June 720a - Castle Crashers

Take a high position with the artilerry and blast open the gates and away part of the walls around the gates of Castle Black, assemble the troops at a safe distance and then send Norn as a truce negotiator.

The people in the castle did not know or expect the sudden thunder and fire that visited them in the morning day after the hidden arrival of the Elbrethian princess.

The early hours of the day that usually would be spent on breakfasts, repairs and some light muster were interrupted by a distant booming and the subsequent explosions that rocked the front gate.
Castle Black, for all of its formidable monastic glory, could not withstand the velocity of the cannon balls or the explosive force of bombs thrown by mortars. A total panic swallowed up the garrison but the bombardment was short lived.

Through the destroyed gate the Preston soldiers could see the forming ranks of Elbreth and in a rush armed themselves to prepare for a fight. as the formations became more clear however, their enthusiasm fell, as they stood in firing lines and manned the rubble of the gate. They stood at the ready, awaiting Elbrethian move. A part of the soldiers rushed off somewhere however, and the visible force seemed to be only a quarter of what Elbrethians were fielding.

Ambros peered at the lackluster garrison with his looking-glass, smiling.

"Those won't be all they have, your grace. See those soldiers running off? They'll try to prepare their artillery or send messages to more of Preston's mercenaries. Best we attack quickly while we have the initiative; a bombardment of their defending force would be suitable I believe."

Ambros switched his observation to the mage. "I truly doubt my fellow advisor will be able to force a surrender. These mercenaries would have done so by now if they didn't think they had a chance of winning.

Erika nodded.  "Agreed.  Flavia, take the dragoons and run down the fleeing force before they can send messages or prepare artillery.  I still want an effort made at negotiation, however.  Norn, I want you to ride there as quick as you can and offer them generous surrender terms - they have two minutes to choose whether they are willing to negotiate.  If they don't agree by two minutes, ride back because Hoffenburg is going to shell their position for sixty seconds straight before the Jarl and I advance as a tercio - Waylanders at the front, line infantry behind.  We have limited space to attack them, so best we use our strongest troops off the bat and keep the militia and pikemen as reserve, filtering them in as needed to fill the gaps.  Once the shelling stops, we'll attack.  Any questions?"

Ride down the fleeing group with the cavalry (if possible), send Norn to attempt to open negotiations - they have two minutes to accept a ceasefire and negotiate their surrender.  If they don't, shell their position for sixty seconds and then advance the strongest troops (Weylanders and Line Infantry) as a tercio, as wide as the castle entrance permits.  Cycle in weaker troops to replace the wounded.

The Siege of Castle Black
[/u][/b][/size]

Castle Black is an ancient little Fortress. While not large it has been built strong and as such it provides at least moderate Defenses (3 Levels of Defense) against Enemy Artillery. Its only entrance is the gates you blasted to rubble and allows direct combat between one unit against one other unit should it come to melee. Of course one could try and climb the walls but that requires more siege equipment than cannons.

Beyond this the Elbrethians have taken up position just outside artillery range, to approach however they will allow the enemy at least two salvoes before an approach to the gates can be forced and even then the attackers will suffer under artillery barrages until they can get inside.

Spoiler:  Rolls (click to show/hide)

As Elberethian Artillery moves forward to shell the ancient castle, they find themselves face to face with an 24 pounder suprise. While the Elberethian Artillerists do great work it avails them nothing against the strong walls and the just as precise Prestonian counterparts. In the heated artillery exchange both batteries are destroyed. General Hoffenburg and a few cannoneers barely escape with singed uniforms and faces stained with soot. Cheering goes up from inside the Castle. Clearly those guys are eager for you to meet not only their shells but also their canister shot.

Erika watched the exchange with a grim expression.  Still, artillery duels preserved the lives of the footsoldiers.  Right then.  Erika shifted into General Queen mode.

"Jarl Halfdan, you and I are leading the attack!  Take your best raiders and charge the gates, we are punching through.  I will be behind you with at least three regiments of line infantry - tercio up, and we will concentrate our fire on the regiment you're fighting.  Hoffenburg, take command of the rest of the army and get them to take cover - reinforce our position with the reserves as soon as any regiments are too depleted to continue fighting.  Harroway, be selective with your flames and annihilate the police regiment behind the one we're fighting, then hold off on further strikes.  We need to minimise collateral."

"Priority is the enemy artillery!  Capture, do not destroy, we have teams who can work them!"

Lead the attack with the Eel (Eel with Raiders, Erika with Line).  Take the chokepoint with a unit of Raiders, put 3 Line Infantry behind them and concentrate all fire on the Police unit holding the chokepoint.  If and when we break through, capture the Prestonian artillery.

If the Abbess is willing, her Knights can take part in the assault - her discretion.

Hoffenburg is to get the remaining units to take cover and filter in reinforcements from the Lines and Raiders whenever a unit is taken to half strength by bombardment.

Harroway is to blast the Police unit not holding the chokepoint, and only while they are not holding the chokepoint.  The artillery units are to be left untouched.

Flavia observed the affair from the side, letting Erika give orders and make the castle her target.
She could not look at it for too long though, for she strode over towards her and leaned in with a quiet word. It was not her place to challenge her openly, but give advice where needed.

"Your highness, if I may say, this is not going as well as it should. We could have avoided Castle Black and march straight for Sheepstead, that would make for a more swift advance, but I cannot say that withdrawing now would be good, seeing how this lot will give news of your presence here."

She sighed and looked as the men started making their advance towards the castle. All of them marched bravely, full of faith and fervor. Fervor which could be guided anywhere, for as long as it could be sustained.

"Let's hope that the castle will be worth it, because we have done scarcely any scouting around the place..."

Erika stared at Flavia for a moment and nodded minutely.

"I make mistakes," she admitted quietly. "But you are right, now that we are here we must capture this.  I am here only for the supplies to succour Sheepy Hollow, and to confuse the enemy.  Once we are done here, we will march on Sheepstead.  Do not hesitate to advise me on that, please."  Erika gave a wan smile and holstered Winchester.  The advance beckoned.

The Siege of Castle Black

Spoiler:  Rolls (click to show/hide)

With fluttering banners, screaming at the top of their lungs the Brave Elbreth Troops charge the Hill. The First wave led by the Eel, comes however udner heavy aritllery fire under the approach, losing nearly half their men before they manage to engage the Prestonians at the Gates. All that saved them where their suprisingly sturdy shields, warding off most of the grapeshot.
The following Elbreth Line Troopers are not so lucky...

The cheering of the Elbreth troops suddenly ceases as the thunderous roar of Artillery impacting into their lines silences them quickly, turning the disciplined ranks into the result of a meatgrinder. From the Elbrethian Lines our heroes can watch as their queen falls with her men, her royal blood not saving her from the scientific advances of the time, which usually dictate that leaders shouldn't be the first to charge fortified positions. Wounded, screaming Troops retreat in panic, a few men with the presence of mind taking the unconscious body of the queen with them back to their lines. Ragged cheers rise from the Prestonian Artillerists once more but at least they seem to have the deceny not to shoot fleeing enemies in the back.

Below the gates the Eels men find themselves left alone fighting on with the grim determination of Weylanders, before finally forcing the panicked Free Police to retreat, before they themselves turn back to return to the Elbreth lines refusing to charge into an unknown mass of enemies without support.

Queen Erika has been severly wounded, she won't survive this battle without medical attention. Her wounds are grievous and she might lose her left leg.
An entire Regiment of Elbreth Line Infantry has been annihilated.

“If the Elbrethians have won, we'll work with them-- if they lost, we'll offer our services to The Commander of Castle Black until I can pay the men. Then we'll go from there. Simple.” Jonathan's captains followed behind on horseback, lounging in the saddle as the group moved along. One grunted. The other remained silent.
Their beady little eyes bored into his back, but he said nothing and gave them not a glance. They crested the hill--
“Have mercy.” One of his captain gasped. The gory remnants of a charge still marked the battlefield before the wall. A smell of gunpowder, blood and organs hung heavy in the air, following the breeze.
“Elbreth still holds the siege-- I doubt we'd be able to sneak in.” Grimly, Jonathan continued toward the camp, “Lets hope our Queenie doesn't decide to use us as fodder for her grinder.”
   “And if she does?”
Jonathan remained silent, reining his horse to a stop.
“Fetch the soldiers.” His order was brisk as he galloped off.

Jonathan joins the battle and calls his men to fight. He attempts to rally the troops and spur them on to capture/destroy the artillery.

The artillery were up in smokes and the Princess had been wounded...just as he had always feared. Not good.

Attacking a fortification with no artillery left very few options. Either assault it and lose a lot of men or retreat. The latter was no option at; victory meant a chance of survival while losing would mean the end of the revolution. No...Ambros would have to allow quite a few men to die today. It was unfortunate but he could not postulate a way of leaving the Castle and marching for Sheepstead that ensure they would not be flanked or face a more prepared force later on.

With grim determination, he wrote up a new battle plan.

3 Raiders led by the Eel is to assault the gate once more. 2 Medieval and 1 Line Infantry are to reinforce their flanks as well as provide gunfire. Should they reach the gate, the Raiders are to be the first through.

Once the enemy artillery has been waisted on the initial force, 2 Line, 1 Medieval are to reinforce the vanguard.

The battle turned from victorious stroll to a disaster in time it took for castle artilerry to fire. Flavia winced and covered her face with her arm as the explosions happened, and after a moment of shock, ran for the queen's position.

"Erika!" Flavia was shaking, but she seemed to be in control of her actions, looking over the young woman's body. General threw her glance about the adjutants and soldiers who started coming to their senses after the loss of their artillery.

"Don't just stand there, help me!" Flavia shouted. Get me the stretcher!" She would have lead the retreat by now, it was foolish ot persist in the assault in her mind. But right now, she didn't give a damn, Hoffenburg could lead for all Flavia cared. She cared for nothing more than to save the first and last hope of Elbreth.

Erika is carried off by Flavia. She might survive, although she needs good medical attention.

Meanwhile, in Sheepstead...

The capital of Elbreth, once a feudal town like any other, nowadays a sprawling mass of chimney stacks and warehouses. Where once stood weaver huts, now steam-powered looms spun cloth for the merchants of Preston. Once proud old town was now a soot-stained, gray city - with its ancient townhouses, worn out cobbles and new brick of the masters. The royal castle, unchanged for years was now a military citadel of the garrison, with the new lords of the city residing in the vulgar Factor's Hall, which stood in the middle of the old city square.

Yet, in this cauldron, excitement was high. The song of freedom reached even here, and could not be unheard by the masses of Elbrethians and the resident Prestonians. While the former were abuzz with the news, talking about it in taverns and coffee houses, the latter readied arms, folded their stores and counted their money. Pamphlets were given out and strewn on the streets and the preachers could be heard everyone. for some it was an hour of liberation, for some just hyped up rumors and for ywt another group, another war and end of all things.

All that was needed was the right person and enough pressure to set things in motion. Or an army knocking on the doors of the city, which long ago overgrew the city walls beyond their capacity. Yet, not everyone who would be destined to change things wore a uniform or carried a musket...

Adrian Arialdi arrives in Sheepstead. He is carried into the city by his own, furtive needs...

"Y-your Majesty!" the Abbess managed to whisper in shock as her liege fell. She shook her head and snapped out orders.
"Sisters! Attend to the Queen! Permit her not to die, under the eyes of God!"

Sister Hospitallers take over the Princess's medical care - she is attended to by the best medical sisters in the Sisterhood. The other sisters attend to the wounded artillerymen.

Adrian looked into the partially industrialised capital of the province of Elbreth from inside the coach he travelled into the city on, the glorious mass of smokestacks spewing out it's signal of progress. Erstwhile his goal here was merely self-interest, primarily intending to visit the commodities market in order to stock up on materials for his next project, followed with a visit to the factor's hall to inquire about insuring his estate given the risk the rebels posed to it.

All in all, a rather routine visit, but life always had a way of interfering with routine.

Head down to the local commodities exchange.

Head down to the local commodities exchange.

Ah, the markets of Elbreth - Having come a long way from the feudal beginnings as an outpost of the merchant princes of the Coast, it now boasted a wide variety of consumption and construction goods, from all corners of the world, all thanks to the merchant princes and masters of Preston. Looms of Sheepstead powered the economy and managed to brig in wealth, which (while inequally distributed) still made it a rich and inviting place.

In the Commons Market, as the larger of the two market halls was called, anything  you dreamed was on sale - under the iron latticework of a roof, stalls with cloth, food, animals, clocks, watches, spices... the sheer variety could make one's head spin, and it nearly does with yours, as you squeeze through the crowd. The slightly smaller hall of the King's Market held all of the important business, with the major banking and insurance buildings framing it from two sides as it connected with the Commons from the third side.  There, you find all of the more precious commodities and the upper class goods - wine, whisky, brandy, tobacco, coffee, silks and and leather, but also weapons, tailors, jewelery and gold.

At the end of the King's Market, quite close to one of the main Preston banks, a trading chamber operated, where commodities were exchanged and sold between clerks and businessmen. This was no mere corn exchange, but a major center of finance, where fortunes were made by use of small slips of paper, which promised that the bearer was an owner of a stock of goods that was yet to be produced - this was the future, as many of the gentlemen in suits and top hats agreed between each other as they engaged in the trade of commodities.
Adrian, wasting no time, you head for the commerce chamber. you enter the large room, filled with a sea of black suits and clouds of tobacco smoke hanging overheead, interlaced with shouts of sellers and buyers and a forest of raised hands that waived their slips of paper. Navigating the crowd, you quickly locate a free clerk at one of the desks in the exchange, to your surprise. The bespectacled man with a quill in his hand gave you a polite nod

"How can I help you today, sir?"

Once more unto the Breach...

Spoiler:  Rolls (click to show/hide)

COME ON YOU COWARDS! ONCE MORE UNTO THE BREACH! ONCE MORE OR ILL STOP UP THE WALL WITH THE DEAD! screaming at the top of their lungs the Weylanders charge once more, expertly deflecting the enemy canister shot with their heavy shields, once upon the prestonian mercenaries a brutal and bloody melee begins, while behind them elbrethian reinforcements come up the hill, not so well equipped and far slower in their heavy plate armour the pikemen get cut down by the canister shots while the rest only add to the press at the gates.

Finally after some gruelling fighting the Eel and his men break through the enemy lines into the castle proper, the ragged defenders draw up for one last ditch attempt at defending, but then decide to capitulate to the Elbrethians and the Weylanders, seeing as the losses would lead to nothing more than anger their enemies.
