...where was this? What work was it in? All I've heard about why he slept/died was because the universe shifted to a configuration such that it was impossible for him to live, so he slept in R'yleh until the stars were right again.

Ohh gawd! going to make me untangle the confusing mess that is all the lovecraft books huh?

It would probably be one that spoke about the Migo because to my knowledge they are the ones who did it.

Huh. I'm reading through Lovecraft's stuff right now, so I might find it, but he and his spawn only ever warred against the Elder Things far as I know.

That magic asteroid sounds like something... Derleth or some other hack might have come up with. IIRC Lovecraft only speaks of the universe shifting and Ye Olde Green taking a nap because of it. This is based on the Call of Cthulhu and At the Mountains of Madness, where such things are spoken about. Of course, your mileage may vary depending on what you accept as canon. Personally, I only accept stuff that was written by Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard and Lovecraft - or written by others while Lovecraft was still alive and overseeing the mythos.

In the Whisperer in the Dark or whatever that story was named, it is said the Mi-Go and those following the Yellow Sign (Hastur's posse) are at war. Or more like those who've seen the Yellow Sign try to find, expose and hurt Mi-Go and their servants, while the fungi boyz mainly hide. Maybe you are confusing the Mi-go animosity towards Hastur with Cthulhu?

So yeah, regarding how much "extended universe" one has read, it varies. Derlethian fiction is filled with foolish deus ex machinae and mystical protectors to shove his Christian propaganda into the mythos.

Well also the Yith, though they had a truce for the most part.

How would the Yith have a truce with anything? At the first sign of danger they timewarp away to a safer species, it's how they've survived for so long.

Considering the longevity of certain civilizations, the Yith could feasibly meet species X and get into a war with them, timewarp million years into the future and meet them again. Then, instead of warring/timewarping again, reach a truce and stay put for a while. For whatever reason they stay put for, to collect knowledge?

Because it sure sucks to have your buildings destroyed...

Also your forgetting that the Yith warred with the Flying Polyps and even constructed weaponry that was specifically made to fight them and them only (That the Migo basically have their own version of).

The Yith could have stolen the design from the Mi-Go though... they are know for zapping in time in both directions, carrying knowledge they "acquire" with them for Greater Good.

True.
I need to get reacquainted with the sci-fi side of Lovecraft, I just got enthralled with the Dreamlands after reading Quest to Unknown Kadath. It's such a cool way to incorporate a fantasy setting into an existing cosmic horror one and have it be believable!
Anyhow, I think this is a derail, since the thread is supposed to be about an Elder God game. I'll make a Lovecraft/etc thread in GD if no one objects?

I imagine it'd play like Cookie Clicker. You start out small, with tiny little pokes and prods because you're still asleep or have only just woken up. Then suddenly, when enough cosmic levers have been pulled, everything goes to shit because the conditions have been met for you to start getting some real power.

Hold up.  Looking through the Lovecraftian Circle mythos, it appears that we may be thinking of things in a slightly off direction.  Apparently the Elder Gods are benevolent.  The Outer Gods are the malevolent ones.

That's August Derleth shit.  While he has a really cool name he was also a Christian and tended to let his predilection towards Good vs. Evil narratives slip into his interpretations of Lovecraft.  I"m guessing that's also where this platinum meteor thing came from because it's certainly in no Lovecraft I've read.  Lovecraft did not associate his beings with good or evil, the elements, or anything else that means something to humans.

Benevolent and malevolent are both inadequate words because they imply Cthulhu things have a human-reckonable opinion on humans.  Their motivations are parallel to human experience and anything that seems to concern humans directly is pareidolia.

Heh, when I saw the title of your topic, the first thing that popped up in my mind was Populous and That Which Sleeps, even tho TWS is different with regard to gameplay mechanics, so I would say, Populous is the best example in the God sim category....while we are at it, I would gladly pay 50$ for a new and decent Populous clone. It's a miracle that it wasn't Kickstarted yet, well AFAIK at least.

There was Godus, a spiritual successor to Populous by Molyneux, but, uh, heheheheh...
