(Interesting note: according to the raws, the very common, non-giant cave spiders are 50x the size of brown recluses)
Jeepers.

I'm probably going to mention that in the future.

I find that as I work I can think and toy with my thoughts, a lot like normal really, just without the games and my books. a lot of my fantasies are the same as ever, but of course this situation inspires new ones and new twist as well. if I could keep up motivation long enough I might be able to write some good stories, something to keep us entertained at least. but I digress, as I was daydreaming I recalled a clever setup I saw on the forum somewhere.

someone wanted to catch some flying animals but they did not land often.
one of the suggestions was to build a tower with a GCS inside, that could fire webs at anything that flew past the tower, and land on cage traps as it fell.
being captured in the cage caused it to not be harmed by the fall if I remember correctly.

whenever I open the caverns my dwarfs tend to get killed, but we are smarter, more efficient with our strikes I would imagine, and if we were to all get a bit of practice with weapons we could easily build some walls and catch a few in traps.

in other news I tried my hands at weapon making, I made a few throwing daggers, don't ask me how I know there throwing daggers instead of some other kind, I don't know myself.
there not the best but they look functional. not that I know much about throwing daggers. I will try them out later. I should see about making a strap for them, so I can keep them on hand. maybe someone here knows something about sewing?

Some migrants appeared today, most of them seeming to be regular, rather dull dwarves.  Some of them, however, are other players that were caught up in The Event and pulled into other fortresses.  Apparently they were drawn here by some mysterious calling to go here, of all places.

In other news, the bedroom area is mostly smoothed, thanks to all of the new migrants.  Our carpenters and masons are hard at work making funiture for the fortress, and I heard one of the others crafted a few throwing daggers for us to use to defend ourselves.  What I fear most is the results when we open the caverns: the beasts down there are dangerous, and we could end up being wiped out.

No time to worry about that, I guess.  Our miners are gaining skill remarkably quickly, and are currently mining out a rich vein of limonite and some of the chalk that lies beneath our fortress.  Fortunately the area is well forested, so we won't be at a loss for wood to burn for charcoal.  That will have to do until we find coal, if indeed there is any here.

In yet other news, I have been put in charge of the new engravers.  I've never really been in charge of other people in my life, so this will be difficult...

I found a leather worker in the new group of migrants. His wife is both a tanner, butcher and hunter. Sounds like a good set up. I asked for him to make me a sash, holster, whatever you want to call it for my knives.

He complied.

I'm now wearing a set of 10 around my waist an-(the writeing dissolves into scribbles)

About 5 days or so for the artifact itself, then material gathering time.

(You should remember that the 'magic' artifacts will only have subtle magic rather than overt.)

(Yeah, that's a little outside of what I recall as what Tarn is planning.)
