I never saw the Lovecraftien deities (or sufficiently advanced aliens) as actively malevolent, with the possible exception of Nyarlathotepth. Rather, they are so alien their goals, motivations and morals are unidentifiable and impossible to understand. I always thought the way to survive in the Lovecraftian cosmos was by being so insignificant as to fly under the radar, welcome a particular tentacular overlord to protect from the others or by actively playing the tentaculars against each other.

...or by actively playing the tentaculars against each other.

If you manage to make it through your whole life without them finding out, would their reaction be akin to having heavy levels of respect or raw fury?

I like to think that Nyarlothotep spent so long with humans that it became evil, instead of the other way around.

Alien beings, alien motivations. They might not even notice; it is likelier you were playing their cults and servitor drones, not the gods themselves.

Essentially yeah. The whole point of Lovecraft's thing was that humanity is so insignificant that it basically goes unnoticed in the cosmos, save of course for the pissed off trickster god/soul of Azathoth that spends his time fucking around with lesser species and individuals.
I like to think that Nyarlothotep spent so long with humans that it became evil, instead of the other way around.
Huh? Far as I can tell Nyarlathotep is the messenger of the Outer Gods, as well as the soul of Azathoth, who's rather disdainful towards his asleep self and everyone else.

Many of them are actively malevolent but earth is sort of completely unimportant to their goals.

Earth is protected in much the same way a sandbox in someone's back yard might be protected from WW2.

On another perspective, they're forces of nature. Would a hurricane be angry if you somehow steered it into another hurricane?

How the hell would you even steer a hurricane, metaphorical or otherwise?

Indeed many of the higher dieties like Yog-Slothoth are literal manifestations of the universe. (Yog being time and space itself)

There are few benevolent or helpful deities in lovecraft (not none like some would tell you).

Yeah,  there are some that aren't complete assholes and even occasionally help out people when it suits them.
Sometimes.

The same way you manipulate a hyperdimensional entity beyond your comprehension, obviously. :P

Even good old Nyarlathotepth lends a hand to a human protagonist occasionally. Of course, the help just causes more chaos and/or ends up driving the protagonist insane, but... at least no hentai ending! Regarding malevolence, yeah, I forgot that Cthulhu actively wants to stir shit up, but he is the high priest of Nyar, so I presume that is where it stems from. Besides, even Cthulhu might not be personally malevolent towards humans, just... housekeeping. "Hey, I took a nap and my freshly colonized new planet/house is overcome with some annoying vermin? Time to get some bug spray."

The issue is that Cthulhu's Meer existence is anathema to human beings. Humans pose no threat to Cthulhu.

It took a Asteroid mystically enchanted and made of platinum to put him down... and that killed the Dinosaurs. I don't think human beings can really fight back.

Nyarlathotepth also helps humans a lot because he wants insanity and pain. Having humanity die out is against his own personal wishes. He can't act directly against the Outer Gods, but he can do a few things.

---

Also I deny the old saying that you cannot have "Victories" against the Great Old Ones that you can only break even.

You can win, You can stop an old one basically forever. it is just that losing will happen eventually.

It is that in the grand scheme of things all you are doing is delaying.

Yes that is specifically what killed him.

A Asteroid made of platinum that was mystically enchanted... Basically shot right on top of his head.
