Military fixes before entertainment stuff?
« on: April 11, 2015, 07:44:13 pm »

Any chance we can get a fixing sweep on combat bugs that isnt attached to all the barding and tavern stuff? I'm looking forward to the new stuff and I'd be happy to test it but it would be best if we can have a separate solid version of the game as well. Thanks.

What military/combat bugs are you running into the most?

I think that toady should focus a bit more on fixing the current bugs, for example (forgive me if I list one that's been fixed):
Hospital stockpiles
Properly differentiating ammo when ranged is set to individual choice.

The last long dev arc took two years. Do you really want toady to spend the next (insert high number here) years fixing things instead of fleshing out the game more? there is possibly decades worth of material to add.

When ordered to kill something my dwarves will not attack. They will stand there dodging till they pass out or get killed. I ordered 8 dwarves to kill a giant chetah and they all became exhausted standing next to it instead.

It would be nice if he could spend four months adding features and four months doing bug fixes, then alternate between those two cycles. In all honesty though I can live with the bugs and without the new features what this game needs is a hard look at optimization 20-30 FPS with all the processing power my computer has is absurd.

Uhm, yeah, if you don't like the military and hospital now, stay away from df 2012... The fix cycle between october and january fixed so rediculously much in terms of hospital and military.

I kinda wish we'd get more optimization (I can't really play any more and haven't been able to for some time. Even on small maps with plenty of .init messing... I just want old forts with lots of history :( ), but I can completely understand why Toady just focuses on the things he wants to.

You should upload a save where this happens as it's marked as fixed on the bug tracker. (Although Toady says he's fixed a "large part" of what caused it, so I suppose it's not fully fixed). My military seem to have no problem with kill orders in .24.

The hospital stockpiling bug was fixed, though.  At least I've never seen it come up in any recent game I've played where I had a hospital.

are you using burrows on your military dwarves?  I thought that bug was caused by dwarves not deciding to attack any creature that wasnt in their burrow

Nope no borrows. The example I was using was at embark where I needed to militarize my starting dwarves to evict a crocodile and giant cheetah from the immediate area. In both cases the combats took way longer than they should and led to the animal and my dwarves becoming exhausted. The creatures didnt die till I revoke the order and the animal attacked a dwarf. In that case the dwarf attacked normally and eventually killed the animal though he got mauled in the process since he had no combat skills. Thankfully I was able to build a hospital at my entrance and ultimately save the dwarf via doctoring which worked fine other than some thread blinking in and out of existence.
