!? It's original, at least.
