As Zikal took in the sights of the Royal City, he noticed the mishmash of nobles who walked the streets. There must have been some sort of ball or fair held recently, and all the nobility looks to have been invited.

His musings about nobility brought reminded him of his old castle home. Plenty of courtiers around Saltar gossiped about the wonders of the Capital, and both father and Rolf held regular trips to here... if there was a party for nobles recently, then perhaps someone from Saltar might still here.

Anyway, that comes later. First, I need to see what the poster is about. Any poster with the word 'dangerous' needs a closer inspection.

Inspect the wanted poster more thoroughly, then follow after Wilhelm to his destination. Keep an eye out for any Saltar nobles I may recognize.

Roll 49

Inspect the wanted poster more thoroughly, then follow after Wilhelm to his destination. Keep an eye out for any Saltar nobles I may recognize.

The guard near the poster sees you inspecting the photo.
Guard: She's a dangerous one. Rides this animal she names "Karlo." It'll tear out your spine if you're not careful.

You then accompany Willhelm, passing by a nun handing out candies to children in front of the church.

If I know the way from a previous visit, go right there. If not, ask directions to the Right Ward from the nearest guardsman/beggar, then go there.

You don't remember if you've been here before. Not in recent times, at least.

[4][4] You are able to find ample directions though. The church is visible once you pass the wooden gate separating the Right Ward from the Entry Ward. Its tallest spire is topped with an arrow reaching to the skies, surrounded by a teal Juniper groomed to coil around the entire building and wrap the spire in a helical fashion.
The Juniper's smooth, brown bark reminds you of the lush swamp back in the forest, where many of the lesser bushes found themselves protected by the canopy. There plants grew free and green. Many wonder why it doesn't burn up in the Ashstorm like all protected do. The Church does not cover it during bright weather.

You walk past a nun near the entrance who is currently giving candy to children. A rare substance from the Sylvan lands called "chocolate," worth quite a lot especially this far inland.

Inside the church the Ashlight service has just ended, and commoners are bustling through the halls. The bishop, standing in the midst of the crowd, sees you at the entrance and signals for you to come over.

Maryam looks at the situation folding in front of her, and purses her lips. She then takes a deep breath, and attempts to hoist herself up, and hang onto the walls.

[5][6][4] The walls are ridged and simple enough to grab onto. They are warm and slightly wet with gel ooze from the Ashstorm that just occured. The lesser sun, for the past few hours, has been blazing with brightness, burning all left in the open, except that which is protected by natural leaves or a special coating procured from the Universities, who hold a strict monopoly on ooze production.

The wetness makes the walls difficult to climb. Instead you move the cart over, rest the barrels on the handles, and climb up. From here the voices are just barely audible.
Voice 1: {in Ontic} I say, this is some jolly good tea. You should have some!
Voice 2: {in Ost} Cut the crap! And I am not interested in any of your daughters or contacts. I just want a package shipped.
Voice 1: {in Ost} I see. What brings you to my residence, then? Surely the merchants can handle the job much better than a simpleton such as myself.
Voice 2: The package won't pass customs.
There is a short pause.
Voice 2: Good. Here's the details.

You hear the crumpling of papers. The individuals are fairly silent from now on.

"Guess what's next, Klein." Leonhard said as he rubbed behind the black-furred cat's ears.

Go find an specialist to check one of the coins and tell me their value. In case they are valuable, go to an inn with mercenary population to check for possible hirelings.

You stumble into a local merchant district and come across faces of all colors: blue, orange, and even ash-gray. A dwarfish man named Emril from Yohan (all the way across the Empire) is widely regarded here as an expert in foreign mintage. In fact, he is the local banker, and routinely sells gold, silver, and aluminium to those looking for financial security.

Emril: These coins are completely authentic. If I may ask, what brought you to think they could be false?

Where there are merchants of goods, there are also merchants offering more violent services. The Tarca Rifle Corp. is here with its representatives, offering a battalion of troops to any nobles willing to pay the price of victory.
Riding along their coattails are hedge knights and bounty hunters of all stripes, who hope to woo more price-conscious individuals with a more humble offering.
-The Knights of Riverford are an Ontic group of four travelers. They offer their swords, but are lacking much in the way of gunnery, or ranged combat in general.
-An elf crossbowman named Johor is offering an escort to travellers for the price of an Hour per hour, discounting sleep. He warns you that he is a heavy sleeper.
-A pair of elf sisters who call themselves the Night Witches are here. They say they are tracking Kari, who is a traitor to their circle, but are willing to accompany travellers for a negotiable down payment.
-An Adept called Bach is offering his services as a spellscript, writing tomes for profit. He is also looking to accompany a pixie hunting band to acquire new book material, free of charge.


You also hear Efa's voice, somehow. It doesn't sound like it's coming from any particular direction, but it's there.
"I found a merchant who has a boat, and is heading to Berlina where the delta is. He could potentially be our ride for half the trip.
The problem is that he thinks I'm a criminal or something, I don't know why."

(5)(2)(2) Venturing further around the woods and near the farmer's fields, Efa narrows her search down to a single merchant, one of the Ranj merchants, whom she pesters with questions and comments in an attempt to figure out where he is going. The poor old man doesn't get a break.

He soon snaps and answers that he is going to Berlina, and that troublemakers aren't welcome aboard his boat. He whips his mule and continues on.

She talks by mind, not by voice. You hear her.
"I found a merchant who has a boat, and is heading to Berlina where the delta is. He could potentially be our ride for half the trip.
The problem is that he thinks I'm a criminal or something, I don't know why."




It is the 7th hour after noon. The skies are cloudy and it is starting to hail.

His Excellency: Indeed! I was waiting for this. Come, I'll tell you what this is all about. Your companion can come too.

He leads you to his office in the heart of the building, below stairs. It is a small, modest room, lit only by candlelight.

His Excellency: The cylinder you brought me contains the addresses of various persons of interests and magic cults across the region. Of key interest are the ones close-by: the "Ardour" cult, the "West Fallen" cult, and a notorious group of theives known for sacking libraries led by a man called "Maimondes." Hmm, that name does ring a bell...
He sets the list on the table.
Bishop Atarkxi: Oh forgive me, you are visitors! How could I just ask you to listen to me without first making accomodations? I shall go get you a drink. What would you two prefer?

The bishop seems to have received a list of magic cults and groups that misuse thoughtform.
The Church's role in controlling the use of thoughtform is second to none in the the Empire. Various local lords and dukes have tried and failed to crack down on abuse, but the Church has proven to be very effective at combatting witchcraft, though it does so rather pointedly.
According to the letter, twelve unlawful groups have recently been exterminated in the Ostlands, five new ones have popped up, and there are twenty groups still at large, three of which are in the royal province.

He then offers you a drink. What would you like?

[3][1][4] You check with some of the rejected performers, who are off huddled together in the alley nearest to the noble's location on the sidewalk.
The group consists of three men and two women.
The men consist of one fat alcoholic beggar, one malnourished instrumentalist whose instrument has just broken down in the marketplace, and one man wearing a heavy-set coat lined with pockets. The last one seems a bit dizzy, occasionally bumping into things.
The women consist of one singer who was fired from a local pub and one Borian who claims to be the famous Borian writer Anton Lebowski.

None of these are painters. But it seems that the noble, a rather orange man of the Ranj, is well-known for his great and luxurious mansion. They are willing to help you, having nothing better to do, in exchange for a favor each.
-The alcoholic wants you to buy him a drink.
-The instrumentalist is actually blind. Since he already has someone fixing his instrument, he doesn't want anything in return though.
-The man in the coat doesn't seem to be responsive. He collapses in a heap on the ground and props himself up against the wall.
-The singer wants to find her a job.
-The writer wants you to make her real identity known when you are there so she can get paid.

The noble encountered a woman in a long scarlet robe and hat and is now talking to her. The hat has several white spots on it, and she keeps her head down as if she doesn't want anyone to see her eyes.

Noble: Greetings! I believe we have met before!
Efa: Hmm?

The orange-faced noble smiles.
Noble: It was at a ball in Thrynheim, I met someone with tha exact outfit. And... we danced. Do you remember? I am Vladik Hermholtz Messier, Baron of Opper-Zeelee.
Efa: Did you see my face?
The noble's face freezes.

I thought I was the only one... you can hear Efa's thoughts, although these are much quieter than the broadcast she sent out earlier.



It is the 7th hour after noon. The skies are cloudy and it is hailing rapidly.

Wings are helpful but... the others?

Efa raises the brim of her hat and looks the noble in the eye. The noble looks relieved.

Noble: I'm sorry! I must have mistaken you for someone else just now. Do you perchance work as part of a team? A travelling act, perhaps?

Go with the woman who is a singer, and try to help find her a job. Look around for nearby pubs or nobles, and ask if she can audition. Flirt a bit, to see if that helps.

Turn 49's actions: See if I can get a six-man squad from The Tarca Rifle Corp., and if so then haggle a bit via persuasion. Also volunteer information on Kari to the Night Witches, and also tell them she's seeking an Astrologer as her mark.

Turn 50's actions: Go check with Efa about that man she scared and see if he can be convinced to provide transportation.

Zikal pulled out the still-bloodied knife and presented it to the Bishop. "We found this knife in the hideout. It has the odd trait of paralyzing and, well, I believe 'sucking the life out of the victim' would be an apt description. It is certainly the work of a maleficar. It also refuses to be cleaned, so I do apologize for the mess."

Give the knife to the Bishop if he accepts it. If not, put the knife away.

It won't leave your hand, no matter how hard he pulls on it. You try leaving it on the table, but when the bishop grabs it he screams abruptly, redrawing your attention. It seems to have hurt his hand, though he shows no signs of injury.
Bishop Atarkxi: Ouch! This behavior, however, I understand...

Bishop Atarkxi: The knife is your memory. It cannot leave your possession. That, to me, comes off as a bit of a false flag. Willhelm, were you with him when he found the dagger?

-The Laughing Earl pays well thanks to its contituency of rich noblemen and travellers. There is a lot of competition, however. (-1 to getting a job, singer will accept any job)
-The Wizard's Bar is a place where a lot of adepts go (obviously). Most of the entertainers there aren't, though, and you heard a rumor that the last actress there was killed by a spell tome misfire only two days ago.

Turn 49's actions: See if I can get a six-man squad from The Tarca Rifle Corp., and if so then haggle a bit via persuasion. Also volunteer information on Kari to the Night Witches, and also tell them she's seeking an Astrologer as her mark.

Haggle: [3][5][6] Mercenary work is dangerous business, but actual casualty rates are fairly low for the Tarca Corp., given their expertise. They specialize in field warfare and artillery support, and a six-man squad escort--the minimum basic unit they offer, is considered a secondary service to them.
The agent sets the wage at 1 Hour per man, per hour. He claims this is a fair discount, considering the usual rate is 35 Hours per day, per man, for an escort.

The Tarca Corp. does not operate outside of the Empire, and a straight boat trip to the Great Desert will likely take three days, stopping for at least an hour at major port cities to buy supplies. Most merchants make three to four stops along the way.
If the riflemen are to accompany you on the boat, it would cost you well over four hundred Hours. But here they will only serve to provide protection against boarding--but river piracy is at its lowest since the pre-imperial days. A better idea ought to be arranging for an escort to meet you at your stops.

The agent offers to arrange for a six-man party at each stop for 6 Hours each stop. They'll look for you at the docks and collect payment as soon as they accompany you.
