Heh, I always end up with turtles instead of mussels, even though mussels generate on edge of my underground pasture (which counts as ocean I believe). Anyway, to fish is very easy and safe, because you don't need to go to the river or ocean or pool, you can make artificial pool (just one tile) underground, for example filling it from aquifer. It can deplete the surface pools' pool though.

I'm about 250 km from my computer so I'm not in any position to test either :P

There is actually a joke on the wiki page about the "aquifer turtle," but I thought that bug was fixed.

My fisherdwarves seem to have stopped turning up so many mussel shells, so I entered the dfhack command to list all populations in the region.

I don't think the mussels will ever stop.

I get the same with turtles on my current embark, but I do have a brook which freezes for half the year, presumably offering plenty of time for the stocks to build up.

There are definatly no mussels to be found around my fortress anymore, as my supply of mussel shells - after peaking at around 2400 - has dropped almost below 2000 by now and my fisheries don't have any new mussel shells in them. The fortress is just short of 7 years old now, so the supply didn't last very long, I'd say.

It's pretty strange. The population is listed as "innumerable", yet there is nothing to be caught in the river!

So... does anyone know that neat trick on DFHack that repopulates rivers? I would like to reanimate my river, but I dunno how to DFHack.

Maybe DfHack is of the camp that believes 0 isn't a number

I'm not sure but I think you asked to see the population in the whole area/world? and not just on your map. I found that 'region-pops list' and 'region-pops list-all' give pretty different results, and 'region-pops list' often shows me the population of fishes and mussels at 0 if they fish too much. I simply ask in winter to repopulate :
region-pops incr MUSSEL 100 (or less, or more)
region-pops incr FISH_SALMON 100
region-pops incr FISH_SHAD 100
region-pops incr FISH_PERCH 100
or whatever. You can add more giant cave spiders if you like :)

It was innumerable even without the -all, but adding 5000 new mussels did work. Strange, but thanks anyway! :)
