<<IIRC, there's a few types. There's prepared spells, which is basically just a piece of paper that you can touch and instantly use the spell on it, and is obviously very limited. There's runes, which is for enchanting or very precise changes in an area, and isn't practical in battle. Then there's spoken spells, which are basically just saying certain words in a certain order. They can all do just about anything.>>

[Basically, magic in this setting isn't really limited to a set number of types or spells, it's effectively another science. You can do pretty much whatever you can imagine with it, if you know how and there's enough energy laying around. That is, however, the main limitation. Unless you build a battery or generator of some sort, all the available magic in an area comes from the Geothaumic Field, a pool which every Mage in the area has to share, and which is severely limited most of the time as a result of events to the East.]

[No, actually, if it was drawing from your own energy you'd either suddenly get hypothermia or die of not being able to run your nervous system for lack of the tiny bit of electricity we use to do that. When you try to do something, and complete the spell without having enough available energy to do it, it goes a tad rampant and causes a harmful backlash. Then the thing goes looking for spare energy to accomplish some interpretation of your original instructions. On a memorable occasion, this effect put out every fire in a ten kilometer radius and killed Patham's cell phone.]

(Edit, to clarify, there is enough energy available at a baseline to accomplish several fairly strong spells, but you guys keep trying to do really crazy stuff. Say, creating an artifact that produces health potion from nowhere, or mind-controlling an eldritch horror that's literally older than time, or conjuring half a kilo of banana out of thin air.)

You take all the energy in the area to make it, then use that same energy to make fire somewhere else. Or not. I obviously don't know what I'm talking about. Ignore my ramblings>>
