Log of the Mountainhome Lettergears.
Recorded by master of Avuz Ilush, the Mine of Carnage, a fellowship in service to Atir Keshan, The Dye of Flame
April 9th: We have arrived. After a journey from the Mountainhomes into the forbidding wilderness beyond, our harsh trek down the freeway has finally ended. Our party of seven is to make an outpost for the glory of all of Atir Keshan.
There are almost no supplies left except for tons of construction material and seventy thousand dollars, but with stout labor comes sustenance. We expect a supply caravan just before winter entombs us, but it is Spring now. Enough time to delve, I mean construct above ground, secure lodgings, ere the dingoes get hungry. A new chapter of Dwarven history begins here at this place, Lolorolon, "Lettergears." Strike the Earth!
April 10th: There has been harsh disagreement. On one side, it is universally agreed that we are not elves, and furthermore any industry must rely ultimately on burning coal. HOWEVER! we cannot ignore the fact that the only way to produce torque is through wind power. After long discussion, we decided to accept the possibility that burning coal may produce useful energy, and have settled on that as our primary power source. To ensure that it is easy to route power throughout the town, we are establishing the power plant right at the central crossroads.
April 11th: We've set up a series of tunnels and pipes for transporting water. It will have to do until we have a still and farms set up.
April 12th: We've been building smooth stone roads all over the place. It's getting expensive. Well, I've put a stop to this, we need to save some money somewhere. Dirt roads for everyone!
April 20th: People are finally moving in. This plastic thing keeps whistling or chiming at me and I'm told that the people in the fortress are upset. Also, the knights templar are out of hiding, sounds like we may be facing a siege soon.
May 2ed: Someone put the craftdwarfshops way on the edge of town. This won't do. I provided living space right next to them to ensure plenty of access to home, and quick walks.
May 28th: We have 440 residents and are now considered a hamlet. They also mentioned something about schools and hospitals, but I'm mainly busy building a refuse stockpile. Hmm... no way to build an airlock to control the miasma, I think I may need to extend the road a little bit
June 11th: I ordered an office built for the Chief Medical Dwarf.
June 21st: There were complaints about the water supply. I demolished their houses, then built an expansion to the ruined properties.
June 26th: The coffers are finally beginning to fill! Until today, we'd been operating at a debt. The accountant left his room for the first time today to celebrate.
July 5th: We are now a worthy village, with 850 residents. The migrants never cease!
July 17th: Some may call my city uninspired. Perhaps. I find a regular grid a kind of efficient beauty. But at least it isn't a fortress built around a single vertical staircase as though it were an anthill.
August 8th: We are now a "Tiny Town". Someone, somewhere, is going to get a war axe to the knees.
August 9th: FINE! FINE! I've been pestered enough! These people insist on having an office of people dedicated to extinguishing fires! I'm not sure I understand the concept entirely, but they won't silence themselves about it so I have no choice.
August 12th: I have just been informed that we are in the centre of a rich belt of timber. WHY HAVE I JUST NOW BEEN INFORMED?!?!
I'm having axes sharpened as we speak.
August 13th: It appears that we have an Elf among us. A citizen named Terry Greenaway questions my decision to focus the entirety of our industry to deforestation.
August 21st: I have demolished Terry Greenaway's house.
November 17th: Due to complaints about crimes, I have built a Hammerer's office. I still think a wall of guard dogs would do more to prevent skulking thieves, but my hands are tied.
November 22ed: These minecart tracks seem quite useful, but it seems we aren't large enough yet to use them.
November 27th: I have ordered more homes built, and some of the older homes near the coal plant converted into trade depots.
December 18th: We ran out of power for the sewage pumps for a few days. It shouldn't be too much of a problem, I suppose.
December 23rd: I've ordered a new power plant built near the refuse stockpile to improve the torque to the sewage pumps.
December 24th:We are now a Boom Town, and can legalize Recreational Use of pipeweed. Sounds fine to me. We can also legalize something called Recycling, which appears to be highly Elven. This concept, I feel, requires some scrutiny. Oh, and we get tombs now, too. I suppose I should set to that. AND WHY DOES EVERYONE KEEP ASKING ME ABOUT PRESENTS?!
January 1st: I am proud to unveil this glorious statue to labor and avarice, a monument to industry It menaces with spikes of cogs.
January 5th: I've built a large area dedicated to forestry uphill from the city. The region also promises vast mineral wealth. I hope to see much more timbercutting there soon.
January 17th: There is a facility designed to train children in, I have been told, combat and dodging; a "danger room," it is called. Spikes jolt out of the walls at intervals, and all in all the facility is quite exciting. I've established one in our town to ensure that the young are properly prepared to die gloriously for the fortress. For some reason, when my advisors aren't speaking directly to me, they refer to it as an elementary school. Perhaps it teaches the elements of combat.
April 9th: We're already one year into my reign. Much more work to go.
May 2ed: I've seen a new danger room constructed. I suggested that we add hundreds of dogs to each one to add to the realism of the training.
September 10th: We are now a "busy town," which I suppose is accurate. It is a well-timed announcement; I have established a forge district right next to the minecart tracks for future development.
September 15th: We've built our third coal furnace. I mean power plant. I've placed this in the forge district.
October 1st: I've ordered a statuary garden built to please some of the nobles.
October 4th: Taylor Clarke complained about deforestation again. I raised his house and had a single tree planted on the ruins. Let's see what he thinks of trees now.
December 21st: Once again, it seems the Elves have invaded during the night. It seems to happen every year around this time. I've barricaded myself in my office and set stonefall traps in case any of them come sieging.
January 10th: We've tripped our refuse stockpile capacity, but I'm afraid we're still overrun with cats. I think we will simply have to ban pets.
Febuary 1st: These migrants never cease! I am forced to build new quarters for them. Fortunately, there is no difficulty in setting them to work; in fact, the new settlers will receive fine quarters immediately adjacent to the forges.
April 8th: As I was packing up my things, one of the advisers told me that we'd just become a "big town," granting us access to, among other things, the ability to burn our garbage. I am overwhelmed.
April 9th: Well, I have done everything I can for these strange humans, but it is time for me to step down. Maybe I can finally get back to work on my stonecrafting. I have an idea for a diorite glove... Hmm... I'm going to need some cloth, yes...
The next story need not be written by a very confused dwarf.
