What alcohol doesn't taste like alcohol?
« on: March 22, 2015, 05:30:00 am »

So my body is pretty abhorant to alcohol. Just taking it in any amount gives me a huge stomach ache, I usually have to coddle drinks to even get them down, and I absolutely cannot stand the taste of most drinks (I absolutely cannot drink beer... Rum is the most drinkable for me)...

So I am wondering if there are drinks you can buy that disguise the alcoholic taste or take the edge off.

The usual idea is to mix it with sugary stuff. Drink margaritas all day then move to the spirits once your tastebuds died. Anything marketed for 12 year olds is a safe bet.

Or... don't drink. Your liver will thank you.

How about a very dilluted gin-tonic (or any other kind of cocktail). AKA: just put in it far less gin than you would...

I am usually so sensitive to the taste of alcohol, I can taste it in most disguised drinks, that diluting alcohol just makes me feel like I am drinking a TON of vial liquids.

Ugh, I am going to be an unsocial drinker forever!

What will I do about my jerk friends?
A) Be designated driver. Enjoy their drunk shenanigans and gratitude.
B) Hang out with them in other settings. Surely you have something more in common with them than the thing you don't have in common with them.
C) Find new friends you do have things in common with. You did just call them jerks after all.

As others have said, not letting yourself get peer pressured into drinking is the smart thing.

However, enjoying alcohol responsibly is also extremely possible. Drink in moderation, and know your limits. You'll have a better time overall if you do.

For specific types of drinks, a few of the following should give you a decent starting point.

Try alcoholic apple ciders. Go for ones with lower alcohol content, around 4-5% mark. They usually taste like fizzy apple juice, and the alcohol content is minimally noticeable.

For enjoying beer, a local variant for the younger crowd here is to take half a glass of bitter, lager, draft or IPA style beer and add half a glass of lemonade. These are most commonly known as Shandies.

For mixing spirits, be cautious. Vodka is likely to be your best choice of base alcohol for lack of taste, but this also reduces your ability to determine when you've had enough (or too much). My younger days saw me spend many an evening on my knees praying at the altar of the porcelain god for my sins in overindulgence. Get a standard shot measure so you know how much you're adding to your glass. Then mix with soft drink or other diluents to taste. Lemonade or orange juice are classics.

Check the alcohol content in your drinks before you start, and aim for no more than one alcoholic beverage per hour to avoid nasty effects. Exceeding this amount will likely impair your judgement and coordination and if you plan to drink more, make sure you're with friends you can trust to get you safely home. Another good tip is to pace yourself by drinking a non-alcoholic drink between each alcoholic one. Try not to drink on an empty stomach, and no more than five drinks total in one evening to be safe.

No, while long island iced tea is quite tasty, it is POWERFULLY alcoholic, and I can definitely taste it.

I expect it would make poor neon retch and have powerful stomach acid.

Instead, I would suggest being a "social drinker", but instead, drink Virgin versions.  Virgin margarita, for example. It contains ZERO alcohol. Drink it at the party, and people wont offer you drinks.

If you are actually looking for something to get you sauced-- I suggest using the alcohol as an ingredient in old fashioned puddings. A bottle of crown or dark rum can do wonders with old-world cakes and puddings.

So you have absolutely nothing whatsoever to add, but you just post in here purely to be a dick?

...Anyway, I don't have your issue with the taste, Neo, but I would possibly recommend cider. Alcoholic cider, since there is apparently some other kind getting around. That never tastes like alcohol to me when I drink it, to the point that I try not to drink it. :P
Also possibly try scotch mixed with cola? I've only tried that once, it tasted more like cola to me.
Or perhaps vodka mixed with something, but I've only really drank vodka as a shot so I can't help you there.
Happy drinking! :)

Try some liqueurs like Amaretto or Kahlua or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_liqueurs or a brandy - cognac, slivovitz, the various fruit flavored ones.

Rum and coke.  Gin and Tonic.  Whiskey sour.  Bloody Mary.  White Russian.  Sloe Gin Fizz.  Margarita.  Mai Tai.  (just tune these to where you are, don't try ordering anything too exotic in a dive bar - I'd get a blank stare if I tried to order a Mai Tai in my neighborhood corner bar).  Long Island Iced Tea (be careful, this one usually has a LOT of alcohol)

If you want a bit less alcohol-to-mix content, order some of the drinks that usually come in the short glasses in a bigger glass instead, it's a fairly common request just add "in a tall glass" after the cocktail name when  ordering.  Try light beers instead of ales, or a lager.

Random survival tips:  Take smaller sips instead of big gulps.  Some of the less-actually-tasty stuff may help by leading you to sip more than to take big drinks each time, one reason I like really bitter beers like Stone's Ruination.  Also, always ALWAYS get water and take at least a couple of sips between each sip of alcoholic drink.  After each couple drinks, get a soft drink instead of an alcoholic drink (we call it a 'spacer') - some of the places I go to have craft root beers, I *love* root beer.  Eat before going out, eat snacks while drinking.    You can order a "virgin" mixed drink, that's one with no alcohol - a "Virgin Mary" is a Bloody Mary without the vodka for example.  If you're the one going up to the bar and ordering, no one even has to know :D

If you don't want to get trashed... don't drink.

If you DO want to get trashed, yeah, mix up stuff. Whiskey/apple juice is good, as is whiskey/Coke.
