Design bureau of the peoples revolutionary guard. Spring of 1931

Today is the first dayy it your new job, you never intended to set foot in Crohakstan again, but that was before the revolution.
The old  oppressive monarchy is gone and the people have in embrace the new government.

Ok this is a Design game, set in a 1930's not unlike our own.
There's just a few simple rules we all need to follow.

Now thats out of the way lets get on with the game.

The chef minster sent for you personally, it's funny how old favour can be repaid some times.

Holding your briefcase close to your chest you exit the train and carry the secret of X in Crohakstan.     

1) The Mechanical Bipedal Walker.
2) Industrial synthesis of helium 

Entering your office you find two thick folders, labelled Military as of 1929 and Designs as of 1929.

I was thinking of Zeppelins,  fusion reactors don't really scream alternate 1930's.

Yes, but I was hinting at the fact that helium, being an inert gas, can only be created by nuclear fusion/fission.

Anyway, I would go for the mech, since it's existence requires the existence of a high strength/ low weight metal as well as advanced control systems, which in itself will be more beneficial than helium. Hydrogen is after all a superior lifting agent, and not always all that problematic. IIRC, many more airships were lost due storms than due to mid air explosion.

Though, fire did tend to complicate ground fires.

Not really. Airships have advantages and drawbacks compared to planes, while mechs have small and large drawbacks. There is a reason why those were never build.

You'd need to be doing something wrong to end up waist deep in mud. Also, pretty sure mechs will be easier to mass produce.

But yeah, a giant airship burninating the countryside with liberal use of bombs would be quite awesome to see. I just like mechs more.

Opening your briefcase, you pull out your plans for the first Mechanical Bipedal Walker.

Your walker copys the pilots basic movements and uses a system of hydraulic controls to translate them in to movement.
While the powerfull leg joints make any fine moment troublesome, the broad hinged feet proved a stable base.

It clearly need some work before production can begin,  some armaments for a start....

I'm skeptical about the mech.....

It has a tall silhouette.

I mean, its taller than a modern MBT, which are generally roughly twice the size of WW2 tanks.....

And having nuclear fusion would also require very high strength and exotic materials, as well as high tech control systems.

But anyway.

I propose we develop a new standard of artillery, support and mountable weapons.

The following should be developed:

A 7.5mm Gatling/rotary cannon
A 15mm Gatling/rotary cannon
A 20mm autocannon
A 40mm autocannon
A 60mm AT/Field/Indirect Fire gun
A 80mm AT/AA/Field/Indirect Fire gun
A 100mm AT/AA/Field/Indirect Fire gun
A 120mm AT/AA/Field/Indirect Fire gun
A 140mm Field/Indirect Fire gun
And finally, a 160mm Howitzer.

I am not suggesting all at once, but standardised, all-bases-covered weapons such as these could cover up for a long time and give us decent small/medium naval, AA, AT and vehicle weapons. As well as decent artillery.

On a more immediate note, I suggest we develop 500hp and 1000hp diesel engines

If wikipedia is to be trusted, the Leclerc (modern French tank) is 2.53 meters tall, the M1 Abrams is 2.44. To contrast, the M4 Sherman of WWII is 2.74 meters, and the Panzer IV is 2.68. So, for this walker at least I don't think we need to worry about silhouette height.

I think the idea about standardizing artillery is excellent. However, I think 8mm is a better idea for our smallest caliber, as our current MGs, tanks, and aircraft all use 8mm Mauser. While I realize this is all based on the MG08 anyway, I think we might as well do this so we can continue to supply units equipped with older equipment. Also, I think we should start with 8mm, 20mm, and 80mm guns, then move into the other calibers.

+1 to engine suggestion.

Is the nation we're in landlocked?

I propose the development of a general-use hand grenade for our infantry

I feel the mech is more suited for infantry support. For example, acting as a manpod for the 37mm.
