LINEQUEST: A peasant elf Line Land attempt
« on: March 15, 2015, 12:31:01 am »

(Not paying attention to what keys I was pressing somehow led me to start my Line Land attempt as a Peasant elf instead of a Hero human.... I thought of maybe starting over but I was like "hey, maybe there's some !!FUN!! to be had in this" xD We'll see how far this lil scrub manages to get.)

For just about as long as we can remember, we've felt out of place here. We don't belong here, sitting in trees all day.... The two of us agree, we were born for bigger things. Starting today, we're gonna prove it.

If we can help it, today will be our last day living like elves. We've even chosen new names to mark the occasion! We don't really know what dwarven or human names are like, to be honest..... The ones we chose sound pretty non-elven though, right? Kasten and Pard are good names, I think!

We leave quickly and without a word to the great tree or our neighbors. They wouldn't understand.... It's just us and our map, now. We've been thinking and we have our route planned out. To prove our worth as non-elves, we've decided to travel the entirety of Line World together. We'll move westward, maybe visit some forts or towns before hitting the sea. When we reach the edge, it's back east until we reach the Mountains. If we can defeat them, our true worth will be proven!

We haven't traveled too far when we notice a fox. One thing we could never do as elves is kill animals....

 Maybe...!

Die, you little bastard!! Haha, not too shabby! Pard and I will be eating good tonight!

I butcher the thing and check up on Pard. What we just did might be sort of heavy on him, he always was a little more elf-y than me...

....Or maybe not? He's more concerned about the rain than the animal he just murdered. Hardcore.

The two of us move through the forests until we find...whatever these are. They don't look natural.... Dirt roads?

We start to follow one of the trails. These are definitely roads, we're sure.... But where do they lead?

As the road winds on the weather starts getting worse. If Pard was annoyed with the bit of rain we had earlier, he's really ticked now!

The road passes by a small mound of earth. Doesn't seem too--wait. Is that a door?

Uh.... Hello there.

Dwarves! Real, actual dwarves! The strongest, bravest race in the world, the embodiment of everything Pard and I want to be!I nervously say hello to the one in front of me, and he introduces himself as Rith Subtleurn. Rith...even their names are strong!

So nervous right now.... Pard and I engage in some small talk with them to try and melt the ice....

The weather's still bad out there, so after a bit I ask if the two of us can stay the night. They say it's okay! I'm so relieved, dwarves aren't known for liking elves very much.

As the rain carries on, we have a nice chat with the mound dwarves. They seem a lot more hospitable than the stories the other elves told us. They're a warm bunch, when you get to know them a little. Sitting with them I know the two of us made the right choice in leaving the elves--I don't think I've ever felt more at home than right now, and I'm sure Pard feels the same.

When the rain lets up some, Pard and I head back out into the wilderness, "the Jungle of Lulls," the dwarves called it. We'll try to do some hunting and training, then head back to our new friends to spend the night.

Hrrmmmmm.... We find some deer and a flock of emus later on, but we leave them all alone. They're too big, and their groups have too many close together...we're looking for something to train on, not get killed by.

Helloooooo~

The two of us use the little bugger as our punching bag for a while. Pard eventually ruins it by caving its head in by accident.... It's okay though, we got a little practice in before it died, at least. As our hunt continues, we find a couple other foxes and handle them the same way. We'll have to make a note of this, they seem to be really good for training on.

We return to the mound for a lunch of fox meat and rainwater. I ask Pard if he can wait here while I head out this time; he's a big help, but he doesn't have enough finesse to keep an animal alive to train on....

I push alone into the jungle, with more speed than before. I have to keep an eye on the skies--I do not want to be caught alone with the sun down.

I keep moving, following my nose, when I take in a scent that makes me freeze.

Human?

My nose can't be wrong, I'm sure. Can it? But why would there a human out here, in between dwarf and elf lands? Unless....

Our map says there's a necromancer's tower not too far to the west of the dwarves' village. But this is too far for one of those types to travel from their tower alone.... Isn't it?

I hurry back the way I came, not stopping until I reach our new friends' mound.

As the sounds of the dwarves' cheery talking reach my ears, the small scare is already vanishing from my mind. It's been a long first day, and overall a good one, I'd say! Pard and I have a small dinner of fox meat and find ourselves some space on the ground to get some well-deserved rest.

I make sure to doublecheck the mound's door lock before I sleep, though....

A pesant? Your dead. I can't even last long as a demigod
(I'm not dead Imma make this work somehow, okay  >:C
....hopefully xD)

(I'll hopefully train up Striker, Dodger, Wrestler, Spearman, any of the fighting things that I can train with relative safety. I'll try to train Swimmer without drowning as well, if I can get up to like Novice Swimmer I can do some swim training to up this scrub's Strength, Agility, Toughness and Endurance. As for armor.... I got this leather gear but it'll probably not stand up to much. On my journey west I'll try to stop by a human keep or mead hall and get some stuff from there, probably. This is considering I don't die pathetically along the way, of course xD)

You realize you cant get armor from keeps or mead halls, you are an elf, not a human. Human armor doesnt fit you. Dwarven does though. Dwarf Fortresses or adventerures with armor can be sources. Trading is overpowered with infinite money in the form of rocks. As an advantage, you can get steel as an elf.

I get up before the sun rises and nudge Pard awake. Our breakfast is a few of the plump helmets our dwarven friends gave us. We'll be starting early today. What I have planned may take a while.

We head a small ways north, just outside of the dwarven hills. Just where I thought it'd be...a river. I tell Pard to stay back....

And plunge in!!

For what feels like hours I fall into a rhythm of brushes with death, jumping into the river again and again and struggling back to the shore. It's a dangerous tactic but it's the only way I'm going to learn how to swim.... And after one last floundering leap back to land, it feels like it's paid off!

Now the real training can start. After a quick break to catch my breath, I climb on top of the bridge.

I dive in and start to swim under the bridge!

When I finally break for a snack I've come within seconds of drowning at least five times. I can't quit though, not now. I'm finally getting the hang of it all, swimming, this bridge training technique.... Just a few more reps is all I need!

A few more reps turn into a few more which turn into a few more.... I finally get out for the day around noon.

I ask Pard how he's doing and get a spiel about how good it is to be friends.... He does this sometimes to guilt trip me. I guess I worried him some with all that flailing....

To try and cheer him up, I've decided we'll go hunting some more with the rest of the dayllight we have left.

Aaaaand he's still pissy....

We keep searching and--damn!

That smell again, stronger than before!

I try to keep hidden and test the air. The breeze is coming from the east.... Whoever's out there must be in that direction. This is not going to be a recurring thing, dammit! I get low and move eastward, Pard close behind.

As quickly as it's noticed, though, the scent's gone, masked by the regular smells of the forest. What is going on out here...?

We shift our search south, avoiding anywhere we smell humans at. Eventually we take down and butcher a coati. Not a big catch, but it'll make for a nice dinner.

The sun's setting fast. We make our way back to the mound without incident, get settled quickly and are telling our friends about the day's events before the moon's risen. Thob, the town's bone doctor, is surprised to hear about my morning training. He demands I let him check me out!

He admonishes me for going into the training like a dwarf instead of easing into it. I could've died, he says...pshhh. Still, his analysis eventually agrees with what I'd thought I'd felt earlier--I'm definitely much tougher and my endurance has increased as well.

Pard and I eat a dinner of coati meat and water before bedding down for the night. He's still pretty uptight, especially after Thob confirming how dangerous my little training was.... I try to assure him that my next training strategy won't be nearly as scary.

....Probably.

(Ooh, didn't know that.... The elf description calls them medium-sized, I thought they'd be able to fit human stuff D:  I guess I'll be stopping at a fortress instead of a keep, then.)

We're up early again. We'll be spending all day today hunting, if we can. The next step in my training regimen starts today.

Rocks. Lots and lots of rocks. Pard and I head down into the desert lands south of the village and start knapping like there's no tomorrow. Thob tells me it'll help with my fighting senses, somehow.... He was right about the swimming thing, so I trust that this'll somehow work, too.

It's boring and tiring, but the results are worth it! I feel a little stronger, and I really do feel a little more in tune with myself.

The day's task done, the two of us return to the forest for some hunting. We find and start beating on a small flock of kea.

Haha, dropped easily! We're getting pretty good at this, eh Pard--

Pard?!

We rush back to the safety of the dwarven village before the situation gets worse! How could I let this happen, all those injuries...!

Oh, thank goodness.... It wasn't as bad as I thought, he just got bruised up a lot. A little rest and he's already looking a lot better.

We head over to the river to eat and cool down after that scare. Pard seems to be taking it well, but he doesn't want to go hunting again today.... We'll just take a walk and call it a day, I think.

We walked across the bridge and up north, toward a nearby dwarven village. Along the way, we met a dwarf looking for work, Muthkat. We asked him if he wanted to join us, and he agreed! He looks like he can use that axe he carries, I'm sure he'll be a great addition to our quest!

Dinner by the river was water and plump helmets. We'll be returning to the mound for the night, now. I've been making good progress in a pretty short period of time; I think if hunting goes well these next few days, our journey west can begin by the start of next week!

im not sure but I think the "medium size" is only talkig about how tall they are, there frame might be to thin to wear human armor....but then again wouldet dwarven armor be harder to wear?

This thread is awesome  :D   I admire your thoroughness, I try to keep adventurer journals sometimes but I just can't find the patience and effort for storytelling. Really enjoying reading it.

the fact that it actually says "medium size" makes me suspect that it still wouldn't fit, because if something can fit your body type it doesn't specify a size. but I guess you might as well try it to find out for sure.

I routinely play elven adventures. Human armor does not fit elves. Dwarven armor does. I think the "medium sized creature" thing means its like much bigger than, say, a dog, but not even close to the size of a dragon. Goblin armor would also fit. Elves, dwarves, and goblins are all of a 60,000 size. Humans are 70,000. Kobalds are like 20,000.

We set out early for the jungle. We'll be hunting for most of the day, if we can.

We find a few kea, perfect to train some wrestling on--oh, geeze.

Oh, gods.... Uh.... Good job, Muthkat?

We make a quick stop back at the mound and tell the dwarf it's probably best if we do the hunting by ourselves....

http://i.imgur.com/STKTGCd.png
We find a flock of kea and go to town on one of them! Pard's in great form today, using a lot more control over his attacks than before. We've been able to use this same bird for a lot of wrestling training so far. Now if I can only teach him something about pacing himself.... Passing out in the middle of a fight's no good.

We train step after step, over and over practically nonstop, until I nearly pass out too. I think it's a good point to take a break....

And to look over myself for a moment.

In just a few days since leaving the elf home behind, I've accomplished so much! The curious training methods of the dwarves have worked fast and they've worked well. I've never felt this strong, or this ready to fight before. Pard's been right by my side through most of the training, especially all this hunting, so I have to guess he's probably improved in much the same way. This just proves it, I *knew* we were meant for something greater than singing to trees! Our potential is so great, and we've only scratched the surface, I know.

I think my hand-to-hand skills have improved enough to start off with. I take out my spear--learning to use this thing will be my next task. Knowing how wild Pard gets when things are lethal, this may take a while....

Now that we're not limited to just our hands, we feel safe going after slightly bigger game. We find and whale on a pair of emus. Pard gets a little...enthusiastic.

As the day goes on we go after more and more emus. One particularly scary moment happens when I try to throw my spear to catch one.... The spear lodged in the thing and it took off running! It was a hard chase but eventually I caught up to it, snatched my weapon back and ended it.

When we finally take a rest for a late lunch by the river, we've killed at least ten emus and even a few deer and a moose, but I still feel like I'm only a Novice at using this spear.... I'll have to keep at it!

A few more slain deer and we call it a day. Learning to use spear well is a lot more difficult than the wrestling was.... If I'm going to be this slow at mastering it, preparation for our journey might take a little longer than I thought....

(Ahhhh, I see. Thanks for the info :P)

Kobolds are small, dwarves, elves, and goblins are medium, and humans are large.
