Lack of Hostiles
« on: March 26, 2015, 12:38:55 am »

So I recently booted up Dwarf Fortress for the first time in a while with the most recent updates... And, apart from the odd werebeast, I'm not encountering any hostiles in fortress mode. No titans, no forgotten beasts, no goblins and no kobolds. I've created three different worlds and thus far I've not encountered anything except werebeasts. I've not put a fort in any evil biomes or near towers, but I have gone out of my way to make sure I'm embarking in areas with goblins as neighbors.

Anyone else experiencing this?

in the current version (DF2014 in general) goblins do not siege very often at all. Ive seen goblins but their sieges are rare, ive seen thiefs, baby snatchers seem to be much rarer this version compared to previously. I've seen titans, i think it might just be your world gen or bad luck if you arent seeing those but they aren't exactly one per year or anything like that.

Werebeasts seem to come around more than anything else. I like to embark near towers in DF2014 because necromancers siege early (some of their earliest sieges might comprise of only a single undead even) and often. if your fortress is well locked down (Ie - the necromancer himself is only getting through to your corpse and refuse piles if your military is slaughtered) you won't deal with massive undead uprising within the fortress like an evil biome, but you get the fun of fighting the undead.

Necromancer sieges are a lot of fun, over a hundred armored undead vs a full fortress military is quite the battle

Being right next to goblins does not always gauruntee seiges sadly, or I would be swimming in goblins every fort I start. Chances are they either don't have the population to siege you or they're choosing other sites to attack.

- you need at least 80 population to get a siege, as well as wealth
- rivers block army travel
- goblins are taken from civ populations now, so check if there is enough of them after generating a world
- embarking closer to goblin cities supposedly helps to get sieges more often
- embark near tower to get sieged every few years

Very savage worlds, or worlds with a lot of megabeasts/titans, will kill off a lot of potential enemies and keep them from attacking you. Also, it'll take at least a few decades of worldgen to build up gobbo populations enough for them to care about attacking you.

Goblins won't show up at all until you hit population 50

- rivers block army travel

Everything you said was accurate except this bit. Toady One has clarified that rivers DO NOT block army travel. His original comment about army travel being blocked by water could certainly be taken to imply that, but he later clarified that armies can cross rivers, and he only meant oceans and lakes when saying that water blocked travel.

Here's a DFHack script that will let you force a siege. I haven't tried it, so I'm not sure how well it works.

I got a question for everyone that is related to this.  My most recent embark has all the races on the map, but goblins are technically out of range from where my fortress is.  I.e. on the map menu when choosing embark spot, tabbing through the various information windows Goblins do not show up unless I move the cursor farther down south by maybe 10 squares.

Question is, since i *DO* have goblins and they are not trapped via island or anything, is it possible that I will still get sieged?  So far a few years in I have not, but will they possibly come within range to start sieging eventually if they keep spreading and taking over nearby cities, etc?  Since the changes to Civs and invaders not being generated on the fly I wasn't sure if this specific situation was now covered or what.

I've never tested this, but my guess is that IF the goblins end up owning a site near enough to your fortress, and IF that site develops a large enough population of goblins to start mounting sieges, then it's possible that you could eventually see a siege even having embarked too far from any goblin sites to get them initially. But I'd assume that even if it's possible, it's likely that it won't happen, and could take decades in-game even if it did happen. We may never know for sure (barring a statement from Toady One on the issue) if it's possible, since testing it would require playing a number of very long fortresses which are a: too far from goblins to be sieged initially, and b: in a location that goblin armies could path to (i.e. a path exists which does not cross oceans, mountains, or lakes)

I embarked to a forest and built an elaborate above-ground wooden fortress with palisade walls and bridges... then hit 'c' and discovered there were no gobbos on my civ screen. All I've gotten so far are a few werebeasts and forgotten beasts.

Can humans and elves still siege you? I've murdered a few human diplomats and rubbed wooden bins in the elves' faces, but I'm not sure what pisses them off the most. I think the human caravan hasn't come this year, so that might be a sign.

Think of it like Sim City, except with rival mayors that seek to destroy your citizens by arming legions of homeless people and sending them to attack you.

During one of the 0.40 updates (not sure which one might have been the first one) civs were made to no longer have infinite reach. At the time I was like oh my gosh this is a huge change why is nobody talking about this, but nobody I talked to seemed to think so. Anyway, the limit is now 25 map tiles, like when you're on the embark screen and you press an arrow key once.

What's listed when you hit 'c' while playing is just the civilizations that have been encountered at your fortress. Even if you have tons of nearby goblins who will siege you constantly, they won't be listed there until the first time goblins actually show up at your gates. You have to check before embark to know if there are any goblin (or other race, for that matter) civs within range to interact with you.
