Interview: Helen

Raker nodded. "I believe that people can always change, but I also believe there's a certain point when you have to cut your losses. I believe in second chances, but maybe not thirds, and certainly not fourths." Blackjack swung his lame leg out of the chair and stood up, extending a hand to help the doctor out of her seat. "I'm curious about the events that brought you to this ship, but we're done as far as this interview is concerned. You can bring your things to the ship when you're ready, and you can claim any crew room that doesn't already have a nameplate. I'll have your official contract prepared by the time you've gotten settled in."

Interview: Peter

"As soon as you're ready. We've got a couple rooms that nobody has taken yet, and you're free to take whichever one strikes your fancy.  We'll have chow at thirteen-thirty, ship time, and it'd be a good chance to meet the rest of the crew and finish your official contract."

Interview: Chainsaw

Blackjack nodded, grimacing. "That's always been the difference between us. I don't regret the things I did. Hell, I might be a lot better off in some ways, but I'd be living with regret every day if I hadn't struck that entitled bastard down. I regret little things, Sawyer, but I wouldn't ever want to do the big things differently." Raker let that hang for a long minute, considering Sawyer. There was a good man in there, but Sawyer had gotten where he was from a love of glory. A soldier who lusted for glory... A story for heroes and villains both. "Don't ever make me have to amend the statement, Blackjack said, extending his hand. "If you can commit, it'll be damn good to have a familiar face on the crew."

Interview: Jackson

Blackjack nodded, his smile genuine. "You're an honest man, a trait I hold in high regard. You're not a selfish man, otherwise you would have made excuses for your actions, and that's another trait I hold high. I understand doing what you have to do, but I'd like to make one thing clear: If you have a grievance when you work for me, you bring it myself or the first officer. You do not fix said grievance on your own. If something makes it so you need an advance on your pay, you ask for the advance- you don't sell parts or cargo under the table to make up the difference." A smile still lingered on Blackjack's face, but there was no doubt that every word he said was serious. "I will toss you naked out an airlock if you steal from me. If you're very lucky, we'll be docked somewhere with air when I do it. That said, welcome aboard," Blackjack added, standing and extending his hand to Cromwell.

Interview: Amaani

Blackjack drummed his fingers on the desk, the sound muffled by the layers of paperwork. He was tired, frustrated, and mildly disappointed, but the card player in him kept his face carefully neutral. "I see. Loyalty is something that's difficult to promise, but I appreciate the gesture." Raker kept his eyes focused tightly on Amaani, looking something he was beginning to doubt existed. "I'm more interested in why you think you wouldn't be a good pilot."

Chainsaw grips Blackjack's hand firmly and shakes it. Never before in his life was he this happy to be given another chance.

Thank you, Captain.

A little advice, Wipeout. The last thing you want to do in a job interview is tell your employer you're unqualified for the position you applied for. :P

Cromwell reached out his own hand to accept the gesture, and stood as well. "I understand completely, sir. I won't let you down."

Raker shook his head, but he couldn't stop himself from grinning. "Don't you dare start calling me captain all the time. I'm still just Blackjack, and I don't particularly feel the need to use formalities when I'm running a tight crew." Blackjack's already broad smile deepened as an idea began to form. "Speaking of informal, I recall that you spent most of your free time on mars bragging about how well you could cook if you had more than a prison kitchen to work with. You're going to have a decent audience to impress, and I know you might be a little rusty, but how'd you feel about doing a little cooking in-between bashing skulls in? A few hot meals before we launch would give the crew a chance to know each other, break the ice a little."

"Cooking? Now this is going in my favor," he said. "I'll get a few meals done before launch. When is launch by the way?"

"That depends. Need to finish locking in a buyer and getting the cargo loaded, need to get the rest of the crew hired, need to get the maintenance papers on Wilhelmina's reactor updated so she won't get scrubbed for docking clearance, and a dozen other things." Blackjack shrugged. "We've already got an engines man working on the reactor clearance, and tomorrow I've got interviews with a promising EVA specialist and an honest-to-god doctor. Give it a week before we launch, two at the most.  Get yourself checked in to a room, get a feel for the ship, check to make sure nobody sneaks onto our maiden voyage, and try not to get too drunk while you're waiting. I'll have a crew contract for you sign this evening."

"No problem, Blackjack. Still having a hangover anyway."

The party creation phase is an abstract period that represents months or so of preparation, so this (your interview) is happening on some random day over that period. You're not being interviewed on the ship, this is happening in a room in his house, apartment or business that serves as his office. Much like a naval ship—which while it could serve as a temporary home when at port—you would normally only ever board immediately before it set off. That said, space is not an ocean and getting on and off a starship costs a lot of money because that requires being shuttled into space, so preferably you're only going to do that once (when the ship is going to embark).

Amaani thought hard, and then gave a response. "Well, as you know already, and as I think you've said before, I'm a known criminal, and my astrogating "experience" was mostly limited to just that. I feel that because of this, I'm probably not the most credible pilot you could have. However, the other reason I applied for the piloting job on the Wilhelmina, is because I want to do something. I don't just want to be that "girl who once went to jail", I wanto be more than that. I want to help, basically."

Blackjack sighed and leaned back, relaxing his facade enough to rub his temples. "Sorry, kid, but I've got no room for error on this crew. Your criminal history doesn't turn me off, it makes me like you a little more if anything, but..." Blackjack shook his head a little sadly. "Your inexperience, and the way you think about your inexperience, that makes so that I don't know if I could gamble on you- even if your record was as clean as the driven snow. I know a man, a former chaplain and bit of a technophobe, who is looking for a navigator that can replace the computer on his ship for most of the non-precision maneuvers. I can put in a good word with him,  and I think you'd be a decent fit for his ship, but I don't think you're the pilot I need."

Well, Amaani knew it now, she had probably screwed this interview up royally. "Well, thank you for taking the time to interview me, and maybe someday, I hope we'll meet again." With that, she decided to get off her seat and head for the door.
