I'm not sure if anybody here heard about this thing called Choicescript yet.

To sum it up really quickly, it's a simple scripting language that can make a choose-your-own-adventure-style game really quickly. It does feature a few gimmicks:

Values/Variables - Allows your CYOA game to have different results depending if whether you have enough of a value or achieved a variable which could have been missed at an earlier point in your story.

Picture/Art support - Displaying your art asset on a certain page. (often not used by any developers)

It's somewhat convoluted, but it's actually really simple if you know basic programming logic. Disadvantages though: it lacks a save/bookmark feature. Been dabbling in this for a bit, to no artistic avail.

I think Bay12 could contribute some free novels because you guys are artistic and all.

Need an example?

Interesting. That certainly seem have a lot of potential. I'm busy with a lot of projects these days but I might try my hand at it later. I'll stay around to see what others make with this in the meantime.

Edit: Do you think it would be possible to make a webcomic using choisescript? If so I might try it sooner.

You know what might be fun?  A 7-Day Choicescript contest.  :)

I think it might be possible to make a webcomic with Choicescript, but that's something no one's attempted yet. And I'm not really sure how updating novels work, at least for those that aren't going to label themselves as Choice of X, to be sold for the masses or something.

7-Day Choicescript sounds fun. The Writer's Apprenticeship should take a gander :D

I'm actually working on a long form Choicescript game. It's what I'm doing full-time nowadays. I'll let everyone know when it's done (in some months).

If anyone needs any help with getting it set up or scripting, just ask.

Can we have more details? I'm definitively curious now.

Choice of Games pay a reasonable advance. I'm writing a game set amongst the criminal underworld of early 18th century London.

Is their script available to people who don't want to publish under them, but would rather freely distribute their own work?

This is what their license has to say on the matter:

Quote
Non-commercial usage and modification of the works is permitted provided that (1) the ChoiceScript license is retained with the works, so that any entity that uses the works is notified of this license, and (2) the user grants at no charge an unrestricted, transferrable, non-exclusive license to Dan Fabulich and Adam Morse for any modifications, if any, made to the ChoiceScript interpreter.  The user may not use the ChoiceScript interpreter or code written for use with the ChoiceScript interpreter for any commercial purposes, including sales of complete applications, use of the code to generate advertising revenue, or any other commercial purpose.  If you are interested in a commercial license, please contact support@choiceofgames.com.

So it sounds like you're free to do whatever you want with it as long as you keep it free.

I am also intrigued by their paid advances. Maybe I'll try writing one of these over the summer and see if I'm any good at it. I've never done any game writing before...

It's easy to get going on a low-spec system as well, given you just need a decent notepad program and a web browser.
