I like the music a lot, so I have it playing most of the time. If I'm using soundsense I'll turn it off, and occasionally I'll be watching youtube/netflix on my other monitor so I have the game muted then.

I do.

I usually have something from John Fahey playing in the background instead.

I added it to my playlist. It's not that I turned it off, I just gave it buddies.

I never turn it off.  It's part of the experience for me.  I love it.

I love the music, but after thousands of hours, it's nice to listen to my own music.

I turn off the DF music and play Soundsense music instead.

Not sure if dying of old age is an honor or a shame for weaponmasters. On the one hand, it means they never got the opportunity to die in glorious battle. On the other hand, it means nothing could beat them in glorious battle.

I turn it off and listen to this instead.
Pretty sure you can change the music the game uses to this. Go to the Dwarf Fortress/data/sound file, take out the .ogg file "song_game", put in the orchestral theme .ogg file, and rename it "song_game". You could use any .ogg file for this.

I'm 95% certain this is possible, and I'm pretty sure I've tried it in the past. I'd try it again to check if I'm right before posting this but I'm not able to do so at the moment.

On topic, I usually switch music off and use soundsense for background noise (sparring, combat, etc) and use youtube music mixes for actual background music. hearing the in game music again is nostalgic though.

I read a theory that the game music may be some kind of ethereal god music. Because of "its ability to get stuck in your head combined with the listener's inability to actually remember how it goes".

Sure, the chords are simple. Remembering the fingerpicking melody seems less simple.

Yep. That's how I know I'm in this world. It puts me on edge and reminds me that whatever it was that I have forgotten will cause the doom of my civilization.

I turn it off and either listen to a news channel on the radio or listen to Youtube.
