One of my friendly NPC was appointed as the camp manager (and will do nothing anymore, so make sure you don't assign the most skilled NPC to that role) and sending some of my other friendly NPC to gather mission only for them to return with ridiculous low amount of material every time.
So i decided to gather stuff myself too instead of exploring along the other NPC i got, and thanks to that (and a super useful cart took from a supermarket considering how much 2x4 you must fetch), i managed to upgrade a few times.
That added several crates and a couple of beds to the tents.
And atfer some successful upgrade, i could even use the newly opened "expansion" choice.
That i decided to turn into a farm, because the "money" you pay your NPC in the camp for them to work without rebelling/depressing apparently is food/calories (even if you have the "no NPC needs" mod enabled) , so why not put them to work for themselves instead of only me doing all the tedious berry and fruit gathering in the wilderness ( because my own berry farm is taking awfully long to produce result) from nearby forest
It's probably why it's highly recommended to make a faction camp near forest so you can have more chance to find food (berry, fruit on trees too etc...) and regularly use the camp manager "distribute food" option regularly.
By the way if it can help the food in order to be "distributed" needs to be placed behind the NPC camp manager, between him and the wall of the tent, basically at the opposite of the entrance of the tent, in my screenshot, in an upgrade they build a big container there.
Apparently the farm expansion is for now only a "survey" of the terrain i choose (there are now 4 pits they dug themselves) , i guess i will need the next upgrade to have the possibility to order them to work on it, but i'm now running into a problem, it require either another tent , or 4 damaged tents or several "shelter kits" to upgrade this time
Considering the tent i found in order to launch the faction camp is so rare that it's the only one i found in 3 worlds i have been playing ! i guess the other option is the shelter kit (as you can't craft a tent) .
And another problem, amongst the other required material that i have, it needs several tanned hide.
Leading to another problem, i have no seen any animals out of a cat and a fox in that world since i'm roaming around 2 cities, very odd, no moose, no bear etc...
Oh, i'm wrong i found 3 sewer rats in a basement.
Note : once you have upgraded to have some crate around the tent, you can assign an NPC to "menial work", basically gathering all the things around your tent and putting them into those crates , that's nice and what goes where is customisable through the NPC camp manager.
But the other problem is that it will also put all the required for upgrades material in the crates. The camp manager needs to see all those materials (i put them just outside the tent door usually) to have them count for your upgrading process.
And if they're in crates, the camp manager does not see them and think they're not here, so you have to move them out again with the advanced inventory management ( key / by default)
