It feels good to add the last goblin to the pile.  Or at least the last bit of goblin.  What doesn't feel so good is the fact that we didn't actually have enough coffins for the number of dwarves who died.
Without my mace I could only slowly dismantle one goblin at a time while the rest ignored me, and chew through the (I now discovered) aptly named "goblin chow" and struck down some dwarves at random who were attending the OTHER pile of corpses made by the previous attack.
In the aftermath of that battle, I found my mace in a wooden bin mere steps from where I fought.  At that moment I resolved to never let it leave my side.

I started giving orders, it seems to be something I do.  First thing we did is significantly expand the graveyard

then we set about building proper bedrooms, a less cramped (and bee infested) dining room,  various stockpiles and workshops and some slabs to commemorate the more restless dead.

A glazer felt inspired by something or other and created a most ceremonial looking axe

Much time passed with this trivial work, and I hardly felt like a soldier.  I felt like a leader, someone who was in charge, who could improve things around here.
I felt like an overseer.
and then I heard a familiar shout

mace in my hand, dogs at my heels, drink at my beard.  all that's missing is death

I think i assigned the artifact axe to the captain of the guard or something, I don't know how good it might actually be.

My turn at last? How exciting!

I've had a very brief look at the fortress, and managed to fix the tileset issue. Expect the first update within a day or two.

Also, as it's been a very, very long time since I last posted on a forum like this, let me just check that I can upload images without trouble:

I really like this idea, sounds like a dwarfy good time, I'm gonna go ahead and skip the spoilers and ask to be put on the list, I think it will be monumentally amusing to see what the hell this place looks like after a dozen or so overseers.

Also if someone wants to dorf me that would be awesome.

Argh! What happened? Where am I? Why... can't I remember anything?

Um, let's see, I'm in a dwarven fortress... I'm wearing a sash that says...

"Overseer"?!

I asked a passing dwarf about the fortress. Apparently I'm now overseer of the dwarven town of Surprisepalace the Mirthful Gift of Chaos. I'm told the amnesia comes with the position.



Golly gosh, look at all that wealth! I can see that this is a thriving bastion of dwarven values, with few to no problems. Let's take a look around!



Hmm, there seems to be more mangled corpses than I was expecting lying around in the entrance hall...



...And outside, and in the corridors, and the mines and... well, there's just a lot of mangled corpses generally. But they've all been skeletonised, so I suppose nothing's died here recently, right?



Never mind. Oh! But what's that I spy by the magma forges - is it a pile of masterwork steel armour and weaponry, prepared for our legendary warriors? Or perhaps some astronomically valuable golden crafts to showcase our incredible craftsdwarfship?



No, it's just the body of some forgotten horror from far beneath the earth, still contorted from its death throes. On top of the forge, of course.

I was busy assigning jobs and such to dwarves, when I noticed we're under seige b-- Dear god! We're outnumbered 2000 to one!



Whoops, wrong one. We're under seige by a small squad of goblins.



I ordered the military to go deal with them, and they bravely set off... mostly in completely the opposite direction, to go "pickup equipment" or whatever they call cowardice these days. One goblin got caught in a cage, while another began harassing the poor fisherdwarves. The only military dwarf nearby - a completely untrained, unarmoured marksdwarf - arrived and had a thrilling duel with the leading goblin.



Finally, a hammerdwarf arrived, wearing nothing but a pair of iron gauntlets. No weapon, no armour, not even a pair of trousers - just gauntlets. He fought bravely, but didn't last long.



Splat! The marksdwarf soon followed suit. Thankfully, the goblins were so dumbfounded at the miracle of dwarven architecture that is our entrance that they didn't even try to enter.

A certain former overseer by the name of "Dukegod" arrived, wielding a beautiful artifact iron sword, and began pruning the nearest goblin of its limbs.



Would you believe that was her first kill? I know!

The rest of the goblins seemed content to stand around in the distance and practice their treeclimbing skills, so I decided to turn my attention to other matters.

This fortress has some very... interesting architecture. A few highlights:



A room consisting entirely of ballista arrows, a few odd bits of furniture and six fields, all of them fallow. For some reason, it has a broad hallway leading to it and is defended by a cage trap.



"Echidna ibex throne stockpile sceptre shallow water"? What's that supposed to mean?



What... is this room? Why is it here?



At the bottom of the limonite mine, a broad, spacious corridor leading absolutely nowhere. Contains soap making apparatus and a pile of teeth. Naturally.



A nice little set of apartments and a dining room, right at the bottom of the fortress, about as far as you can get from anything. (Also, note the dead fire imp on top of a stockpile full of lignite...)



Just below, a room containing four dead trolls, one caged troll and an unmarked lever.

But that's okay! A little unusual architecture never hurt anyone. You know what? Everything's going to be fine. I can just feel it.

Well, that was a rather eventful first update!

Also if someone wants to dorf me that would be awesome.

You have been dwarfed as the Captain of the Guard. Also, unless anyone has any objections, I'll redwarf every dead named dwarf as "Such-and-Such II".

Yep, I was going to include a minecart delivery system delivering supplies and taking away finished goods, then sequestering the metalsmithing staff down there, but got distracted by the GLORY OF SIEGE ENGINES!!

There's no peace to be had in Surprisepalace - if it isn't the goblins, it's the werelizards.

I again sent the military out to face the threat. I didn't exactly have the highest of expectations after last time, but there weren't many alternatives available. I was pleasantly surprised to find former overseer and macelord Neblime arrive amidst a swarm of war dogs, and - is that a grizzly bear? Anyway, she seemed quite happy to reduce the slathering beast to a pulp.

The many war dogs worked remarkably well as a meat shield, allowing her to get in many hits without receiving too much attention in return. The werelizard, however, seemed to simply shrug off its injuries.



Neblime continued smashing away with her steel mace, shattering bones and mangling limbs with reckless abandon.



You can tell Enthep Imbobaze never wished for this. It's not his fault he was cursed by the gods. All he hoped for was to make it through the full moon, until the bloodlust again left his veins, and he could resume his wanderings, searching for a cure to his condition. But it was too late. He knew now that this dwarf and her bloodthirsty pack of dogs were going to kill him, and there was nothing he could do.



Unable to stand on his mangled feet, he fell to the ground, still biting and clawing for all he was worth, but to no avail. A single tear rolled down his charcoal, scaly face as he thought of the family he would never see again. And then he died.

The aftermath of the battle: one civilian dwarf was bitten, though it doesn't seem to have broken the skin. He's been put in isolation for now. If he can make it to Summer without transforming then he's clean.

Besides Neblime, only one other dwarf was involved in the battle:



Who would have thought the old dwarf to have had so much vomit in him?

Neblime lost two dogs, leaving a mere eight dogs and one grizzly bear left.



Many of the other dogs are injured and limping around pathetically, the poor things. The grizzly bear didn't even touch the werelizard, by the way.

Now that that's out of the way, I think it's time for some spring cleaning! All those mangled corpses lying around are most unsightly. Now, unless there's any urgent announcements t--

Dammit, not the goblins again! If it isn't the werelizards, it's the goblins.

I ordered the long-suffering military out again. A hammerdwarf arrived wearing, amongst other things, three socks, two pairs of trousers, four dresses, four cloaks and four hoods. Is this all part of some sort of bizarre hammerdwarf initiation ritual or something? At least he remembered to bring a shield and warhammer this time. Neblime lost one more dog; otherwise, the battle was a resounding success.

That possessed gemsetter made a lovely little figurine. I'm sure it'll brighten whatever mantlepiece it ends up adorning.



At last, I began the long overdue mass corpse disposal. Some of the dwarves in particular were in dire need of it.



One of the more useful features of the fortress is a thin vertical shaft running all the way from the living quarters down to the forges. Some amateur archaeology, inspecting the pile at the bottom, suggests that it was originally used to transport sand from the surface to the magma glass furnace, then to dispose of dead invaders, then to dispose of table scraps. Then, judging by the number of items of clothing down there, at some point half the dwarves must've stripped naked and thrown all their clothes down the shaft. Seriously, why does nobody here seem to understand how clothes work?

Anyway, I deepened the shaft down to the magma sea, so anything dumped down the shaft is destroyed forever. How satisfying!

While gathering corpses to be dumped, I came across a few interesting things, like another dead forgotten beast just lying in the corridor of the living floors. It was quite some way from the caverns, as well - that must've been quite the thrilling battle! I also found this:

Summer brought some interesting news:



I couldn't find his corpse anywhere, either. How mysterious.

A few goblins were still standing around picking their noses in the far corner of the map, so I sent them a little surprise.



With the seige broken, we'll hopefully receive some migrants, and might even have a visit from the human caravan before long.

In other, less exciting news, I sorted out the military equipment (just about) and drafted a few more hapless dwarves in. A month passed without the bitten dwarf transforming, so he was released.



And somewhere, far beneath the bustle of the fortress, beneath the labyrinthine caverns, beneath even the deepest forges, at the depths where the rock itself begins to glow, a certain "surprise" begins to take form...
