Ssyrith's eye twitched quickly as he saw the Preston army arrayed in its marching formation. "Of course they'd be too slow, of bloody course they're too slow." He quickly brought his claws up to his head and sighed, "well at least they're in marching formation, hopefully they'll be able to use that." A small part of him almost wished he was up with the commanders, instead of back here with the caravan, then he might be able to make sure they didn't mess up their end of the job. That desire was quickly crushed by the rest of his desire to keep himself away from the firing lines and his scales attached to his flesh.

Ambros smiled; a near-perfect ambush! A quick barrage on the enemy artillery followed up by a forward advance; a few casualties here and there but Her Majesty's army were far better shots than the enemy mercenaries. If any tried to escape along the road, the Jarl would deal with them in the way his kind knew all too well.

"I would recommend an artillery barrage on the enemy's own cannons before they have time to direct them against our soldiery. With some prayers and my personal presence, their artillery will be reduced to pipes and dreams...I of course will follow your commands as you give them."

Erika lowered her binoculars and made some mental calculations.  She closed her eyes, gritted her teeth and thought a silent prayer to her brother, wherever the Cycle had sent his spirit now.  Sigurd, what do I do?  You're the one who should be doing this.  Erika sighed, opened her eyes and turned to the rest of her command.

"Right.  Correct me if I'm wrong.  Militia; borderline useless, but will survive longer as ranged support.  Pikes; melee, but armour will help survive the charge.  Line; ranged, keep out of melee full stop.  Artillery; definitely ranged.  Dragoons; ranged, but your armour helps and your mobility will be essential.  Raiders; definitely melee, and you're armoured to survive the charge.  Alright, then.  Here's the plan."

Erika nodded in turn to Flavia, the Eel, Ambrose, Alistair and the Abbess.  "General, you'll be heading the dragoons.  Jarl, I expect you'll be most comfortable with your men.  Ambrose, the artillery are your children, tend to them with your fatherly, murderous care.  Harroway, you're heading up the pikes.  Abbess, tend to your hospitaliers.  You're best at range, your sisters are more useful to me as healers than front line fighters.  I'll be leading the line infantry, taking the left-most regiment where I can best keep track of the immediate field and command the militia as well."

Erika gestured to the field, drawing lines with her hand across the edge of the hollow.

"Pikemen and Raiders are to form a battle line just in front of the line infantry and militiamen, who are to form a rear line on the crest of the hills and hold position; militia to the left, line to the right, pike before militia, raiders before line.  If the Prestoners advance, which is their best bet, we will have four minutes before they are in firing range, by which point the main melee force should be mostly in place.  Once the enemy are within range to fire on the melee line, the melee force should charge to make contact with the Prestoners.  As this happens, the ranged line should step forward into firing range, if they are not already in it, and provide covering fire.  Musketmen should pick targets of opportunity - whatever is easiest to hit, hit.  If two regiments can hit the same unit, they should concentrate fire rather than spreading it out - the melee units will hold the enemy forces in place.  Raiders and pikes should pick   Once the melee troops are in position, continue firing until the enemy line breaks."

Erika nodded to Flavia.

"Dragoons will have a harsher task.  They are to take a route in front of the melee line as it forms, screening them and taking any opportunity shots they can against Prestoners, especially if they can concentrate fire or shoot without being shot at.  They will get shot at at points.  If the artillery manage their work, there may well be a hole in the Prestoner line, through which the dragoons can thread the needle of their forces.  If not, the line may be short enough to circle around.  If not, Jarl, leave enough space between the line infantry and your men for the dragoons to thread through, and create a hole in the line for them to pass into.  Once you've circled around, either way, I want the dragoons to keep at range and take the enemy from the rear.  Range, find weak spots in the line, focus and do as much demoralising damage as you can.  If you get trapped in melee, pull out.  You have enough armour to survive an encounter with their troops, but not enough for a prolonged bout.

"Now, if the enemy don't advance, do exactly the same but advance once the lines are intact.  Dragoons, take a more luxurious path around and get into a favourable position."

Erika gestured to the Korlanese nobleman.

"While this is all going on, Hoffenburg is going to be blasting the field like a madman.  Take out the enemy artillery first and foremost.  Keep our artillery in position, fire on theirs.  You have at most two minutes before they can move their artillery into position to counter-strike.  Make them count.  If you can't take them out in two minutes, keep blasting at them; and dragoons, you are to focus on hitting their artillery if possible.  Give Ambrose every edge he can get, but again keep out of melee.  With luck, Norn has stirred up enough sentiment to assist with taking down their artillery.  Once their firepower is down, take targets of opportunity, hit them where you think it will do the most damage.  Prioritise their leadership, if possible.

"Additionally, I defer to your experience, Hoffenburg.  If you can see flaws in this plan and have corrections, tell me now, and if you see opportunities during the battle, take them and give the order - your commands will supercede these ones if given.  You'll have the best overview of the field, so runners will be reporting to your position.  I'm going to be leading the line troops, so I won't be in the best place."
Erika allowed herself a grin.  "I'm putting my faith in you, Ambrose.  Make me proud.

"Now, unless anyone has pertinent objections, you have your orders.  May the gods be with each and every one of us, and the Spirit Returned guide our shots."

Erika will lead the line infantry from the left most regiment, commanding the militia as well.  Where possible, she will attempt to snipe enemy commanders and captains within range.

Orders:  Form a rear line of militia and line infantry, with a protective pike-raider line in front.

Dragoons to circle around the front of the melee line, taking shots of opportunity and making their way around or in between the Prestoner lines to get to their rear, then take targets of opportunity.

Artillery is to take out enemy artillery, then targets of opportunity.

Melee troops to engage enemy once Prestoners in firing range.  Line troops to fire on enemy as soon as possible, or to step forward into range if not able when melee troops engage.  Use height advantages where possible.

Ambros nodded. "The plan is solid, although the tides of battle do have a habit of changing; I shall do as needed..."

Ambros paused, surveying the rebel army before him. They'd die for their Princess, even more so with her leading them on.

"Princess, I doubt I can stop you from fighting, but try not to lose too much blood; quite hard to find blood blood you know. Now I best greet the Prestoners in the way of my people."

Bowing as he left, Ambros almost skipped to the cannons. As worried as he was about the Princess, about the battle, about the chaos that would soon be upon them, what he wanted most was to once more be in command...especially the feeling of a good artillery barrage.

Two artillery batteries had been gathered; each manned by skilled engineers ready to obey him. Shells were placed nearby as ordered; labourers at the ready to reload for the next volley. All the drills and classes these warriors of the cannon would soon be put to the test. It was almost like Korlan again.

Ambros would make no speech; he pointed towards the lumbering Prestoner artillery and gestured the cannons to fire. "By God, the Princess and a free Elbreth, all cannons fire on those of Preston!"

Personally take charge of the artillery and order them to fire on the Prestoner artillery. Should that succeed, focus the artillery on dividing the Preston forces with well-placed bombardments.

Flavia listens to the battle plan and after being given her role, she nods.

"As you wish, Your Highness. The dragoons are ready to get in and get cutting."

As she says that, she gets on her horse and rides away towards the waiting cavalry.

Alistair hated pikes. He hated commanding melee in general; that was a job for people who liked getting killed. However, when the Queen commanded, her servants obeyed, and so there he was, staring at a few hundred pikemen who were looking right back at him. He was on foot and they were too, so he had to wait for someone to bring a barrel on which he could stand before talking. Before the first word was uttered, he was a man in a bad mood with no particular desire to lead; as soon as he started speaking, that man was replaced by a leader of men who evidently had the intention to fight by their sides and die if he must.

Harroway was good at talking.

"Gentlemen, we have the Princess' orders. We've been tasked with forming a line and defending the militias behind us whatever the cost. In simple terms, that means we're on babysitting duty." He looked through the ranks, his gaze stopping occasionally on specific men, evaluating their morale. "Our flank will be weaker than the right, and more prone to get attacked from the sides. The fighting will be at the thickest here, and the battle will be at its most dangerous here... Which is why they sent you, and me. You've got the army's only battle mage supporting you today, boys, and I've got the toughest bastards this side Brighthall to watch my back.

I will not ask you to die for your queen, or for your country. I will ask you to fight for it. Fight until no Prestoner is left alive. Fight until no occupier remains standing on our soil, desecrating our land. That is what I would ask of you. If it's too much, if one of you is feeling a little tired or maybe has a goddamn tummy ache and doesn't feel up to killing the whoresons waiting for us on the other side of the field, you're welcome to wait at the back. The men will be here, liberating their country."

He nodded with a confident smile and changed his tone immediately after, becoming much more formal.

"But before liberating anything, we'll have to FORM A LINE. In formation, men!"

He got off his barrel, and went to find a horse. He'd need to stay mobile.

Give the pikemen a speech to boost their morale. Organize them in formation as per the Princess' orders, carry out her commands during the battle. When not immediately needed, hang back from the troops (to prevent collateral damage) and send fireballs across the field, targeting (in order of preference) the general if he becomes visible, officers that can be seen on the field, and infantry marching towards the pikemen's positions. Do not shoot on troops engaged in melee combat with my own.

Find the highest ranked soldier amongst the pikemen. Tell him to take command if something happens to me.

The Abbess took her place at the rear of the Sister Knights, her orderly already having strapped a breastplate on her and set a helmet firmly on her head. She checked her musket was loaded.

"Long has our nation suffered! Overwhelmed with heresies and evil men, the Cycle was trampled and spat on. We started as women of peace, who could stand the evil no longer - we tended the wounds of those who fought for our sake, and when they could fight no longer, we took up the gun!

However, the Princess has decided our hands of mercy are more valuable than our fists of wrath! We will be following behind the main force, offering firing support when we can! Today we do God's will, Sister-Knights!

Sistersssss.... move!"

Lagging behind the main lines, provide fire support where possible but stay out of the way of the main combat.

Spoiler:  Sheepy Hollow (click to show/hide)

First Battle for Sheepy Hollow

Spoiler:  Rolls (click to show/hide)

The Mercenaries are unaware of the approaching Elbrethians, until the first artillery shells come pounding down on Sheepy Hollow. Screams echo from the Town Streets as an entire battery of Artillery is blown apart, the gunpowder igniting and setting one of the town houses on fire.

Panicked Mercenaries quickly fall into order and begin to march towards the Elbrethians who themselves are getting into orderly positions.

None of them expected the heavy barrage that would follow. While the Artillery truly is shooting as if there would be no tomorrow, the suprise is the Revolutionary Harroway, who with the flick of his two hands causes a Firestorm of unbelievable proportions.

The Prestonian men are vanquished under a barrage of artillery grade fireballs which rip apart their lines, one regiment seems to simmer for a moment before each and everone of them explodes showering the surrounding units in what seems to be burning shrapnel, which kills even more men.

Panicked Soldiers run for their lives, the others also retreating more carefully into the questionable security of the town proper. However a single Regiment dazed, confused and sullen decides to continue its assault.

It soon learns to feel the Power of the Elbreth Artillery.
Finished with this horrendous barrage, you seize fire deciding what to do now. You could continue your barrage but the civilians might be hit too.

Erika stared at the devastation wrought before her.  A full ten seconds of screaming and the stench of burning meat passed before she snapped back to the world.  Right.  Flavia I can't reach with a runner, but the drummers should be able to manage a simple message.  Norn is in danger of losing his men, now that I can see them, but he's about to engage with the Factor's regiment, by the fancy officer's uniforms.  Hopefully the drums can signal him as well.  Either way, perfect bait.  Harroway is a wizard?  Sigurd's spirit!  Thought he was just good with bombs.  Right, time to limit collateral damage.  She signalled some runners.

"Marson.  Run this message to the flagmen and drummers, this is for the dragoons.  Fire on the separated regiment on the right flank.  Surround.  Capture.

"Hallen.  Get a set of the flagmen to signal to that isolated militia unit down there; Retreat east, do not engage.

"Parley.  Give Hoffenburg this message directly; 'Cease fire on urban targets.  Walk your shots fifty paces ahead of the routing regiments, get them to turn around and potentially surrender.  If it looks like they are going to get out of range without surrendering, eliminate them.  If they demand quarter, cease fire.'"  Can't have messengers getting to the enemy.

"Ipswich.  Get a message to Harroway.  Cease fire with the magic.  Wait, no.  Cease fire with the magic on urban targets.  See if he can put a wall of flame ahead of the routing units on the western flank, get them to halt surrender.  He is not, I repeat not, to cast to kill.  We want prisoners.  Additionally, inform him that we'll be splitting off the left flank and moving around to encircle the enemy.  Hold position just outside enemy firing range, then demand their surrender.  If they give it, give quarter.  If not, move in and engage with melee and ranged as before.  Then give them a second chance to surrender.  If they take it, give quarter.  The right flank will do the same.

"Fallow, Marrham.  Go to the Eel and the Abbess, inform them that their right flank will be splitting off, retaining tercio form, and moving east to encircle the enemy.  Hold position just outside enemy firing range, then demand their surrender.  If they give it, give quarter.  If not, move in and engage with melee and ranged as before.  Then give them a second chance to surrender.  If they take it, give quarter.  The left flank will do the same.  Inform the Abbess that she is in charge of the right flank's line infantry."

After finishing her orders, Erika glanced over to the flags and drummers, both sending out commands in military code.  Two different messages were being sent.  They repeated several times as the armies marched.

Cavalry - Fire On - Lone - Infantry - Right Flank - Surround - Capture - End

Lone - Right Flank - Infantry - Retreat - East - Do Not Engage - End

She turned to give orders to her own men as well.

Erika splits off her regiment with the militia, becoming a separate left flank.

The right flank line infantry come under the Abbess' command.

Order: Left flank melee, separate with left flank ranged at rear, encircle enemy from west.

Order: Right flank melee and ranged, separate maintaining order, encircle enemy from east.

Order: Both flanks remain out of firing range before offering surrender.  If surrender not taken, close and engage.  Accept any requests for quarter.

Order: Harroway to produce flame wall, discourage left flank retreat.

Order: Harroway command left flank melee.  Jawl command right flank melee.

Order: Hoffenburg to walk artillery shots, again discourage enemy flight, encourage surrender.  Eliminate if likely to leave artillery range.

Light of the earth, what weapon is this?

The night echoed with the oppressive thunder of artillery and screams carried on the wind. He could see no more walls of fire sweeping across the mercenary ranks, but ragged pillars of black smoke rose from the south edge of town. A fire like this could get out of control, fast. He hoped the Princess would send men to help contain it, or the Hollow would soon be a plain of ash. Over the rooftops, he could see movements of entire formations of soldiers, slow and indomitable, like waves breaking upon the rocks. The deliberate, deep beats of Elbrethian drums clashed with the frantic retreat signals of the enemy. It looked like pure chaos, to him, but he could just tell they'd won the day. Now was just the matter of making sure his men survived it as well...

Anate climbed down from his vantage point, giving the gathered militia a nod of encouragement. He could see fear in their eyes. Pent-up energy filled the air. They'd not seen action yet, but they'd see vengeance done upon their oppressors before the day was done.

'We move east and form our defense in the streets! You are fighting for your homes, sons of Elbreth! Fear not this mercenary scum! They fight for petty greed, and the greed of men will never triumph over the fires of liberty! Form up!'

---
Head east along the streets. If the enemy follow, take defense positions at the end of the road. If the enemy don't take the bait, pursue them, trying to tie them up in combat for long enough for reinforcements to arrive.

Inspire my troops to fight harder for LIBERTY and VENGEANCE.

The Abbess listened to the messenger, pulse pounding. For her first battle, it seemed it'd be easier than she thought - so far she wasn't sure they'd lost a man. Still, sorcery was potent... a wicked tool, perhaps, but maybe it could be bent to serve greater purposes. Still, she was secretly glad she wasn't facing that.

"Soldiers! Sisters! Listen well! We are to flank the enemy, and demand their surrender or their lives! In the name of the Princess, march! Sisters, the fifth hymn of battle!"

As they began to march, the sisters opened their mouths, and began to sing a song of battle and victory. The Abbess smiled as she heard the words.

Head north- east until we're in a position to flank the enemy, then head north.
As we reach just outside firing range, demand their surrender. If they refuse, attack - melee goes first with ranged troops providing firing support.

There is a certain melody to be found in the screams of burning foes. For a man who was lord over fire, Alistair felt relatively calm. The flames are beautiful too, in their own way. I had forgotten the pleasure of working true magic.

The spell had been far more powerful than he had anticipated, but in the end the result had gone in his favor. Now he watched, waiting, recovering his strength. The men were largely silent around him, either in awe or terrified, and they were not standing close. He did not care. In that moment he was infinite, and their worries were no of no concern to him.

The Princess' messenger shook him from his trance, and he reluctantly turned away from the flames. He listened to the orders carefully, a frown slowly forming.

"I'm to avoid casting to kill? What does Her Highness think pyromancy is for?" He shook his head. "Back to headquarters, soldier. Tell the Princess it will be an honor to give her her first victory."

He turned around and started shouting orders.

Move to a safe distance from my own troops in case of spellcasting failure and put up a flame wall to cut off the enemy's retreat, if that is possible. Although the official stance is to "not cast to kill", a few dozens or hundreds of enemy soldiers lost to the flames won't cause too much mourning.

Once it is done, offer the enemy the chance to surrender. If they refuse, order the troops to march in and clean them up, leading them but avoiding if possible to personally join the melee. If they accept, they're to throw down all arms and begin fighting the flames in the city as soon as fighting has ended everywhere else.

Spoiler:  Sheepy Hollow (click to show/hide)

First Battle for Sheepy Hollow

Spoiler:  Rolls (click to show/hide)

The Militia forms up under the command of Norn and charges wildly roaring the Mercenaries who were just trying to retreat from the church compound. A bloody melee erupts among the local graveyard and even in the church itself. It becomes quickly clear that the Militia is in no way a serious threat to the mercenaries as it gets torn apart left and right. Like a daemon out of a Weylandish Nursery Tale Meredith Reed is among the Militia butchering them by the dozen. Anate himself is hardpressed to hold himself against the far more skilled mercenaries and he and his men are slowly forced to retreat, finally after only small clots of Militiamen are left, Anate falls and the Militiamen break. A few with the presence of mind drag their broken leader from the carnage as they retreat outside of the town. Meanwhile Meredith and her Guard move further north to meet up with her remaining men who have begun an Ordered Retreat.

On the other side of the town things look entirely different. Alistair uses more of his awesome power to conjure up a massive wall of flames in front of the retreating left wing of the Mercenaries. Cut off from retreat and at the prospect to be ridden down by the quickly approaching cavalry, they drop their weapons and surrender.

The Day is won. THe question is whether the Queen would like to hound the remaining Mercenaries further or not.

The Prestonian Forces are in a full retreat.
Anate Norn has suffered grievous injuries and will suffer -2 to any physical exertion until his Recovery.
