I'm not sure how common smear campaigns were in the past.

Pretty common:

The extreme polarization of american government is new.  It didn't used to be that it was two sides in a tug of war with each other.  The left the campaigns to get more creative in labeling the opposition then calling them a tax and spend liberal or a woman hating racist.

Well, he could bank on rolling a two, but picking someone would be much simpler

Right, but I need to know which candidate to screw the margin for. Rolling a 1 and voting Dewey is the same as rolling a 4 and voting Truman, for example.

I VOTE FOR THE TOTALLY-NOT-ALIEN-SCYTHER/ABRADOLF LINCLER TICKET.

IF THAT'S NOT AVAILABLE, THAN GO WITH THRUMAN/DWEY  TICKET.

Uh...that's not really how it works...

Vote for either Truman, Dewey or Thurmond; if you vote Thurmond make a second choice in case you draw a state where he wasn't on the ballot.

Sadly I just realized there is no way Thurmond could win, even if we all voted for him and got 6's...

No. But what could happen, and what almost did happen, is for Thurmond to take enough Southern states that nobody gets an Electoral College majority, throwing the election to Congress, which was Republican-dominated, and electing Dewey.

Hey wait, what about voting progressive? Didn't they get a similar voting percentage to Thurmond?
