A few questions - vault/cave/fame/quest log, etc.
« on: April 01, 2015, 01:32:52 am »

I've checked wiki thoroughly, but still cannot find answer to these problems:

1. About vaults:
1.1 I found a vault and I raided it. (yeah I'm a newbie but I'm also a necro) Near the bottom I found a area with lots of downward/upward slopes. Some of them leads to a lever, and the others leads to a small 1x2 tile room (only has two upward slopes). This area seems to be designed intentionally because it is different from other parts of the vault, and it is as far as I can get. There is no "bar" to be raised by levers. (I have pulled two levers so far, have not seen any effect) Has anyone seen a vault like this?
1.2 All I have found on angels are "large" clothes. (I am a human) Is this the case for all vaults?

2. About caves/lairs
2.1 What is a cave entrance like? I've came across two caves, but cannot find neither entrances. Compass points one cave to be on a apprx. 30x30 tiles hill top, and the other is near a 1x2 pond...(That is the only downward path I find in the area)
2.2 "Death floor hatches". I've seen lairs, sometimes the entrance is a downward slope, sometimes it is a 1x2 area. But there was one time I met a downward slope, which when it is blocked from my sight appeared to be a hatch, pretty weird. I moved from all directions into it and after about ten attempts I somehow got into it, but can never come back to the ground. I've tried to walking to that tile, climbing...nothing workings. Is it some kind of a bug?

3. Quests
3.1 What is the best way to locate a quest target? Some times the direction just point to a ruin or a region, so I have to walk a lot to get to the target, and in most cases I just had to give up.
3.2 Why sometimes the monster is not in its lair for days? I thought ruins are connected to underground caves so the monster might be moving around underground, but last time I found an enclosed dorf ruin occupied by some monster, (according to Legend) but it was still not in the ruin.
3.3 What the hell is a "The Soaked Wraith"? This is the monster I mentioned above, but I cannot look it up in "historical figures". (neither a titan nor a forgotten beast)

4. Fame
4.1 How do I raise fame? I see people discussing "legendary hero", etc. Where can I see my fame?
4.2 How to delete useless info in the log? (say, some stupid animal attacked me) I know mentioning my past heroic events can increase fame, but memorize those dead names and searching them from dialog options is just tedious. Any way I can get rid of unimportant dialogs?

5. Actions
5.1 Can I dig natural/artificial walls like in DF mode? (I have the pick of iron and will of steel!)
5.2 Can I make use of workshops?
5.3 Can I expand my group? Every time I try to claim a new territory, the dialog option always brings out a new naming screen.
5.4 Can I create my own civilization? I played a elven outcast before. (my civilization was wiped out) When I claimed a site, I noticed that my legend says I founded an "unkown civilization". Any way I can create a new playable dwarven civilization?
5.5 Is there any quick way to get rid of undead followers?

6. DF Hack. My game often crashes in adventurer mode while "offloading site" in wait/sleep/travel screen with DF Hack on. Is it a common problem? I'm on 40.24 with LNP.

Thanks a lot!

1.1
Sometimes there is a bug that the way further down is blocked by floor tiles. The only way to counter this is by using "cheatmode" (i.e. dfhack) to remove those tiles.
1.2.
It's random.
I came across some vaults with normal-sized angels.

2.1.
Usually its a lair with a downward option inside (stair/slope).
2.2.
Try using Alt+movement key while standing adjacent to the hatch. It's the same problem as the hatches on top of goblin towers.

3.1.
Talking about a rumour and then asking for the specific site. The person you're talking with will point you towards the lair/camp.
Or you can hire a guide who will lead you to that place.
3.2.
It can wander around in near proximity.
Sometimes they move further away. Just keep asking people in that area and maybe they will update the location.
3.3.
Are you sure that "The Socket Wraith" isn't the beast-title? Such as night freak or backward monster?
Is this his whole name?
And are you sure that it's a beat at all?
It could be the name of a group, too (I had this problem once where I thought I would search for a monster in legends mode but when I looked at the civ screen suddenly I found the name and it was a band of criminals).

4.1.
Slaying mosters and telling about using the rumour system.
Rescuing children (this is the best/fastest way to gain reputation).
4.2.
Just by time.
You can filter the rumour system but sometimes the kill-info won't appear.

5.1.
Yes, by using dfhack.
5.2.
Maybe mods but since now I didn't found one.
5.3.
Unfortunately, no.
5.4.
Only modding or using dfhack.
5.5.
Let them be occupied by killing things and run.
Or slay them.
Or tell them to wait and leave the area.

6.
No. I had only one crash since 40.xx.
Do you just use LNP or have you changed some raws too?

1. About vaults:
There are bugs in vault layout generation. Not all vaults' angels are large-sized, that's also random.

2. About caves/lairs
The entrance is usually obscured by topography; if you go all the way around it, up and down the sides until you've fully mapped it, you'll find the way in. To get through hatches over ramps, you have to "careful move" the right direction into it, then you'll get the downward or upward option. For the moment that the hatch is open, you can pass it like any other ramp. Also if you stand on top of one, nothing can get through it, so it can be a lifesaver.

3. Quests
If your quest target is roving, they'll appear on the fast travel map as an asterisk, but I think this depends on your tracking skill. Turn on tracks and you may see a trail where the target has left their lair. Vampires in this version almost never stay in their lairs, werebeasts may wander but not very far.

4. Fame
Slay a beast or megabeast, or rescue children, then tell people about it. Your fame only grows with the site that you spread the news to. And you can't delete the spam from the log, regrettably.

5. Actions
5.1 Can I dig natural/artificial walls like in DF mode? (I have the pick of iron and will of steel!)
5.2 Can I make use of workshops?
If you're using dfhack, there's the advfort gui. Whether that's a cheat or a mod is subject to interpretation. The dfhack command to open the gui is "gui/advfort". Read the manual for more detail on the options.

5.3 Can I expand my group? Every time I try to claim a new territory, the dialog option always brings out a new naming screen.
Each site needs its own site government group. By default they're all part of your civ.

5.4 Can I create my own civilization? I played a elven outcast before. (my civilization was wiped out) When I claimed a site, I noticed that my legend says I founded an "unkown civilization".
Now this I've never heard of. What did you do to get this?

Turn TWBT off or to Legacy TWBT. If you're using LNP, the option is on the graphics tab, "Print Mode". TWBT is nice, but runs too unstable in adventurer mode.

Thanks for the answers! Solved most of my problems.

1.1 How do I dig/remove tile in DFHack? The path was indeed bugged and blocked by a floor tile. I had pick so I thought I'll just dig with gui/advfort, but every time I try to dig the floor tile with my <l> mode cursor, nothing really happens. Fortunately there was another room two wall tiles away so I could "RemoveConstruction" and continue.

3.3 Yeah it turns out to be a goblin civilization led by the demon "Distruth Hatedrumor" who also created the vault. I'm on my way to find the demon, and is there any way to wipe-out a civilization? (except for killing every single member, of course)
Interestingly the Reclaim screen only mentioned the name "The Soak Wrath" that pillaged the fortress, did not mention it is a goblin civilization.

5.5 I've actually tried all of these before, but not really very effective.
Run away: does not always work. I did this tons of times but after a while(especially waiting) they often come back.
Killing them: ...really slow and difficult
Let them wait: sometimes they just follow anyway. Pretty strange behavior.

6. It turns out to be a problem with print mode TWBT.

4. Does this mean I have to spread my past behavior to every single site?

5.1 I have not figured out how to dig. I have the pick in hand, and <l>, choose a floor/wall tile, but nothing happens. I can remove construction in this way, tho.

5.4 I basically started an elf from an eliminated civilization. I born at another civilization's forest, chased by a bunch of elves but escaped. I joined the nearest mead hall for protection. I don't remember if I claimed the site tho, it seems I did not. Then I just retired because the elf starting gears sucked. And this is what I have in legend:

6. Yeah it is the problem with TWBT. Other print modes work fine.

If you really want to get rid of them quickly and don't care if they disappear forever, just exterminate them with dfhack.

Update: it turns out that demon was struck down by a tiger about 600 years ago...

I've seen an elephant killing a roc. But tiger killing demons...lol

Doesn't simply hitting them once cause them to go neutral and stop following you?

oh getting rid of undead followers is a case of the interaction not having a Speak function
modding the secret to give can_speak or Can_learn or intellegence would fix the lack of talking.
and allows you to tell them to wait somewhere or say arm them weapons.

Yes, unfortunately. I've heard fame spreads in enough time, but I've never seen it spread beyond the site.

Your pick has to be the only thing in your hands to Dig, and the surface has to be solid rock, not rock block. That's why Remove Construction worked; vaults are made of slade blocks. Pure slade is supposed to be undiggable anyway.
