Walls and Rivers
« on: February 28, 2015, 01:03:22 pm »

If I have a 7/7 river that my dwarfs cannot cross, is there any risk of any non-flying monsters getting across it currently?

Also, should I still build a wall along the river for defenses?
Also, I've built the walls up 2 z-levels high (so ground level and +1 level up.  Is this acceptable or do I need to go higher to avoid climbing/jumping issues?

- I have a flat terrain, so a 6x6 dig down as my entrance.  I am considering walling that off as a separate "inner keep" area.

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
W               E  RR
B                  RR
W                  RR
WWWWWWWWRR

So, R is the River.
E is my entrance
W is the walls I have built.
B is my bridge to seal my keep area.  So you can see my north and east is protected only by the river currently.

No, they went to Hel, where they lead a bleak existence in cold and darkness. Valhalla is reserved for valiant warriors.

Usually, rivers prevent non swimming creatures from crossing. On occasion, you may find the water level at the downstream end where the water leaves the map gets low enough that creatures can cross there, but that is rare. Walls will also keep enemies with ranged weapons from firing across the river. Two z-levels is probably not enough unless you build an overhang on top. Make the wall out of blocks, they are harder to climb. Walling off and covering over your stairs, with raising bridges to protect the entrance, is probably a very good idea. You'll be thankful when your first flying bad guys come.

I've seen critters skip across a river before. Although I don't recall the circumstances.

There are attackers riding amphibous creatures, goblins on cave crocodiles for example.

If they get sent flying fast enough, they bounce. Usually when sadistic adventurers take running jumps into them, as far as I know, so that might not be too much of a threat.

Well, yes. All the amphibious creatures.

Crocodiles, alligators, giant toads, giant olms, hippos, etc.

And goblins ride half of them already, so yes. Though if the amphibious mount takes too much of a bath, the goblin riding it, well... he drowns.

Also walls are best crenelated. Invaders climb up walls this version, and fortifications cannot be climbed at all, so put a fortification on top.

Or just put a fortification instead of a wall, and then a 1z wall behind it to avoid stray bolts/arrows.

I've seen pangolin jump across rivers. Do goblins or any other raiders do this? Even if it's 5-wide, a running/sprinting jump would get over it.
