Did you read my post entirely? : then doing a 1 week sweep on bugs that can be fixed and that does not affect the upcoming update

Toady doesn't use version control, so that would be an exercise in awkward file fumbling.

I kinda wish we'd get more optimization (I can't really play any more and haven't been able to for some time. Even on small maps with plenty of .init messing... I just want old forts with lots of history :( ), but I can completely understand why Toady just focuses on the things he wants to.

As a general rule for programming, you don't optimize until you're done, and if you aren't skilled you don't optimize at all. In a system so complex (and especially in a system of dorf tier complexity) it's incredibly easy to break things just by making some things go a teeny bit faster.

I'd love some optimization, but it's unrealistic to expect it before the game is reasonably complete (unless you're just correcting bugs that slow things down).

Toady has new features as higher priority than fxing bugs. Results are very well known, even if some players are in denial about amount of bugs in DF.

I'm sure most experienced players are well aware of the sheer number of bugs DF has,  It's just that not all players see it as that big of an issue.

Yes, DF2014 has lots of bugs , some rather important , but it's a matter of if those remaining bugs are detrimental to what you enjoy in Dwarf Fortress or not.

To me some of those 40.24 remaining bugs are simply game breaking enough to my fun in playing DF so i just went back to 34.11 that while has bugs on its own, does not have bugs breaking my enjoyment of the game.

So indeed to each his own when it comes to playing DF and how much the bugs affect your fun.

I will agree that many major aspects of the game are severely broken currently, and probably should have been fixed before Toady started his next major feature releases (hell, the entire faction/relationship system just plain doesn't work now).

On the other hand, I can only respect Toady for his work, even if I don't always agree with the directions he takes.

With the scope of Dwarf Fortress, it was inevitable ( :D ) that bugs would hit increasingly with the program content and features continuously expended, especially considering coding DF is a one man show (always surprise me how much bigger DF is in comparison to other games with large coder teams) and bug fixing is obviously the less interesting and most obnoxious part of game creation, it's difficult to blame Toady for wanting to code something new instead of spending another year of bug fixing.

I just hope that all the future content will not add another layer of bugs on top of the existing bugs though, as i imagine this will become increasingly hellish to maintain and develop for Toady.

I also dont get how the community can really talk about bugs in the first place. We can should and do repeat things which aren't working correctly.

But we're the least informed as to why the game is behaving hows it behaving. Like the community for a long while, was asking for cows to be milkable so that the cheese maker wouldnt be so flippant pointless. Basically just asking ToadyOne and ThreeToes to spend time inventing a and implementing a place holder system, that will have to be tore out.

And we did get milkable cows, it was under a new sub system, that handle all forms of entities excretion, from poison, to fireballs to even milk.

Yea, there lots of things working fuzzily, or not at all. But we're nearly (and I'd argue most of the the entirely) incapable of knowing why its happening and how to fix it. There are an unknowable amount of bugs, that simply exists because its place holder systems interacting with each other. And the only way to do those is to implement none place holder version what is happening.

Nother thing I get, is when you get folks that talk about ToadyOne needing to do optimization. He does them all the freaken time. As the game has grown more dense, its remained on a lot of systems, about as resource intensive as it always have. You can't just add in 400 z levels, have it run about the same as a tenth of that, without optimization.

A lot of the time, it always feel requests like these are, 'Fix this pet bug of mine, because reasons'. Its just for me, never really escapes being entirely whiny.

(bunch of links)
but clearly, these did not happen,
Protip: I did not said that Toady does not fix bugs. I said something else. I claim that Toady (and majority of this community) consider adding features more important than fixing bugs. Do you agree or not?

and the majority of releases are feature releases
I guess two facts that:
- Feature releases, while rare, are very big and takes many months if not years. They also introduce tons of new bugs.
- Bugfix releases, while numerous, take only small fraction of size and time. They are just short bursts after feature releases and thats it.
does not matter for you. Quantity in itself do not make any argument whatsoever.

As I said, some players are simply in denial. *shrug*

It's not important that one do not know the exact origin of a bug, none else than Toady has the source code anyways, but what you can do is report the bugs that you find and include a save for ease of reproducing it :
http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/my_view_page.php

After that it's all up to Toady to take time to try to fix or not, but in the end that's all you can do.
Though some genius ike Quietust and the DFHack team still manage to fix some unresolved bugs on their own (they fixed the temperature bugs a few years before Toady did by example).

I haven't seen this no-attack bug since 40.24.

Err isn't 40.24 the latest version?
