Guardian 4maskwolf smiled wearily at the other Guardians, "You are right to be suspicious at such a time, and it was incorrect of me to assume myself above suspicion, for we are all suspects in this  most heinous of crimes.  Let us find those who murdered our fellow so that they may be driven from our number.

People, I think we failed to notice something: 4maskwolf has been acting as a player.

4maskwolf, you have been consistently acting as a player, so why couldn't you be the darkness? You are supposed to be the chief guardian, and guardians are supposed to revive upon death, if I interpreted the flavor-text right. If anyone has the power to prevent that, it's you.

You know what? My curiosity about what happens if the game's owner gets killed is too strong.

"Clearly, the darkness would choose to infect the most influential person here," Guardian Asmoth reasoned slowly. "And that's you, Guardian 4maskwolf. Plus I'm calling dibs on your office once you're dead. I'm sick of the terrible view I have in mine."

[Peradon]

"Deus, surely you dont think the darkness isas powerful as that, to be able to invade 4mask's mind? Nay, you are the corrupt one."

[Deus Asmoth]

"I'd love to hear the reasoning behind your sudden change of heart, Peradon. Why, you were campaigning for Mask's death earlier yourself."

Also, a roleplay mafia game seems like it would be fun.

"Why are we incited to such a rage that we would dispose our leader for all these eons?" Gaurdian Flabort asks. "Have we lost our minds with the loss of Rhaken? Together he and Gaurdian 4maskwolf have led us well. I wouldn't want to think of what we'd do if he were innocent of the crimes you accuse him of and we lose him too."

He slowly unbraids his beard, then declares, "Gaurdian Deus Amoth, GaurdianDeathsword, why are you so quick to accuse him with so little evidence? Just a theory about his neutral stance, and a need to destroy everything that we Guardians have stood dealy for. First our galaxy, now our leaders, then the rest of us."

[Deus Asmoth]

"Why are you so quick to defend him, flabort? This is supposed to be a trial where all must stand to be judged. Why would 4maskwolf be above such questioning? He is the most powerful of all of us, yet he was unable to- or chose not to- prevent Rhaken's death. Why would the darkness not choose the most powerful among us to be its pawn? And most importantly, why have I been stuck with the worst office for all these millennia?"

[Peradon]

"Guardian Deus, I was merely pointing out the fact that everyone must be taken into consideration, and no one should be out of the spotlight. You seem to have taken my words and ran with them claiming the Guardian 4mask has been poisoned by this darkness. Pray, what lead you to that conclusion?"

[origamiscienceguy]

"I suck at roleplaying, I don't know why I thought that that was relevant to the situation, but that is just a fact I know.

"It strikes me as odd that you indicate that this darkness is alive to choose a host, and not a tool used to destroy. Perhaps used by someone who feels unappreciated in their office, or who wants the mantle of leader for themselves. It's true that Guardian 4maskwolf is the strongest of us, but how would such a powerful Guardian be reduced to being a pawn of a higher power? If it is at all a higher power - it seems to me to be the antithesis of the light of creation, a pure destructive force that cannot support the life-force needed to control anything, let alone someone who wields so much light. It would seem to me that one unable to wield much light at all, or one who has lost their light, is more suited to use this darkness.""

Seriously, though. I don't think the darkness is alive, it's more likely some sort of miasma or manifestation in the same way the light that is supposed to revive the Guardians is a manifestation of their own power; while it may be alive after all, I'm inclined to believe it's something one of the players possesses, rather than something that possesses the guardians.
