((Well, yes, they are, but from what scientists can tell its unlikely Archimedes would have been able to do much besides give the enemys severe sunburn. Which, in of itself, is useful for deterrent purposes))

[Well, that's just a factor of the quality of your mirrors, the precision of the parabola, the size of the reflection surface, and the amount of energy available for reflection. The Mythbusters used a bunch of halfhazardly targeted individual mirrors, seemingly not in parabolic formation. I doubt Archimedes could have managed much more than some distracting mild burns and damaged eyesight, but in the right situation, parabolic reflectors can be used to smelt iron or outdo the thermal output of a small nuclear reactor.]
