Rampartstern: Underwater Fortress
or
The land? But that's where ELVES live!

I'm in the process of building a fort under a temperate ocean
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
, where I can build during winter. The aquifer has proven troublesome but I currently have a self-sustaining underground area.

Once I have acess to rock and have built a tower to the water's surface, I will update.

Also, if you ever figure out why poets/bards/dancers just randomly start butchering people/getting butchered, please don't fix it, I love never knowing when a dance party will turn into a slaughter.

You don't need too many doors; only to block the outside off. Also, doors stop the drainage of water upon unretire/reclaim (which happens a *lot*)

Does the embarking over water allowing trader contact mechanic still apply to 40.xx ?

Well I've got a tower to the surface, but all the ocean keeps draining away and getting refilled, which does awful things to FPS. (could be aquifer related)

If I figure out MKV25, I will do that. EDIT: Got it working: http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-12427-rampartstern

If you don't mind me asking, how did you manage to embark in an ocean?  Did you use DFhack embark anywhere?

How do your dwarves survive? Don't the drown?
Are you really embarking ON the ocean or on the beach?

I believe he embarked on a frozen ocean, and dug down through the ice, established a... hahaha. A beachhead, as it were, (pun intentional) then when the ocean unfroze for the other three months of the year, he just lived in the stone bit of the fort until the ice came back. Clever.

It is late winter and you have arrived at your destination. Cue the movie classic submarine klaxons and the dwarven expedition leader shouting "Dive! Dive!" as the dwarves grab picks and start digging downward. Because these are dwarven submariners and they will build their submarine from stone.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.
