They also used to make lead warhammers, and gladiators used lead knuckles.  Slingshot bullets were made of lead too.  The Romans also covered iron constructions with lead to keep them from rusting, but that's not an issue for dwarf fortress yet.
Lead warhammers have to be a thing in DF: surely it's the obvious metal to use, where available, as it is a smidge denser than silver and far less valuable. I worked out recently how to get DF to allow me to make them, but I forgot by the time a new version came out.
I once had an embark with nothing but lead, no other metals. I modded the game to let me use lead armor and chains. Sadly I was not paying attention and designated a room to be dug out through a candy tower, so I dont know how well it would have worked out.

All you have to do is go into "inorganic_metal.txt" and add [ITEMS_WEAPON] to the metal you're looking to modify. If you wanna make lead bolts you also do [ITEMS_AMMO]

Lead-as-good-warhammer-weapon is only possible at all due to the fact that weapon damage is not implemented yet in DF. With an IMPACT_FRACTURE of 42000, the force required to smash a copper breastplate would break the warhammer into pieces. It's probably best not to include things that assume that some incomplete feature will remain incomplete indefinitely.

I know we cannot separate weapon and ammo metals, but are lead tipped arrows or bolt unrealistic ? At least that would be a way to get rid of the metal (and cause pollution, for more angry elves).

Otherwise we can mod lead gaze in. Real life crystal glass is much more of a problem because sand cannot reliably defined in a reaction and we'd need to redefine every glass furnace jobs.

Lead for ammo is fine, since you're not too worried about recovering the ammo.

Well well, who knew? Clearly not me! I'm tempted to suggest that, for players at least, we perhaps ought to be left to discover that kind of thing for ourselves (once it is implemented). Added Fun, you know.

Well, you can't rule it out 100%. If multiple weapon materials become a thing then Lead could be used as a core with a Steel or Adamantine shell.

Adamantine can be a single atom thick around lead and still be exactly as strong/rigid due to its perfect inelasticity.

Are you sure?  We use lead hammers even in modern times.  I always thought lead was more likely to deform rather than break.  I'm also pretty sure that romans used lead in their weapons, though I'm not sure if they were completely lead or mostly lead or just partially lead.

Are you sure?  We use lead hammers even in modern times.  I always thought lead was more likely to deform rather than break.  I'm also pretty sure that romans used lead in their weapons, though I'm not sure if they were completely lead or mostly lead or just partially lead.

Probably lead-cored. Adds extra weight to the weapon, but also adds that weight to hitting people and the other material between the lead and the thing being smacked would keep the lead from deforming/deforming as badly. Maces and staves were often partially cored with lead if I'm not mistaken (in the striking parts) and wouldn't be surprised if hammer heads were/are too.

That sounds like a terrifying combination, lead filled adamantine war hammers.

Another use for lead would be in lead pipes when toady gives them to us... but we all know how that would work out, but we also know how much the players will care.

Hammers are usually a single piece of steel on a wooden stick. That's enough density for a nail and it's simpler to produce.

DF's weapon design is still incomplete, it is missing the loss of energy due to metal deformation (lead) or lack of transmitted strength (whip). That is why it's a little weird for now.

Warhammers are usually very different from normal hammers.
