Stupid dwarves
« on: April 04, 2015, 05:45:25 pm »

I had recently purchased a ton of food from humans in my new fortress, but alas my dwarves for some reason weren't hauling it, so I deconstructed the depot and they still didn't haul it.  Eventually it started rotting and only then did they haul it into the refuse stockpile, is there any reason for this (might've accidentally pressed something), dwarves are set to gather food and they take it from everywhere else but not from the depot or the pile of food that was left after I removed the depot.  I already tried removing the food stockpile and re-designating it and that didn't help and the stockpile is set to take food from everywhere. I can't figure out what is wrong any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could have been food stockpiles were already full?

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

If that happens again, leave then in the depot. The wont rod while inside. Incidentally, did you alter their hauling labors?

^Yeah, food(item) hauling is different than refuse hauling.  Your dwarves may have refuse hauling enabled but not item hauling.

Also, it''s possible to have too much stockpile profiling and connections. Maybe it's empty, but receives only from connections?..

You probably don't have a proper access between your stockpile and depot.

Check your ramps, stairs, etc.

I've had this happen happen a few times and honestly all it was, was the dwarves being lazy. They did eventually haul everything away but it took them several months of ignoring it before someone said, "Hey, maybe this stuff needs to be in the kitchens..." It's super annoying to me, because I prefer things to be in their proper place, but likely I had too much going on at the time, and those jobs were of higher priority.

If it happens again, try stripping all the jobs but hauling off a few and see if that helps. Also try checking to see if the job to haul the food was properly generated in the jobs list. I'd bet money that the jobs are there and the dwarves are just lazy jerks.

Well, my dwarves seem to be able to move everything else but the food from the depot to any other stockpile in the fortress.

That explains it, then. You don't have enough idlers, and too much jobs for your pop.
