Marching Armies?
« on: March 03, 2015, 09:26:19 pm »

Ok so apparently a army is on the march to this little town, but when i finnaly got there i didnt see any army... infact I didnt see anything, so I started looking around and found nothing, at night white markers skitter around the map and some of them are goblins in tents, but i doubt this is the army they were talking about, plus it doesnt even appear at day...

Is it possible for these armies to ever assult the town?

Hey you again.
Yeah I have the same issue, look around the town just to find an asterisk. Ive found tents and squads full of recruits of all races, often hostile, but sometimes not. They could be the army on 'march' I don't think they ransack towns, never seen it happen.
I think all that kind of nonsense happens in worldgen/when you arnt around.
Id say it possible for it to happen. I never hang around to stay.

Edit: found an army in a town but not attacking atm!

As for if I've found them ransacking a town?

Well, yes, but I have the most luck encountering necromancers doing this... for certain values of luck.

In areas with goblin forts close enough that they can reach it without sleeping I bump into these sometimes when armies are moving around:

Oh, here we go, this was me leading a group away and dropping them off at a nearby fort before checking for stragglers, and she (my actual wife, went back and found her, geared her up, and edited her name to fit mine) brings this up:

"Uh yeah, you were there, we just did this... what the hell, hun?"

When you encounter a person saying "the army of soandso is marching here!" you get the option to ask them to join you and be rescued, just like kids from a gobbie fort. Unfortunately nobody in the group I just rescued knew where to go so I dropped them off at the next fort over.

Said refugees at the safe fort:

What they fled from:

I think we broke that army though, they just sleep and don't even move around, where before when I was grabbing the refugees they were moving around the map when I went into travel mode.

Still, job well done, what do you think Romlam?

Dammit woman, this is no time for jokes!

...but no, I haven't heard that one.

I find it amazing that dwarf fortress can simulate this, and that the player can influence it like this, (saving people by leading them to safety rather than just killing the encroaching army). Its a shame that your actions won't be recorded in legends mode. That's the sort of thing that groups of people remember.

Also, do married adventures eventually have babies like regular npcs? Starting your own bloodline sounds really cool, assuming your kids/grandkids aren't killed or kidnapped before they grow up.

Wow!? Can your adventurer even get married?

Had a lot of the screenshots ready and was actually in the middle of the rescue so it was just a matter of grabbing a couple more reference shots. For what it is worth I found a town which was due to be attacked, and it does show up in legends when you do this.

Ended up with 41 people joining me, a sample:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then my wife reanimated a wolf corpse and it attacked someone, due to the weirdness of the sides involved one of them ended up swinging at her, and long story short, almost all of them ended up dead:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Yeah, smart move, hey, let's take a swing at the legendary+ everything dorfgirl in full artifact candy armor while her legendary+ everything husband in full artifact candy armor is standing there, and both of them were trying to save your group from an army.

I mean yeah, she did kinda make a wolf head come back to life and try to bite you, and if I knew how I would love to be able to stop her from reanimating everything around us, but the smart move when you don't have hundreds of people on your side is to run from the two candyclad murderbeards.

So I guess the moral of the story here is: don't marry a necromancer.

When you retire them and leave them alone for a bit they might be married when you unretire them. Its happened to a few of my adventures and I kinda feel bad separating them from their new family.

As Max™ very interesting post is showing, when something works in DF it's allowing for great stories.
But unfortunately when it's broken, it's really annoying.

I wish i could find marching armies / marching refugees that are not in the "eternal sleep" bug in my worlds, i know that "that is not dead which can eternal lie" but it's frankly frustrating when you have right in your game a big story potential ongoing, but that is then completely ruined by that old but still present bug.

I was playing last night and encountered a spearwoman that outclassed my girl in everyway! so i snuck up behind her and grabbed her spear, pulling it away i threw it into a tree and was all smug about how i nutured this threat... just than she jumped on me and started clawing my face up and punching me, beat my face into a bloody pulp and i couldnt touch her! my eye was all ripped up, she tore my ear off, knocked all my teeth out and scarred my cheeks... but her fists of fury came with a price, before she could finish me she got winded, i took my only chance to tag her and I swung! my blade juuuuust happened to hit her in the back of the neck hitting her in the spine, she just collapsed from my lucky 1 in 100 chance... but my girl had been mutilated... I threw her off a cliff and went down to pick up her skull for my collection, i was pretty mad though ^ _ ^

Yeah, the random super buffed encounters are always a surprise.

I'm wondering if I have so many roaming armies and wars because I ran my fort for a good five and a half years in game before doing the adventuring, with a total of a year+ of adventuring+setting up gear with unretired forts and such. The travel map in some parts is just asterisks flittering back and forth at times.

What sort of artstyle do you picture DF in your head? Like super realistic or more comic booky? I always find that a fun question

I like a genndy tartakovsky art style at least in my head, when I look at DF fan art its all over the map, some gritty and realistic and some fun and jovial and cartoony, its really cool hearing how people interpret the world around them when looking at the minimalistic graphics.

A bit like Tartakovsky's style, his cartoonish yet really detailed serious stuff like samurai jack and symbionic titan. Perfectly reflects the silly yet sometimes incredibly violent things we see and epic batlles we engage in.
