Do dwarves have a limit on children?
« on: April 12, 2015, 06:31:29 pm »

Finally in my fortress of 13 dwarves we have had a marriage
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and now we've had our first baby.  I'm wondering if there is some sort of limit on how many kids a dwarf can have, I'm hoping for at least 7 to bump our population up to 20 so we can have a mayor.  But even if we can't have 7 I'd be satisfied with just a few to add some diversity to our fortress once they grow up in 12 years xD

Not as far as I know, no.  And mayor requires 50, just so you know.

Oh I guess I had my numbers wrong xD  37 children then!

Ah I guess its Baron, Count and Duke that needed 20.

That's probably one of the new changes, yeah.  Baron used to require 80 in DF2012, and before a couple days ago I would have said that was still true, but recently a fort of 20 or so of mine had a baron appointed.

Yeah I was a tad shocked when I read that on the wiki because I swore it was 80.

I thought baron was just certain import/export requirements more than a population one.  Its just that the liason has to recognize it and thus you can't get it on the first year, and wind up hitting it on the 2nd or third caravan (after you've gotten several migrant waves).  Most people know not to push wealth early, afterall.

There is an init setting that controls the percentage/hard number of children your fort can have (immigration ignores this, but immigrants do count towards the limit). It's set to pretty high initially, though.

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

A fort of mine had a king with a population of 16
if I remember corectlly
it was a low ass number to get a king.

You do get a king if you strike candy, maybe that's what happened?  Otherwise I don't know what the requirement is in wealth/population, I'd be curious to know.

As far as the poster's question goes, what dictates how *often* a dwarf can have children?  How is it calculated when married dwarves get pregnant?

Last I knew there was a maximum limit at either 10 or 12 children per couple (after which they wouldn't have any more children even if they could). For pregnancy it used to work where dwarves often became pregnant right after they popped out the previous baby, but since the removal of spores I'm not quite sure how it works anymore.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

If your civ is dead or dying, one of your dwarves will claim the throne.

One of my couples just had their 17th. There's a new one every year.
