Do zombie dwarves even recognizable? I mean, a ghost is still that person with a ghost status, but a zombie is just a copy of the dead person, if you kill a zombie, it will appaer in the dead unit list, along with it's dwarf version.

Urist McMason                 deceased
Urist McMason's corpse        deceased

Well in 34.11 I've had Dwarves bury "Urist McMason's corpse" in "Urist McMason's" tomb. So they recognize the corpses to some extent. One wonders if a Dwarf is attacked by their own severed limb if they would be traumatized additionally by being attacked by the undead and by being attacked by their own dead self.

Someone do some !!SCIENCE!! on this, please.

What if you turn him military? Will he attack the undead and get killed?
no, he doesn't see the undead as hostile, although you can order him to attack them, only the undead he attacks will attack him, so you can pick them off one by one

Wait, what do you mean by salvaging?

This is already a perfect situation for a hermit game!

By that I mean murdering all the undead so that the new migrations waves will be able to get in. The mayor refuses to work when not off slaughtering the dead.
Maybe revoking mayor title from him will work
Why not feed the migrants to your zombie pets?

Mostly because the mayor won't do anything unless given a military order. I gave him all kinds of labors removed them and tried everything in between and he refuses to work.  As fun as hermitting might be it's going to get boring if I can't work on any one dwarf mega projects.

I don't know how fast the training goes without sparring.

If he can pickup equipments, and you can find a zombie-free cavern area, assign him a pick and an axe, station him there, that way he should be able to carry the two important tools with him. Then you can wall off the area, build a shelter and start his training.

Oh no need, he's a vampire who's been fighting things for centuries and is a grand master with armor, shields, and his flails which I gave him two of. I've been having him slowly pick off the undead for while and combined with goblins who come and get slaughtered we got it down from about 500 to 300 but then another necromancer showed up and undid all my progress. Like I said he won't work so I can't just build a bridge and obliterate all the corpses so I'm running out of ideas.

On the up side the undead all marched upstairs and out into the open air and sunlight and the fortress is basically empty so at least now he can relax when I don't have him slaughtering the dead.

Oh, I thought he was interrupted. It seems he's on break forever because he can't drink blood?

I had considered that but he isn't on break, it's listed as no job and he drank right before the zombie apocalypse showed up with a snack platter.
