Is the nation we're in landlocked?
Yes, you are land locked.

I think the idea about standardizing artillery is excellent. However, I think 8mm is a better idea for our smallest caliber, as our current MGs, tanks, and aircraft all use 8mm Mauser.
If you adopt 8mm mauser what are you going to do about all your current guns in 11×60mm Mauser?
Could the mechs crouch? Going into a sort of hull down position?
Yes in theory they can crouch, kneel or lie down.

"...Diesel engine... 500 hp... thousand horse power variant... no other restrictions.."
The committees request echo's in your head and two thing are clear, the first is that the spokes man has never owned anything other than a hose, a thousand was just the first big number that came in to his little head, the balding fool has no idea what a hose power is, hell he'd proably say it was half an ox.

The second thing that hits you is how on earth are you going to make such an engine...

Work on the 500 hp diesel engine plans is rapid, if in doubt to big is the rule of the day.

by the end of the month the first test engine is ready, its a massive slab of machined steel, 230 cm long.
And it need to be with its even 10.5 inch bore and stroke giveing it a displacement of 89.4 litres.

Testing is nerve wracking but by the time tuning finishes it's outputting 503 hose power and nearly 3000 pound-foot of torque.

The 1000 hp engine is much easier, You use two 500 engines to make a horizontally-opposed engine like Benz intended.
With a new crank shaft and crankcase it's soon ready.

(Im pretty sure that bouth engines are far too small and make too much torque, but that's what the calculator says is right, so they might change latter.)

Work on the hand grenade is fairly rapid,  and soon the first test samples are ready.

Its a simple design, just an dodecahedron shaped shell made from cast iron fitted with a pull activated friction fuse.
Spoiler: Mark 1 hand grenade (click to show/hide)

Your numbers are wrong. 10.5 inches square makes 909ci, or 14892cc per cylinder.

You are making a 90 Liter Monster.

What type of material is the mech made of?

Would it be useful to make tank armour out of it?

I am thinking armoured divisions supported by heavy 'infantry' (read: Mechs) instead of being supported by normal infantry.

Removes the need for IFVs and armoured personnel carriers, resources which could be used for other roles, such as AA, AM (anti-missile) and command roles.

Currently your mechs are just made from basic steel, if you want to use them as heavy 'infantry' you'll need some more armour and some kind of weapons.

Put the 500hp engine in the mech, and make necessary adaptions to new powerplant.

Look into developing advanced hydraulics, pneumatics and other articulation.

Possibly look into hydrogas and hydro-pneumatic suspensions.

+1 to development of 8mm machine gun, 20mm Autocannon and 80mm multi-role cannon.

Seriously do you know how much fuel a 80L engine eats? That's a dead end, guys.

Research armor able to deflect small arms fire for the Mech

Adapt the 37mm Gun for Mech use

I'll just do the maths on Brake Specific Fuel Consumption to show just how much fuel it's drinking.
Its BSFC is 310.7 grams per horse power, 310.7 x 503 = 156282 grams of fuel.
Diesel is about 850 grams/litre so that's 183 litres of fuel an hour.

If you want to power a train, a boat, a massive tank or a Zeppelin then its about the right size.

It's certainly not the right engine for a "heavy infantry" mech then. Instead let's adapt the aircraft engine, the 180hp one.

+1 for the 8mm, 20mm, and 80mm guns, as well as adapting the 37 for mech use.

I do need a bit more details, you want a 8 mm machinegun, what are you going to do with it?  hows it going to be cooled? air? water?  what's the feed system? a belt? some kind of magazine or drum?
And 20mm gun, its 20mm times what? it's it going to be an anti tank gun? anti air? or a fast fireing plane/ mech gun?

The 500hp engine is not the one that eats fuel and is 80L.

Thats the 1000hp one.

Alright, how's this:

+1

50KG is very heavy for a medium MG. I mean, the M2 Browning .50cal HMG is only 36kg. And the minigun is only about 39KG.

I's say a target weight would be around the same as other Medium MGs/GPMG's such as the MG3, M60, FN MAG and AA52, all of which were between 9.5-12KG.

As for the 20mm Autocannon, I'd more likely chamber it for 20x120mm. 100mm is a little on the low side. Plus, if you want AP ammo, the more power you have, the better. It would also allow us to fire HE shells further.

Spoiler: "The MK1 SR" (click to show/hide)

+1 I also like the idea of a semi auto rifle.

Its the 30's, and semi auto rifles had already been developed by this time (Farqahar-Hill rifle, a number of Russian guns and some french, US and German guns too. They were actually pretty common projects, but few were economical).

I'd say maybe up the magazine to 15 rounds, though, so we get 16 in total - 15 in the mag and one in the chamber.

EDIT: Just had a thought. Funk, how modifiable is the current Mauser rifle? Could it be turned into a marksmans/sniper rifle? Could it be modified to take magazines and have a side ejector, instead of having a top fed bolt action?

It is using a pretty nice round (although it may be slightly underpowered, but it would still pack a punch). Shame to completely replace it.

The 500hp engine is not the one that eats fuel and is 80L.
The 500hp engine is 89L and the 1000hp one is 178L and neither is economical, there built to move massive loads, all day, up hill.
Big engine take a lot of fuel, even the best German hybrid tanks managed no more than 0.4 mile per gallon and there big English gallons.

Given that it an old large rife, designed to use black powder, so it probably not worth your time to spend the money and time to do much with them.
Still you do have a lot of them, over 80 thousand takeing up space.

I'll start the next up date tomorrow evening, give to you all a chance to finalize things.
