Square tileset or not
« on: March 29, 2015, 08:19:17 pm »

Just curious.

Square tilesets means those with a size of 8x8, 16x16, 24x24, etc....
The default ascii tileset is 8x12.

I haven't really bothered to change the graphics aside from the occasional tweak for my mods. I just like the original look better, now that I've gotten so used to it.

I found the vanilla aspect ratio really hard to plan with. Very difficult to allocate enough space when measurements are different depending on their orientation.

Using a square tileset in otherwise vanilla DF gives it a C-64 vibe that's nice and nostalgic, but not exactly an efficient use of screen space.  I was using the TrueType mode (and always on the lookout for dwarfy fonts) until mifki's Text Will Be Text plugin came around.  If you're using DFHack anyway, TWBT lets you have a square tileset for your maps and a rectangular one for text (plus some other awesome features that you can turn on or off à-la-carte).

I'm typically to lazy to bother changing to a square tileset. I stuck with ASCII because I preferred it, and like learning ASCII the rectangularity* doesn't bother me anymore, I see through it.

*Don't care if its not a word, I like it.

Also I might have to modify graphics settings just to play with this:

1pixel tileset > square and nonsquare tilesets

Square all the way...  It just annoys me when a room that should be circular becomes elliptical on screen. I also think that square letters are much more readable because none get squished too much and there can be actual space between them. I don't really see the need to put tons of data in as little space as possible with a decent 1080p-display.

1x1px looks sweet, but should probably be set to 1bit color.  Don't want to get distracted by flashy colors ::)

Agreed. I always use square fonts because it's annoying to have things stretched vertically.

I prefer square because it's easier to measure things and I'm also a little bit OCD... Having a 3x3 room that doesn't look square bothers me.

I just really don't like the look of the square tiles. They look like they're just the default tiles, except clumsily resized in paint.

There are a number of 16x16 tilesets that are more carefully designed, e.g. the MarbleDice set and derivatives
