"Interesting..."

Places such as this were rarely in perfect condition; Kanders feels along the walls and seams, searching for telltale cracks or signs of hidden entrances. Such was familiar to him, and thus comforting, in the midst of this horror.

Regina

The words themselves remain a mystery to you - and what you do glean is stranger still. The tongue is, in fact, familiar - it was heard once in the poem of a drunken bard, who claimed to have gone far into the mountains and dwelt among twisted little men. At the time you had dismissed it as a loosened tongue, but now you are less sure.
However, with no translation, you drop to the ground, dust yourself off, and head upstairs.

Felicity and Ayzebel

With the door wide open, you can see that the storeroom is in fact more like a small warehouse. A wide variety of gear lies on shelves, though by far the most common items are clothes - they lie in great piles against the rear walls. Barrels of shoes sit in front of them. A rack on the left wall holds staves, and one opposite on the right bucklers. Cloaks hang at numerous intervals. In the centre of the room is a heap of more irregular items - you think you can see a crossbow in the pile, though there don’t appear to be any bolts. Other items include trinkets and figurines, rings and amulets. After a moment's observation, however, you notice the strangest thing - none of the items visible contain any more metal than a few rusted nails.

Felicity: + cloak, + buckler.
Ayzebel: + cloak, + buckler.

Kanders

You examine the stonework closely, running your hands over it. It is slightly damp to the touch. The stones themselves appear well fixed - there is no sign that any will move. You would say it was built by experts if not for the fact that many of the component block show error in the finer details - a surface crack from an overzealous hammer blow, a scrape where a chisel has passed over the surface.

Regina moved to rejoin the group, thinking on what she had learned-very little, to be sure...

Her mind cast back to that long ago day

"...You have nothing I want." she said, fending off a 'friendly' hand.

A mission gone bust. All the way she had traveled-a month on the open sea, and the bastard Baron has died of a heart attack...well, they could call it the Gods Justice around here, or a Heartstorm. She had made sure-hired a cutup man to determine how he had died. Annoying. Alright, technically the mission was a success, but she could have stayed home and it wouldn't have changed anything. She briefly wondered if she should take credit...it was bad enough to be stuck in this shit-hole inn in the middle of nowhere-the Prancing Goose, or something like that...autumn storms-the rain had made any travel a poor prospect, so she was trapped. They charged more than the usual for watered down ale. Not that she didn't get plenty of water through her roof at night. And the usual attentions of local sots was always unwelcome.

She had been to dozens of these places in her career. At times, one could find good companionship-a way to wile away hours of boredom. Other times, you found yourself being bothered by lonely farmers. He hadn't even removed his wedding band...it put her in a truly foul mood, but she wouldn't let her fingers flex to the fine knife at her waist. Regina hadn't really killed anyone in anger in awhile...

The Bard in the corner was truly the centerpiece of this fine establishment. Falling off his seat. Piss drunk and a voice like the wind blowing through a hollow tree. He didn't so much play his sad, splintery lute as try to maul it in submission...worse, his song made a queer sort of madmans sense...enough you actually might catch the words...twisted little men...I've got my hands full of them...she had groused, nursing her ale.

She tried to recall the words he sang, trying to filter out the alcohol that had fuzzed her memory and the general depression of those long gone days and get to the truth of the matter.

Action: Rejoin the group. Try to remember more of that poem I once heard.

Also, looking to collect a dark colored pair of clothes in my size I can wear, a buckler, and a stave. Inspect the pile of irregular items more closely. I could probably use that crossbow...

Felicity was excited to see the large pile in front of her. "Would you look at what somebody did with iron nails! These are so pretty." She tried on one of the amulets before turning towards Ayzebel. "What do you think?"

You would say it was built by experts if not for the fact that many of the component block show error in the finer details - a surface crack from an overzealous hammer blow, a scrape where a chisel has passed over the surface.

((And with that turn description, I fell in love with this game))

Kanders nods to himself, still half-dazed, before a brief moment of lucidity has him shaking his head to clear it. It works. It works because it's somewhat painful, but it works.

"Alright...so. Bah. I died. I think. Yeah, I died. Then, I was here, choosing a body. And I got this one."

He considers for a moment that he may be insane, before shrugging. Couldn't do anything about it if he was, and wouldn't help anything to think so. May as well go on what he knew. See if he could avoid dying a second time.

"So, then...there were those other guys...they went which way again?"

He looks around, trying to recreate the map of the place in his head. The explorer had become rather adept at that whilst spelunking; it was hard not to, if one wished to survive for long underground, through labyrinthine tombs and winding cave systems. Sense of direction might not be that great, but 'north' meant nothing below the surface.

Ayzebel smiled at Felecity again, her cheer infectious.
"hmm... I do think this one suits you more." She picked up a trinket of carved wood, smooth on her fingers.

"Oh that is quite pretty!" Felicity took the amulet and fastened it around her neck, taking comfort in its weight against her skin. "Thanks for looking out for me Ayz!"

Regina

You reach to the back of your mind for the memory, and are somewhat surprised to find it slip away. It is disturbing to think that it might not just be your body’s memories that were left behind on that noose.
Shaking it off for a second, you climb the stairs and turn into the storage room. Digging through the piles of clothing, you pull out a pair of dark brown travellers pants and forest green shirt - though not before a torn dress of royal purple gives you pause for reasons you cannot exactly explain. You pull the clothes on over the tattered rags you wear now, discarding the worst of them, and turn to the shelves.
The bucklers seem mostly unremarkable, and you take one with little reason. One of the staves, however, stands out from the rest. It is made from a sandy coloured wood and it’s carving seems almost crude. However, the wood is a faded sandy colour - and it reminds you of the gates of Bonap. It was said that the gates had been formed from the wood of a very rare tree, much harder than any battering ram. Of course, this hasn’t - hadn’t - come under test in your lifetime. Nonetheless, the wood feels satisfyingly heavy in your hands, and you tuck the bone shiv in your belt to free them.
With that, you turn to the pile. The crossbow is a light traveller’s design, all in working order, but a quick rummage confirms that there are no bolts. More usefully are a number of knapsacks - four of a decent size, and a couple of smaller, hip held ones. Amongst these are a great variety of devices. A lone blackjack sits alongside a pegleg and some forlorn looking toys. A signet ring, surface charred beyond recognition, sits on the tail of a small dragon statuette - it sits on it’s haunches, positioned to roar despite it’s missing lower jaw.

Felicity & Ayzebel

The first amulet is a strange thing - a circle, carved to look like woven vines, with glimpses of what might be a monkey’s face peering through. The second, and that which Felicity is now wearing, shows two fish, leaping in opposite directions, curled together like the yin yang symbol of the eastern mountains. It is carved from driftwood, and is rough to the touch, worn by sea salt and wind.

Kanders

You pause for a moment, before heading up the stairs. The door to your right opens into the storage room, where you can see many of the others, and the corridor continues to your left a few metres before turning back on itself - if you assumed that a room of similar size to the one below lay at the top of the shaft, such a room would share a wall with the corridor round the corner. As you climb the stairs, you notice that the slight flaws in the stonework continue, though, perhaps coincidentally - perhaps not - they seem to get rarer.

Embrus

You climb the stairs, seeing the storeroom to your right and the corner to your left. The storeroom clearly contains a fair amount, though it’s material value is somewhat doubtful in many cases. You cannot tell whether the corridor holds any dangers - or treasure - from where you stand.
((Aka - you could do with being a little more precise. I can’t reasonably describe every single item you could possibly take, nor am I going to send your character in blind without an explicit action. If you are looking for something specific, tell me, and I’ll tell you if you find it. If not, please propose somewhere to search. Cheers.))

Action: Take the a fanny pack and the crossbow-possibly fashion a leather/cloth cord rig to hold the crossbow across my back.  Take the blackjack if I can fit into my pack. Remove the string from the crossbow if I can do so without damaging it (if I can replace the string at a later time), and turn it into a makeshift garrote.

She reached out to ruffle Felicity's hair, the motion of a mother's rough affection, and stopped. She'd not had children. She wasn't a mother. Not her thoughts. Not her memories. She slipped the first trinket into a pocket, the something-strange nature of it making her feel it might not be best thrown away. Well, perhaps if they ever needed to trade in the future, some trade goods would come in handy.

"Yes, well. We have to stick together, don't we?"

She picked out those that looked the most valuable - perhaps the finest of a repeating mural, etc

She noticed the others slinking in, and called to them.
"What did you spot up there?"

"I heard three people talking, but...I didn't understand the words.

I heard a song about it once, but...something about twisted little men in the mountains...it's in the back of my mind, tip of my tongue. Can't quite remember. It's a disturbing thought. Like a hole in my memory. I can recall the inn, the color of the mans beard, who was accosting me. But I can't remember what I was drinking, or the name of the...man I had come to meet. I hope it's nothing more than shock, but...

What if death stole some of our memories? Or what if these new bodies came with memories of their own..."
she mused, looking for that dress once more.

Regina wondered how much she had really lost during the crossing.

Extra Action: Also, Examine that royal purple dress again, to see if any memories come back...

"Perhaps. When I was young, I knew a boy who was kicked in the head by a horse- he was lucky to live, but he lost all his memories, even his name - or how to walk. Perhaps the soul is held in the head, and some lingers. I have habitual motions that are not my own.

I suppose this kind of necromancy would carry a heavy price. Death is no kind lover to those who cheat her."

"Wheels within wheels...what if the remnants of these bodies souls linger inside us and want to live again, I wonder..." she says, more to herself.
