An interest check/idea development thread for an idea I had. It's basically a sort of PVP game where three to four players start a record label in a fantasy world with dragons, orcs and dwarves. The goal is to be the biggest record label and eliminate the competition, competing against controversial media, angry parents, the government, fantasy cops and other record labels.
Through some magic bullshit, a "window" to another world appeared. Only humans seemed to inhabit this world. It was pretty much the same as the world this game will be set in, except for the emergence of hip-hop music. The wizards seemed to really like it, and hip-hop spread to their fantasy world over nearly 50-100 years.
The king back then didn't really like hip hop, so he mandated that a unified force of law and order to stop crime and suppress up-and-coming musicians. (Need a name for them. Imagine fantasy cops.) He also banned adventuring and questing, recruiting everyone to be white-collar wizard apprentices or farmers. Many followers of the alien magic known as hip-hop decided to say "fuck" (a word they learned from the other world) the king and continued adventuring anyways. These "adventurers" are looked down upon prissy parents, but looked up to by rebellious youngsters, hoping one day to "cap" a dragon and "bang" the princess.
Since the kingdom is basically communist pseudo-medieval, it's extremely hard to make a living. Four players decided to fuck the system and start a record label, distributing hip-hop wholesale, and inspiring people to stand up against some douchebag immortal king and his (unnamed fantasy cops).
Instead of clubs and bars, those generic RPG taverns will become hotspots for orc rappers and elf divas.
Instead of rapping about guns and gangs, they'll be rapping about spells and parties. Instead of rapping about how rich they are or how big their ****s are, they'll rap about how much loot they get and what level they are.
Instead of "fuck the police, coming straight from the underground!" zombies would rap "fuck the old king, reanimating straight from the underground!"
Instead of promoting guns, they promote swords. Instead of promoting drugs, they promote (mana? I don't know. Ripping it straight from Warcraft).
Instead of the media capitalizing on gang wars and such, they'd focus stories on adventurers who break the law by busting into dungeons and collect loot, or even violent criminals who challenge each other to duels on the street.
How do they spread and listen to music? They don't have phones or MP3s, so I was thinking of some magic (crystal?) that can store sound and be replayed magically. (Open to more creative ideas.)
Game mechanics! I horribly, horribly suck at statistics and creating a balanced system. What system do you guys use (or would use) in a PVP game? Obviously there needs to be money. Then stats for adventurers (but instead of STR, INT, or END, they'd have creativity, showmanship, and rapping/singing stats. Need to work on what stats needed to be added too.) How do those stats affect how good their songs are? How well they perform on stage? How much money is made? How is it calculated?
Names for stuff and interesting fantasy world versions of our things. What is money called? How do they listen to music? How is media presented to the masses? Etc.
Will add more when people suggest stuff or I think of something.
Inspired by the FOX TV series Empire. Will update OP when people give ideas, comments and criticisms.
