My mummy has died.
Tried to stairdance V:5, and it was going so well . . . used tornado to kill all the Vault guards, then retreated upstairs when baddies got too close to let the zombies I had parked on V:4 kill them. Did this a couple times, then when I went down for the third time BAM in one turn I go to 13 hp from full health. A stone giant and two ettins are adjacent to the stairs. I managed to randomly blink away, so that only one ettin was next to me, then cast tornado again and desperately spam my healing wand, but it was too little too late. I killed one of the ettins but the second one stayed alive long enough to hit me a few more times, and game over.
What I should have done was raise all the dead guards as zombies; that would have been more than enough to deal with a couple of ettins. But to do that would mean I couldn't use tornado anymore, and it taken me the whole game to learn it . . . Very stupid death, that I completely deserved, but at least I learned a few things.
1.) Everyone needs zombies. If your god permits it, learn animate dead on literally every character. Especially with Kiku, whose corpse delivery ability can save you from 90% of the game's baddies in two turns.
2.) Nobody needs high level spells. I killed easily 90% of my enemies with either airstrike (level 4) or bolt of draining (level 5). Both of those spells worked through my zombies, so I was almost never in danger as long as I was content to hide behind my undead allies. I spent a lot of xp on tornado, and sacrificed a lot of strong armor and shield possibilities because I wanted to get it castable, and it killed me after two casts because using it precluded any zombies.
On a related note, 3 of the 4 spells in the Necronomicon are off-limits to Mummies; what's up with that?
Anyway, there's still half a week of tournament left, let's see what I can accomplish.
