Me miserable! which way shall I fly
Infinite wrath, and infinite despair?
Which way I fly is Hell; myself am Hell;
And, in the lowest deep, a lower deep
Still threatening to devour me opens wide,
To which the Hell I suffer seems a Heaven.

Hurm, I somehow missed that the expansion was going to be split into two parts.

I don't really feel inclined to load up the game just to play through the expansion part 1 stuff with the party I finished the game with, but if I do a new full playthrough now (which is/was on my list of gaming things to do - I was holding off on it to include the expansion) I'm not sure I'll want to do a third playthrough when part 2 comes out.

This is why I dislike piecemeal dlc when it comes to quest and/or story content - I'd much prefer that sort of thing be released all at once in one big expansion.

I assume that when part 2 comes out there will be a bundle anyway. Saw an update for PoE downloading and thought now was the time to actually finish the game, but now I definitely need to wait...

Looks like story isn't particularly linked to the base game, from what I've seen? It's a parallel plot that runs in the new areas, like the Tales of the Sword Coast content in Baldur's Gate. It would feel awkward to me to start a new game to play the new content when it's basically separate anyway, but I can see the appeal if that's your thing.

Part 1 and part 2 can be purchased together now for $25, from what I saw. Just look for the "Expansion Pass" bundle. Save $5 from buying them individually and get the second when it comes out. Or probably wait until then and do the same thing, then play through all the story when you have access to it all.

I still never finished the base game, so I still have to get around to doing that. I'm off to figure out what I get without purchasing (if anything). I'm hoping to at least get the companion/pet AI upgrades and the UI/information upgrades without having to pay, but I'm not sure.

Edit: Also worth mentioning, if you backed the game on kickstarter, there was a tier that got you the expansion for free. Check your account here to get the link to unlock it if you backed at that tier.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Yeah, it's basically side-quests from what I've read, ToSC style.  Apparently about 10 hours of content for part 1.  Which for me isn't long enough to get as invested as I like to with rpgs, especially as enough time has passed since my first playthrough that any investment I felt with that character/party has long since faded - it'd probably take those 10 hours to rebuild it, by which time it's over again.

Pretty sure the AI and UI stuff are all included in the base game - there's some patch notes here that despite the date listed apparently apply to the patch that went live today.

Arise, dead thread!

So I was in the mood for a classic style CRPG without delving into Baldur's Gate's decades old mechanics, and picked this up. So far I've sunk a few hours into it, picked up two party members in addition to my own starter character, and finished a few side quests. It's been fun!

Without spoiling the game, are there any tips for a first time playthrough anyone wants to share?

Save a lot. Nothing like having to grind through an entire area again because the last encounter wipes out your party.

Make some party members of your own. Most of the ones you find aren't worth it (they're slightly less banterrific than BG2's companions, and very far from later Bioware companions in terms of what happens to them or what they do). Keep one or two you find interesting, maybe swap them out for different ones as needed.

And if you do make your own, don't give them voices. Saves you a lot of repetitive sound bites.

EDIT: Oh, and don't neglect the defense scores on normal difficulty. Soaking up damage with your face isn't nearly as good as being able to avoid it entirely in this game.

I'm struggling a bit picking my main character class.

First I tried a chanter... but turns out that while conceptually not bad, actual chanter gameplay is boooooring. Very very boring

Then I tried a wizard. OK so far, but high maintenance. A bit redundant having Aloth already, too. Briefly considered a druid, but spiritshift is lame.

Now I'm trying a cipher, but I dont know if I'm totally happy either. Was considering trying a priest, but Wael priests apparently have the worst spells and the weakest interactions. And I dont really want to play a Magran priest because it substracts from Durance.

Sooo... from a combined interesting gameplay/RP pov, I'm struggling. What to do? Try another chanter? Keep going with the cipher? Go for Wael priest despite the lack of interactions? Dunno... I'm   torn.

I think just stick with it. I found all the character classes to be really boring too. The cipher seems to have the most additional dialogue and gameplay opportunities though, from what I've seen.

Play a monk, jumpkick dragons in the face. Never feel unhappy again.

Class-specific choices and dialogue are few and far between. Ciphers probably have the most, yeah, so might be worth sticking with it for that alone. I never got much use out of Cipher abilities myself compared to the kind of stuff Wizards and Druids bring to the table. There's some real goodies in there though.

How did I never spot this game before? Looks interesting, might give it a shot soon.

I actually should probably try it again at some point.

I gave it up after a few days when it came out because I got so bored of all the dialogue. Also the combat system was really tedious. There was no automation or anything for your teammates so you had to micro everything with the clunky UI.

Maybe they've changed it since then. I know there's expansions and stuff now. I think they also added voice acting? Not sure.

I've been playing it recently since I got it through Humble Monthly. There's limited voice acting for the more important dialogue, and your companions occasionally say things while walking around and in combat. There's also AI for your party in combat that you can mess around with so that they do what you want. I find that I still have to micromanage my magical companions in big fights though.
