"Or build something into the dam to let water past when you're not using it. Hydraulic portcullis or something."

"Hm...That could work. Should be pretty easy, actually. No extra work, we just put in a door through the dam basically. Why didn't I think of that?"

Lower drawbridge onto Gwolf and Porkins, rendering the fortress significantly safer and saner.

Convince soldiers that basic combat training for the serfs is a good thing, since they won't be as easily eviscerated by hungry wildlife and/or arcane horrors.

Begin cooperative work with our resident technomage (technomancer? technoturge?) in developing a magictech-based motor. See if I can assist in power collection.

Yes, you get my cooperation.  I was intending to do power-to-mana converters, so yeah.

"Locks. Always put locks on things. Also, put in a way to seal the door shut. Problem solved, Gwolf."

"And it'd have to be a very, very strong door and door-control mechanism to begin with. Dam components get a lot of force put on em'."

"Exactly why I wasn't incredibly worried about it. If we're putting a door in the dam, it's going to be strong."

"I would say put doors on ALL of the "holes" in the dam; have several places where turbines can be installed, and have gates on the side holding back the water that can be sealed for maintenance or replacement of the turbines. There also ought to be a large flood release gate, so if the dam water level builds up too much, or we need to replace several turbines, or such, that we can relieve the pressure on the dam. As for the gates, I would have them not swing open, but rise and lower into place, so we don't have to fight the immense water pressure on them to open or close them. This plan will also allow us to start actually building the dam before we have the final electrical components.

As for materials, aluminum would be an ideal coating for corrosion resistance, but that will have to wait until we have the dam online for power. If we have some zinc, we could coat steel in it, and the zinc would be sacrificed, corroding more rapidly to prevent corrosion of the steel"

"We should be able to build it largely of stone, these dwarves are damn good at that. Probably need some reinforcement, though."

"I think you can make stainless steel with chromium, would that help?"

"Agreed, Elagn. I planned on having a few by-passes for water in the dam, and they were going to raise and lower into place like you said, but now that you mention it, I agree. Doors on all the things sounds good. That way we can swap out turbines if needed, and fix anything that decides to bend in wierd ways or something.

Stainless steel would be nice, if we can get some. If not, we can just use some of the steel we have laying around."

[Completely random, but this here is pretty much exactly what the "Rattler" submachine guns are, without the slight alteration of being even less well-manufactured, with much worse-quality steel, and having some wood furniture because it was cheaper.]
