Oscar grade movies/films?
« on: March 23, 2015, 03:38:15 pm »

So for awhile I tried to enjoy oscar winning films like Rain man, Imitation game, Birdman, a most violent year (it wasn't oscar winning but kinda cool and serious like one), and some other movies like that. But I just don't like them and I'm kinda of shamed of liking movies like Unfinished business and 50 shades of gray. It's not even that I like them but that I understand whats going on and I get engaged more. Not to say I don't get engaged in the ones mentioned above but still.

I am honestly tired of liking bottom of the barrel things in life and want to understand complex emotions that they show in oscar movies so my question is: How do I enjoy Oscar movies?

:o

Oscars are shit, go Cannes or go home :P

But to be less facetious, Oscars (or indeed any awards) aren't usually signs of good films. In my experience they tend to be given to certain kinds of films. For example I fancy myself a light film buff of sorts and all of the Sundance stuff I've seen I'd rate as horribly dull and trite. Similarly, Oscars tend to be given to certain kinds of films. If you like that sort then you'll enjoy them, but what if you don't? Ever heard of the concept of Oscar Bait? So don't fret too much about liking esteemed films.

But if you do want to try and find "good" (for objectivity and art don't really coexist), maybe try looking at other awards than Oscars? Or perhaps try Oscars from another time? Quick googling indicated that your stuff was from late 80's and -10's. Even if you don't end up enjoying them that much, just making the cultural journey of seeing what was considered good by some in the different decades can be an enjoyable experience by itself. Check something from the 70's, 90's or maybe early 00's. What resonated with the Academy Award crowd in the wake of Cold War ending? In the wake of 9/11 and second Gulf War? Maybe that sort of observation between film and real world could interest you, maybe not.

Another option is to look for various critics' top choices. Different critics and different institutions tend to rate things differently, odds are that 10's Oscar Institution isn't one that gels with you. Keep looking and something will probably click, but I wouldn't stress too much about it.

The way I found films that I liked, and that also tend to be highly regarded by various institutions, is I started looking into the works of directors I already enjoyed. Have you seen Full Metal Jacket or Clockwork Orange? You probably should if you haven't. If you have, well you might then be interested to know that the guy who made those also made a bunch of other films that are similarly awesome. Think back on some of the films you enjoyed, "smart/fancy/artsy" if you insist, and then check who made them. I tend to be a pretty auteur-centric viewer, but you could concentrate on a certain director, writer, actor or whatever else. Maybe you enjoy Johnny Depp but find Pirates of the Caribbean to be low brow popcorn flick? Do consider that he's often worked with Tim Burton and while Burton has a spotty record (IMO), it includes some relatively smart films. And from Burton it's only a few google searches to other interesting/deep/pretentious films with surreal elements. That's just to offer an example of how you could find some new (or old, I recommend old, old is good) interesting films.

Key here is to find stuff that you like, not to find stuff that other people say it's ok to like (though I will add that 50 shades is pretty horrid :P). Oscars isn't the only institution that tells people what to like, so don't worry if they're not the one for you.

There are plenty of films that win oscars and are just clinically average. However, I did enjoy both The Grand Budapest Hotel and Whiplash... but i'm a pop movie kind of guy. so ya. You can try the film festivals, they generally have a lot of great stuff. Try animated movies too, the big ones are usually quite excellent. Most of Disney and Ghibli to start.

Of course I don't really base my movie watching on the oscars... or at all really.

Try the highest rated movies on IMDB. Many of them did not win an oscar. With IMDB ratings you get raw public opinion, so it skews towards watchable movies rather than esoteric stuff aimed at awards.

And there are some that win Oscars that are actually legitimately bad... or ones that don't win but are actually really great.

The Oscars are kind of corrupt and shouldn't be taken as any sort of measurement of quality... but this has been known for ages.

I think the issue here is not about oscar-nominated/winning films per se, but more about getting to enjoy critically-acclaimed/ambitious films.

The short answer is: don't try to force it on yourself. The critics like ambitious films because they've watched so many that they learn to see the patterns and get bored by the lack of creativity. They're like in a constant TV-tropes mode.
It's like with anything else, really - the more you consume it, the more refined your tastes become. But it doesn't mean you absolutely should consume more of the thing.

That is to say, if you really need to learn how to enjoy these films, just watch more of films in general and you'll get there automatically. For better or worse.
And if you don't have the time to watch more films, don't beat yourself about it. There's plenty other things in life to waste your time on. Arguably, most more useful than cinema.

Well looking at the movies you selected you are watching what is known as "Oscar Bait" as in dour, depressing, sad movies.

You might just not like depressing movies.

Something can seem like much better writing that it really is, if it goes against the flow "expected" in "normal" movies. Hollywood is notorious for wanting to adapt everything with a "happy ending", so a sad or bittersweet ending seems revolutionary, whereas in a less "happy ending" obsessed movie culture it becomes mundane, so you don't get extra "award winning" points for that.

For example, when I first started watching Japanese anime movies, the sheer number of Bad Ends blew me away, you think "wow, they actually had the balls to kill off all their main characters!". But then you realize just how common this is in Japanese cinema and it's not like each movie director was pushing the envelope as much as you'd think. I'd say in anime, depressing endings are about 50/50 with happy endings.

It has a lot to do with the fact that Japanese story telling originally had a lot of "bad endings", especially when you get into ancient Japanese stories which almost NEVER had happy endings.

As well another reason for the Hollywood happy ending obsession has something to do with the depression as well as the fact that a lot of movies are "Family movies" and we are overly protective of children.

---

But frankly Reelya, before you complain more about "too many happy endings" just start watching really bad horror movies... and this constant torture porn that seeps into it where everyone just dies while being the biggest jerks possible.

Happy endings don't exactly take a lot of effort to get right, they are a conclusion.

Bad Endings need to be earned. Since "They struggled but it wasn't enough" is a terrible way to end a story.

I really dislike bad bad endings... Nothing sours a experience more. I'll take a completely unearned and terrible sappy ending over that any day.

Try Ben Hur. 11 oscars and very easy to follow.

Actors can get oscars more as a kind of long service medal and not just because it's there the best on nominated.

A lot of people feel that way. Didn't that movie bomb?

Then again Rain man was Oscar bait.

I do want to watch it again though... the main character is sort of a jerk who feels scorned by his father. I kind of want to see what happens.

The "Rainman" isn't the main character :P he is the title character.

I checked and it is actually quite weird all things considered. It didn't have a very impressive opening week end... But... contradictory to most movies work. It actually got MORE popular three weeks after release in the theatre.
