Lava makes dwarves stupid?
« on: August 27, 2006, 11:12:00 am »

I started over with a new fortress recently in order to try out a design with the center placed farther into the mountain, around the chasm. Lately I've noticed that the dwarves seem to be taking longer than normal to figure out what to do, spending fifteen seconds or so idle between jobs when there are 3 jobs they can do within a few spaces of them. I've noticed dwarves thinking slower in the late game before, but I just figured that was a matter of size and complexity and number of dwarves. I've basically got one straight tunnel all the way to the lava and maybe 6 side rooms in all, and it's taking forever for them to figure out where they can do jobs at. Does having a really long tunnel bog down the pathfinding or something?

OK, I've just noticed part of the reason dwarves are spending so much time idle. I'm trying to relocate a food stockpile deeper in, and it's adding food haul jobs veeeeeeerrrrryy slowly. I have 5 of 8 dwarves on food hauling, a few of them set exclusively to hauling, and some of them are standing around idle because it won't add any food hauling jobs to the task list. I still have a bunch of barrels sitting around outside waiting to be moved, though.

instead of using the "take item from stockpile" simply remove (part of) the stockpile in question, thus alot of items get dumped into the job list.

That's what I always do, and it (wasn't) working. Once some immigrants showed up it finally dumped all the haul jobs into the list like it was supposed to.
