Yeah, it's not even consistent in-universe. As one of the soulless, I think for one it's something that can be easily detected by a person's eyes and posture. From the look on people after they undergo Abstractions, they also tend to lose a bit of their ambitions and force of will.

For some reasons if your body dies in Fallen London without a soul, you still go through the Stolen River, so it either means your soul is a separate entity from your life force, or Failbetter is just lazy.

I think it depends on how willful the person is. I mean, every PC in the universe is basically a certified badass.

Arguably it's because they're likely Judgment-eggs, but then the devils dispose of the PCs' souls like they're fairly cheap trash so it may be that there's something about Judgments that make their innate qualities stick to their vessels rather than their souls.

But I mean, it's not exactly verifiable because the demons don't seem to be able to get remotely near any Judgments, let alone take their soul.

And on the topic of Judgments, I wonder if I should have the God(s) be somewhat involved in this campaign.

Yeah, I originally even planned for there to be several loose teams for the players to switch around with parallel plots. Plus if you can't post I can still act as proxy for you on Steam.

And the Gods of the Neath are pretty much meant to be relatively unknown. Just listen to the zailors if you like having a head.
