The Lock and the Key [4/4] (Waitlist is Avaliable)
« on: April 05, 2015, 04:14:18 pm »

This barn is that remains of your family. This winter has not been kind.
No winter in Tejekov is kind.
The wind whistles through gaps. The children sleep in the loft in furs. The elders crowd around the fire and the young get what little heat they can.
One of the elders cries, "The fire is dying!"
One of the elders says "That is what fires do."
One of the elders says "Such fatalism. What are we to do?"
One of the elders speaks practically.
"We send someone out to the shed.
The fire is almost out, so we need some wood for it.
We need more stew, so get ingredients and water.
And when did we last have vodka?
Yes, they should be gathered from the shed."
An elder says "I will not do it. The wind howls like wolves, when it rains it is an ocean, and what little time it does not rain it is a flurry of snow."
They turn outward. It will be the young's duty to provide.
Uncle Andrei stands up. "I shall volunteer.
I am fast on my feet, even in my old age."
"No," says an elder. "You are flighty, Andrei."
Cousin Vola stands up. "I am volunteering.
I am sharp with a rifle, so no wolves will attack while we gather wood."
"You are of slow wit, Vola," says an elder. "You will not do."
You look outside. The elders were right: the night is fierce. But even in a dying family, prestige is paramount.
"I shall go!" you call out.
"Who is that?" an elder yells, peeking their head out. "I cannot see you, so far from the fire!
Explain yourself."

Ooh, color me interested. I'll have a sheet up once I've had time to mull it over.

What sort of linguistic family would the language of Tejekov fall under? Also, collective agreement on the surname, I'm guessing? Unless this is a really large extended family.

--

Name: Pavel ??

Skill: Blooded. During the Russian Civil War, a band of White Army deserters roaming across borders attacked a farmstead several miles away. Pavel saw the raid from the forest, where he had been cutting firewood; unfortunately, he was seen in turn. Several of the soldiers followed him as he fled, though only one managed to graze him with their rifle. Pavel managed to avoid them long enough for night to fall and ambushed the two who had kept after him, killing them both with his hatchet. He fled and never spoke a word about it.

Relation: Brother.

The language of Tejekov is a mongrel tongue that is very inbred. It's generally Slavic but has major influences from Germany to Lithuania. When in need of a name, slap two syllables together and say its a local name.
The family you were part of was quite big back in the day, so big that even people outside it still call it by 'The Family'. That said, if you guys agree on a catchy name I'll include it.

Alright. I'll hold off, then, see if anything interesting comes up. And, as above, is the 'relation' just someone in the family our characters are very close to?

It's how you're related to the family.

Mm, that's going to be sort of awkward to frame, unless you're okay with us just making up a bunch of other names to describe how our characters fit into the family tree.

It's optional, don't worry too much about it if you don't want to frame it. Making up names is also fine.

It occurs to me that the premise of this game might be flawed. To my knowledge, people with money, land or unfortunate connections didn't usually get to stay in the country during Soviet occupation, and were instead deported to Siberia (repossession of their lands to start up collective farms goes much more smoothly that way and you don't have any disenfranchised louts who don't do any good to the regime mixing with the more desirable, ideologically less compromised populace).

Then again, Wikipedia tells me forced collectivization started in 1928, so maybe it's too early for that sort of organized effort.

Yes, this is still probably in the disorganised phase of the Soviet twenties, made worse by Tejekov being very backward. Still, some things will be revealed in time.

Mm, depending on where in the '20s we are, the Soviets are somewhere from 'disorganized' to 'the fuck is going on here'. Hell, Lenin might even still be alive.

Looks really interesting. Watch this spot.

Name: Arvil'
Skill: Medicine - Before the family was stripped of it's belongings, Arvil' practiced his profession with the medicines at hand, on those who needed it, which were many, for the family was large, and the community, clumsy. After the state declared the family to be kulaks, he was forced to use medicines found in the wild, which were not nearly as effective as his previous equipment.
Relation: Brother
Age: 34

Our ages being the same was a complete accident. Just letting you know.
