If there aren't any rolls or anything, since this is freeform roleplay, what if the roboticist wanted to create some sort of utility droid in addition to the bots we have on our ship? How would the quality or even success be determined?

The OP says that the Sol System is the only one with multiple major colonies. So, does the Wilhelmina have to jump systems (probably not, since that'll last more than a year, and that's our contract length) or are there plenty of minor colonies scattered around the other systems (and what size would they be?)
He has the knowledge, as long as he has the time and the parts he can build it.

That is correct. Earth, Mars and the Moon in Sol. Every other colony is at least a million people and rising. The largest one has over 10 million people living on it. There are all kinds of space stations and outposts lying around each system with thousands of inhabitants. The colonies are still growing and there's a lot of demand for bulk transport to move materials and food around. Trade between systems is pretty much restricted to information. There's not a lot of stuff that's so rare that shipping it from outsystem would ever be worth it.

I was interpreting that Sol is the only system with colonies with populations over 100,000 people. So the Wilhelmina would be bringing supplies to research stations, military outposts and the like. (And bringing any valuable trade goods back to the major colony)
Correct.

@GUNIN: Sending my sheet over PM -- IRC; Had it drafted while offline in between the days. Moving in as doctor with a penchant in diplomacy. Will also submit alternative captain sheet if possible. Please post sheet for me here as-is. :/
Will request Giglamesh Despair//mastahcheese as witness so there's no something something suspicion behind the lines.

Experiencing technical difficulties at present.

I'm hoping we get a few more captain sheets before we have to start. Is anyone still working on their sheet?

You never did send it to me. Still waiting on that.

Yes. I am. Got to do some backstory things, and maybe a bit of personality.

Makes sense.

I'm mostly still waiting on Tiruin's sheet, which seems to be the only other Captain submission other than Draig and Adwarf's.

Any word from the potential captain?

I really should work on characters who aren't total rejects.
Anyone have a compatible backstory to weave a scientist into? I need a little bit of base.

I was really excited to see what Tiruin had but I think we've waited long enough. I pick Draignean as the captain. He can go ahead and put his crew together now.

Oorah!

Alright, so, this is the link to Captain Raker's character sheet. Some of you already have done so, but feel free to PM me if you're thinking over a bit of backstory integration or character role but don't want to clutter the thread with planning drafts.

If GUNIN has no objections, I'd like to give the people that I'm most interested in an IC interview for their position. Essentially skipping back in time to the day they were either hired on or passed over. The interview lets us both get a feel for the characters, and it establishes a bit of groundwork for the crew dynamic.

As Captain, these are the roles I'm looking for.

Engine Officer (Mandatory)
Robotics Specialist (Mandatory)
EVA Specialist (Mandatory)
Medic (Optional)
Shuttle Pilot (Optional)
Business man/woman (Optional)   [I.E, someone who has an eye for the market]
Security Officer (Optional)
Programming Specialist (Optional)
Astrogator (Optional)
And probably half a dozen things that I'm forgetting.

Blackjack himself is a negotiator, a man who knows his way around a card table and can bluff and call with the best of them. He's the captain, and he likes to meet with people face-to-face. This isn't to say that there isn't room for another talker/negotiator on the crew, but they should probably have a secondary purpose. Feel free to combine things from the above list all willy nilly. I'd enjoy an interesting crew over an efficient one any day of the week. I will also pick one member of the crew as first officer, the only other real 'rank' on the ship.

Final point, Blackjack is a man who values second chances and misfits. He may take a less qualified candidate over a professional if he knows that the professional can get a job on another crew- and it's the last chance for the other guy.

Just for the record, I don't really mind if you don't pick me for Engine Officer. I suppose I could always be available if at any time you need a replacement one.

EDIT: I've just been through everyone else's character sheets. Looks like I'm the only Engine Officer.
