Of the two guards on the wall above the main gate, one levels a musket at you, more out of caution than threat, and the other speaks, surprisingly erudite for a dwarf.

"Yes, we do. Be warned that this fortress serves in part as a classified research center, and immigrants cannot be allowed to leave or communicate with outsiders until proven trustworthy. This applies to everyone, regardless of species."

"Do you agree to this restriction?"

{Incidentally, this is probably a good time to ask again; how far should I take technology? 'Cause, y'know, I could just go all the way and build tacnukes and automated tanks, but I doubt that'd make everyone happy.}

Heiterverzweiflung. Not a legit German word so much as something a friend and I made up in German class once. "Carefree despair". When life is so fucked that you can't stop laughing.

"That happens to work well for me." The human admitted as he took as step forward. "However I would wish to leave from time to time under-guard to perform practical experiments. Not that such a time would be nearing any time soon. I have much to develop." He continued as he examined the fire-arm.

{I personally think we should go with a step by step progression along tiers of tech. I'll be researching some tech, however mine will be Science Fantasy more than anything.}

((I don't think we should go as high as tanks, logistical reasons mostly.))

{I'm building steampunk revolver-muskets and black-power autocannon, I'm not really keeping tiers so much as what I would try to build next in this situation. Do as you will, tell me if I'm going overboard and I'll return the favor.

@Blaze; Yeah, didn't think they'd seem like a good idea. Though simple ones are basically an engine with a steel box around it and a small cannon on top, not really that hard to do.}

"Certainly. If you intend to join the research staff rather than the workforce, you may wish to speak with the Founders, they're in charge of that."

"Lance-Corporal Sarvesh will escort you to the domestic sections, choose any room marked as unoccupied."

The thick iron gate slowly opens to the hiss of steam, and a third guard steps out, beckoning you inside with the hand not carrying a unusual axe, apparently with a simple blunderbuss mounted along the back of the blade.

The defenses, extensive though they are, look unused, as if they have yet to suffer any great assault. Strange, for a dwarven borderlands mining hall.

The human nodded. "I thank you." he said as he entered through the gates, fascinated by the potential technologies he had witnessed in such a short amount of time. Following Sarvesh he could only hope the Founders would be kind to him and allow him the right to perform research.

{In all honesty I can't help but think the Dwarves would be fans of the KV-2 and its baby sized shells.}

"No real reason to thank us, it's pretty boring here."

Sarvesh leads you up a stone path past defenses of all sorts to the blocky main keep at the center, guarding the trade depot and sole entrance to the subterranean parts of the fort.

Through two more gates, down a few flights of stairs, through a convoluted series of hallways and staircases all abristle with fortification, and into the main corridor that serves as the fort's central point. As you walk along it towards a side path marked "Apartments", Sarvesh stops suddenly;

"And there're two of the Founders now, why don't you go talk to them first, you can get to the dorms from here."

An elf in training armor, a giant firefly somehow capable of standing upright, and a short-bearded dwarf in battered smith's leathers are walking the other way, speaking quietly.

The human nodded in thanks as he moved towards the Founders, not entirely sure what to make of the group before him. He moved up carefully. "I was wondering if I could speak to the Founders?" He asked carefully, not directing his question to any one of them in particular.

"I was wondering if it would be possible to become a researcher. The guards mentioned the possibility when I arrived." He explained calmly. "I have a number of research items you could look at if that would improve your opinion of my capabilities." He explained.

"What do you do? Mechanics, thaumics, structural engineering, material science, that kind of thing. I'm sort of in charge of these things, in the absence of anybody who knows more than I do. Not hard to, by the by."

"Just to be clear, me'n the elf are Founders, the firefly just showed up earlier today."

The human blinked at having been caught by the Dwarf. "For the most part my focus of studies has been structural and mechanical engineer. In particular I have worked on automation, however my attempts have only resulted in systems capable of producing mugs." He admitted.

"Where on this backwards dirtball did you study automated fabrication? ...Regardless, if you're even a little bit good, you'll help. I don't have any good architects yet, dumb as it may seem for dorfs."

The human opted to avoid mentioning where exactly he had attained his knowledge. "By and large the products I have been able to produce were nothing more than Lathes and cutters which harnessed steam as its power source." He explained. "As for architectural work I will be more than happy to provide whatever aid I can." He continued.

"Well, congratulations, you have just passed the 'knows more than me about that' threshold and are now in charge of fabrication research. Steam's hard as hell and I have yet to get it doing anything more than pistons, if you have it making rotary power I've got all kindsa uses for you."

"Why don't I show you to the workshops."

I gesture towards one of the many doors leading out of this thoroughfare.

{Basically, I'm running on the idea that I'm an Earth Human in a dorf body with enough knowledge of engineering to improvise things the dwarves just didn't think of yet, but aside from a general ability to Indy his way through just about anything from rockets to waterwheels isn't actually that good at it.}
